Do You Hear What I Hear

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite
He opened his eyes, blinking at first to clear their sight. When finally they focused he frowned trying to figure out why everything looked upside down. Turning his head slowly the next sight had everything rushing back, the headlights coming right at them, Chris yelling to hang on as they veered to miss the car and slide off the road rolling over as they went down the raven. Coming to and abrupt stop on the cab of Larbee´s truck, he remembered it all as his eyes saw Chris suspended upside down, the seat belt holding him in place against the wheel.
Getting himself unbuckled, he couldn´t stop the gasp of pain that filled him as he held himself up as he got his legs under him. Vin carefully maneuvered himself half under and half beside his friend. Knowing this was going to hurt, Vin prepared himself the best he could as he braced his shoulder and left arm under and around Chris and with his right hit the button to release the seat belt. Though he did slow Chris´s decent, Vin couldn´t stop it and both fell to the roof of the cab. His last conscious sight was of a star shining so bright, that he turned his head and saw his friend´s silent face.
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
do you hear what I hear
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
Vin had left Chris what seemed like hours, but knew it had only really been twenty to thirty minutes. When he had come to again, Vin had instantly check Chris´s pulse. He had found a strong beat, but fear still gripped him as he realized his friend had never woken up nor moved at all. Finding no single with his cell phone, Vin knew he had to go get help, be it to find a way back up to the road to get a signal or find someone. He had covered Chris with everything he could find, including his own coat to help starve off shock, then had made his way out of his shattered window.
Vin had tried at first to climb up the side of the raven but with the snow and steep incline he found quickly it was wasting time. So here he was, his arms tightly wrapped around himself pushing on through the snow following the ravens bottom. For a moment he thought he heard something, stopping and listening, he shook his head thinking the cold and the pain must be getting to him. Pushing on his head tucked down trying to keep as much warmth generated as he could within his Henley shirts and fleece button up, he tilted his head again when a sound on the wind caught his hearing. Hoping maybe it was really something, he saw up ahead where the raven was leveling out on the left toward the woods, so he began moving in that direction. Keeping his focus best he could on making his feet and legs keep going and listening for any pieces of the sound he heard. Following the trail he was tracking not by sight, bu t sound of song that drifted on the air.
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
do you know what I know
In your palace warm, mighty king,
do you know what I know
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Following the music as it became more clear to hear, which somewhere in his mind registered he was getting closer to it´s source. He wasn´t expecting the sight as he broke out of the trees and into the open. There on the other side of a glistening meadow of new snow, stood a Church glowing with it´s lights and music surrounding it like a heavenly beacon calling him home.
The shivers that had been his constant companion, tripled there efforts as he slowly made his way across the open area in the knee deep snow, it´s raise climbing as high to his mid thigh. Just as he finally made it across, running on pure determination to find help for his friend, all his other reserves, had long since quit running out and going numb. Stepping into the circle of golden light reflecting from the stain glass halo in the window under the steeple. Vin´s body finally betrayed him, stumbling and falling into the cold frozen powder of snow.
Inside his mind, Vin´s inner voice screamed out ‘no, can´t stop, I´m so close.´ His hand reaching out to pull himself along, but instead fell still against a step it leaned on.
Slowly a silvery light began to slide across until it laid completely upon him. Coating and bathing Vin with hope and care, that an angel made sure he was found and seen.
Said the king to the people everywhere,
listen to what I say
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
listen to what I say
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
Chris opening his eyes, frowned as he looked around, trying to figure out where he was.
"Easy stud, you´re alright. You´re in the hospital." Buck softly explained, when he saw the confused face.
"Vin?" Chris asked meeting Buck´s eyes as the memory of the wreck slammed into his mind.
"Junior is right over there, in the next bed." Buck assure, his voice filled with awe that Chris didn't miss.
"What is it Buck, is he alright?" He needed to know.
"Yea you´re both are going to be alright. You got a hell of a concussion. And Vin he has a couple of cracked ribs and 3 broken bones. It just …." Buck explained but didn't finish as he once again stared in amazement with what he had been told.
"Damn it Buck tell me what´s going on." Chris growled out of frustration and fear.
"Vin wrapped you up in the truck with all the coats and walked out to find you some help. He walked almost a mile through snow and cold wind until he came up on a church. The preacher´s seven year old daughter found him, when she slipped out side to play in the snow while the choir practice was going on. They got help out there and when you two was brought in and after the doctor had examined both of you, well the doctor said it was impossible for Vin to have walked much less that far. That the pain would have been excruciating with just even one step. The 3 broke bones, one in his left arm and two in his left ankle." Pausing for a moment as he again looked at the man that laid sleeping in the next bed. He finally continued, "The officer first on the scene at the church said when Vin came to, he refused for them to help him until they went and got you. Not the cold, the exhaustion or the pain slowed hi m Chris to make sure you got help. He makes me feel humbled at what he can endure."
"It isn´t endurance,´ said a voice from the hallway that they saw was the preacher by the way he was dressed. Smiling at the two men, the preacher went on, "There are those who´s strength in goodness and heart shines stronger and brighter than any light when it comes to the love of there brother."
The End
