Immediately following A Hard Day's Night
Josiah opened the door and Vin followed him inside.
"Do you want something to eat?" Josiah asked. "I have some spaghetti. There's some lunch meat, ham I think."
Vin shook his head. "I just want to get a shower and go to bed," he said. He hesitated and then said. "If I'm payin' for the bed, best take it now. I ain't gonna be much good after the shower."
Josiah sighed. "No payment," he said. "Shower. If you want something to eat or drink, take it. You can sleep here." He pointed to the couch. "I won't bother you during the night. I won't come to you in a day or a week or a month or a year and demand repayment."
"Why?" Vin asked suspiciously.
Josiah smiled. "Karma," he said.
"What the fuck does that mean?" Vin demanded. He didn't know what game Josiah was playing, but he wasn't about to take what the other man was offering without knowing how he would be expected to repay Josiah.
"Everyone needs a hand sometimes," Josiah said. "Once upon a time, someone held a hand out to me when I needed it. I can't repay him. All I can do is offer someone else a hand from time to time. Go take your shower," he said. "I'll put something for you to sleep in outside the bathroom door."
