Good Hope Orphanage
Tenth Street. Denver CO.
Journal Entry for Sally Rice
For December 24th 2000

Boy, today was so nice here at the orphanage for a change. Today we got a visit from not only Santa, but also from Mr Josiah, Mr Vin, Mr Ezra. Mr Buck, Mr JD, Mr Nathan and Mr Chris. Mr Chris says I can just say Mr Chris and his friends when I need to talk about them. He said if every time I wanted to tell someone about them I had to remember all them names I'd likely forget what I wanted to say by the end of the list.

Anyway the Sisters had told us a week ago we'd have a party today and some special people would be stopping by to visit. I figured it was them same church people from last year so wasn't all that excited about the party. But this year was so much nicer and Mr Chris and his friends were a whole lot of fun.

My name is Sally Rice and I'm seven years old, I been here at Great Hope for 4 years now since my mom and dad were killed in a car wreak. Since I am what one lady from the church called sickly I don't suppose I'll ever be sent to a foster home like a lot of the kids are. But I don't mind, the Sisters here are nice and they take real good care of me. And Mr Josiah stops by at least once a month to check on me and read me stories so it's not so bad being stuck here all the time. The sisters told me Mr Josiah does a lot of stuff for the orphanage and the mission just down the street, Sister Maria said he's a good man with a large heart. I asked God not to let his heart burst since it's so large but sister Maria laughed and said I took that the wrong way. And when I asked Mr Josiah what she meant he said he didn't have all that large a heart and I wasn't to worry about it bursting, he laughed really loud when I told him about my prayer for him. I like Mr Josiah, he's so nice and he's big and gives the best hugs. And sometimes when I don't feel real good Mr Josiah will come visit me and hold me on his big lap and tell me stories til I fall asleep. I all ways feel warm and safe when he does that. He had told me about Mr Chris and his friends before but I never thought for a minute I'd get to meet them all..

It was so funny when Mr Buck came in dressed like Santa and he had Mr Vin and Mr JD dressed in Santa helper clothes. Mr Buck kept telling Mr Vin and Mr JD they looked real cute, and Mr Vin told Mr Buck if he didn't stop saying that he'd shoot him once this deal was over...I don't think I was suppose to hear that part. Mr Buck had all of us kids sit on his lap and tell him what we wanted for Christmas and Mr Vin and Mr JD give us bags of candy, fruit and nuts after we did that. The older kids didn't have to sit on Mr Buck's lap but they still got the bags of candy. I told Mr Buck they shouldn't get now since they were always so mean to us littler kids but he said it was Christmas time and we all had to try and forget the bad things people did to us and enjoy the holiday.

Once Mr Buck got done he stayed along with Mr Vin and Mr JD to watch Mr Ezra do card tricks and a magic show, Mr Nathan helped his with that, Mr Ezra said Mr Nathan was the best assistant he ever had. And when Mr Ezra pulled flowers out of Mr Nathan's ear and give them to Sister Bernice we all thought that was funny since Sister Bernice says flowers make her sneeze. The bast part was when Mr Ezra and Mr Nathan got done with the show, cause then they both come down and showed us how to do some of the tricks with the cards and stuff.

Then Mr Josiah and Mr Chris came in with a big supper for us. We had pizza, chips and soda, sister Maria said after all that food we'd never want to go to bed and sleep. But Mr Chris said him and his friends would tire us all out before bed time. After supper Santa came in and brought us all gifts and stuff. We all got a lot of toys and clothes, not like last year when all we got was one toy and some candy canes from the church people. Mr Chris and his friends helps us figure out how some of the toys worked and set up the big TV in the play room for all of us to watch when we were allow too. Then they all played with the younger kids and Mr Ezra with Mr Nathan lead us in singing Christmas songs.

Mr Buck sung loud and had all us kids laughing but Mr Ezra didn't like Mr Buck singing so asked him to stop. When it got dark Mr JD asked Mr Nathan if he would sing a couple of songs for us before they had to leave. So Mr Ezra played the piano while Mr Nathan sang a real pretty song he called "Oh Holy Night". It was really pretty his singing and when Me Ezra joined it it was like one of those shows you'd see on TV.

Sister Bernice finally told us it was time for Mr Chris and his friends to leave so us little ones could go to bed, none of us wanted them to leave but Mr Josiah said he'd read "The Night Before Christmas " for us before he left. So all of us got into our new PJ's and let the sisters tuck us into bed while Mr Chris and his friends cleaned up the play room. I figured Mr Chris and the others would leave before Mr Josiah read the story but they all came back into the room and found a bed to sit on while Mr Josiah read.

The Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas
and all thru the house,
not a creature was stirring,
not even a mouse.
All the stockings were hung
by the chimney with care
In the hope that St. Nicholas
soon would be there.

Then what to my
wondering eyes should appear,
A miniature sleigh
and eight tiny reindeer.
A little old driver
so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment
it must be St. Nick.

And more rapid than eagles
his reindeer all came
As he shouted, "On Dasher"
and each reindeer's name.
And so up to the housetop
the reindeer soon flew,
with the sleigh full of toys
and St. Nicholas too.

Down the chimney he came
with a leap and a bound
He was dressed all in fur
and his belly was round
He spoke not a word
but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings
then turned with a jerk.

And laying his finger
aside of his nose,
then giving a nod
up the chimney he rose
But I heard him exclaim
as he drove out of sight
"Merry Christmas to all
and to all a Good Night".

Once the story was done Mr Chris and his friends left the orphanage and we all were left to hope they would come to visit again sometime soon.
