Chapter 1
The traffic was light as Chris made his way into downtown Denver. His companion was silent and not in the mood for talk, which wasn't unusual. Chris glanced over at Vin and saw him starring out the window. He hoped the doctor had good news for them. Eight weeks ago Vin was admitted to the hospital for a severe case of pneumonia. There were complications and Vin had an allergic reaction to some medication. The medication caused Vin to go into seizures. As a precaution he was placed on Phenobarbital. The only problem with that were the side effects. The drugs could cause blurred vision, unsteady gate and depression. Vin of course had all of them which made carrying a gun impossible. Vin had opted to take leave than be stuck at a desk. Vin stayed with Chris at the ranch since he couldn't drive. After a few weeks at the ranch Vin's depression become troublesome and Dr. Allen put him on anti-depressants. They both endured four weeks of hell while Vin was on the drug. Their relationship became strained when the drug caused Vin to have no interest in sex. Chris tried to reassure Vin that their relationship was more than that but Vin wasn't buying it. He hadn't had any more seizures during those weeks and for the past two Dr. Allen began to wean him off the drugs. Vin wasn't happy with the slow progress and she warned him what could happen if he stopped the medication abruptly. Chris assured her Vin would follow her directions.

"Chris," Vin called.

"Yeah, Vin."

"What if..."

"Let's just wait to hear what Dr. Allen says," Chris said turning to Vin. "Alright?"

Vin nodded and Chris turned back to his driving. He pulled into the parking lot for the hospital and found a space close to the door. Vin reluctantly climbed out and waited for Chris. Vin led the way inside and Chris followed. Chris noticed that Vin's clothes were loose. The sharpshooter had lost a lot of weight while he was sick. Chris took a seat as Vin was led into one of the rooms. He came back a few minutes later with a Band-Aid over the needle mark where he gave blood. Vin sat next to Chris and leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling. Chris absently flipped through a magazine. An hour later a nurse came to them and said they could go in.

"Hello, Vin," Dr. Allen said. "How are you feeling?"

"Okay."

"Still on one word answers I see," she smiled.

"I reckon."

"Well I'll get right to the point," She said. "You're clean. There's no more phenobarb in your system."

"I can go back to work?" Vin asked eagerly.

"Hold on Vin," she said. "You know what I said."

"But I'm clean" Vin argued. "I can get my gun back."

"I need one more week," Sarah said patiently. "We need to see if you have any seizures now that the phenobarb is gone."

Vin lost his patience and stormed out of the office. Chris sat and watched him leave.

"I'm sorry, Chris," she said. "I need to make sure."

"I understand," he said. "I think Vin does too. He's just tired of being cooped up."

"Vin mentioned that you had horses," Sarah said.

"I've been afraid to let him ride," Chris admitted.

"No wonder he's grumpy," she laughed. "Take him out this weekend."

"I will," Chris said. "Thank you."

"Anytime."

Chris walked out of the office and headed for the parking lot. Vin was sitting in the passenger seat of the truck brooding. Chris shook his head and climbed into the driver's seat. He started the truck and pulled out of the parking area. Vin looked up when he noticed Chris was heading in the wrong direction of the ranch.

"Where we going?"

"Thought you might want to go to the office."

"Alright," Vin shrugged.

Chris pulled into the garage of the federal building and parked next to Buck's pick up. They got out of the truck and headed for the elevator. When the elevator opened on the main floor a few people got in and greeted Vin. Chris was glad he greeted them in a civil manner. He knew Vin had a right to be mad but his attitude was starting to get annoying. The elevator finally arrived on the eleventh floor and they headed for the bullpen. JD looked up as they walked in.

"Hey, look who's here," he exclaimed.

They all greeted Vin but knew better than to make a big deal. Vin excused himself saying he had to get something out of his locker.

"So what did Dr. Allen say?" Buck asked.

"The phenobarb is out of his system," Chris began. "Now Vin has to wait another week to see if he has any seizures now that he's off it."

"Guess Vin wasn't too happy," JD said.

"No he wasn't," Chris agreed.

"It appears Vin has lost even more weight," Ezra observed.

"About seven pounds," Chris confirmed. "Dr. Allen wasn't too happy but she wasn't surprised."

"How are you holding up?" Josiah asked.

"Don't ask," Chris said heading for his office ending the conversation.

"This isn't good," Nathan said as they watched Chris close his door.

"Ya think," Buck said sarcastically.

Josiah stood watching Chris's door as everyone else drifted back to their desks. The ex-preacher walked purposefully towards Chris’s door. When he got there he knocked once and walked in.

"What!" Chris demanded.

"Quit pussy footing around," Josiah said. "Vin's been a royal pain in the ass and you know it."

"But..."Chris tried to argue.

"No buts, Chris," Josiah said. "Granted a lot of it was the medication but now he's just feeling sorry for himself."

"He has a right too," Chris said angrily. "Life sure dealt him a shitty hand."

"Maybe, but there's no guarantees in this world," Josiah said. "And it doesn't help that you're emotionally involved. Vin knows you won't get mad and you let him get away with a lot."

"I tried talking with him," Chris admitted. "But you know how he gets."

"Yes I do."

"What are going to do?"

"Going to knock some sense into that boy," Josiah announced.

Vin wandered away from the others not really sure where he was headed. He wasn't surprised when he eventually walked down to the small gym on the sixth floor. Vin went over to the medicine bag and began to punch it. It felt good to be hitting something and Vin poured all his frustrations into his punches. Josiah watched from the doorway and he could see the anger in every blow.

"Feel better?" he asked.

"Yes!" Vin said hit the bag hard.

"Come to talk to you Vin," Josiah said. "You've been acting pretty selfish lately."

"You're fucking kidding right?" Vin asked shocked. "Think I have a right. I almost lose my God damned life because some stupid fucking intern tries a new drug. Then they put me on a drug that doesn't have me fucking thinking straight and you think I've been a little selfish!"

Vin had been emphasizing his tirade by poking Josiah in the chest. If Vin had been paying attention he would have notice Josiah looking at if as if he lost his mind. The older agent hated what he as about to do but if he didn't he was afraid Vin might fall over the deep end. Vin never expected Josiah to hit him. The bigger man landed a blow to Vin's jaw that made him stagger. Vin barely shook it off then lunged for Josiah. He got in a few good punches but was no match for Josiah as he grabbed Vin in a bear hug pinning his arms. Vin struggled in Josiah's grasp for a short while then stopped. Josiah was surprised when he felt Vin begin to laugh.

"Guess you're right, Josiah," Vin said. "I've been acting like a jerk. Have I been this way the whole time? I don't remember much."

"For the most part," Josiah said as he set Vin on his feet. "A lot of it was the medication but the past two weeks have been the worst."

"Ain't never been known for patience," Vin said working his jaw.

"No you haven't," Josiah laughed.

"But you want to know the strangest thing," Vin said. "No matter how bad I got Chris was always there."

"That's what it means to care for someone," Josiah said.

"This is new territory for me," Vin admitted.

"I think you'll be able to handle it," Josiah smiled. "You just have to be patient for one more week."

"I can't!" Vin yelled punching the bag. "I'm tired of feeling this way. I'm going crazy at the ranch. Can't drive my jeep and Chris won't let me ride the horses. If I watch Regis one more time I swear I'm gonna kill him."

"That wouldn't be a bad thing," Josiah said put his arm around Vin's shoulder. "But you can do it."

"Guess I owe everybody an apology, huh?"

"Might be a good idea," Josiah smiled.

Chris was sorting through his mail when Buck popped his head in and told him to come out to the bullpen. When he exited his office Vin was leaning on his desk with Josiah standing close by. Chris could see a bruise forming on the right side of Vin's jaw.

"Got something to say to y'all," Vin began. "I know I ain't been the best company."

"That's an understatement," Buck laughed.

"Well I just wanted to say I'm sorry," Vin smiled.

"You haven't been that bad," JD argued.

"Yeah he has," Chris laughed and Vin bit his lower lip. "But we're used to it. Was going to surprise everyone at dinner but I'll do it now. Monday's a holiday so I thought we'd take the horses up to the high country and camp for the weekend."

"You mean it!" Vin exclaimed.

"Wouldn't say it if I didn't," Chris said. "Besides Dr. Allen said I was wrong not letting you ride."

"I knew it," Vin accused.

"Okay so Chris was a little over protective," Buck laughed. "But you should expect that by now."

"This is going to be great!" JD said excitedly.

"Oh yes, just marvelous," Ezra groused. "Being in the saddle all day. Sleeping on the hard ground."

They all knew Ezra didn't mean what he said. They new he liked to ride as much as they did. Chris watched Vin as he talked excitedly with JD. Josiah caught his eye and gave him a thumbs up.

Dinner at Inez's was a loud affair as they decided what they would do on the camping trip. When closing time came around Inez's was glad to push them out the door. On the ride back to the ranch Vin talked continuously about what they would do. Chris just smiled seeing the difference in Vin. He pulled into the driveway and stopped the truck up close to the house. They got out and walked over to the door. Chris unlocked it and they went inside.

"Think I'll head to bed," Vin said with a yawn.

"Be there in a minute," Chris said. "I want to check the answering machine.

There were a few messages on the machine and Chris listened in annoyance as telemarketers tried to sell him something. One message was from the farrier saying he'd be out to the ranch on Thursday. When the messages were finished Chris walked around the house checking the windows and locking the front door. He wandered into the bedroom to find Vin already under the covers. Chris smiled as he heard the soft snores coming from under the blankets. He went into the bathroom to wash up then walked back to the bed. Chris stripped off his clothes and crawled naked into the bed. Vin stirred as Chris went to spoon next to him. The younger man rolled over and pushed Chris on his back so he could use Chris's chest as a pillow. Chris pulled Vin tight against him.

"I'm sorry, Chris," Vin said as he made lazy circles on Chris' chest.

"Not your fault."

"I know, I'm just sorry we haven't...well you know."

"I know," Chris smiled and hugged him tighter.

"I'll make it up to you," Vin said.

"Go to sleep, Vin," Chris said kissing the top of his head.

Vin snuggled closer and after a short time Chris could feel the steady breathing that signaled Vin was asleep. Chris absently ran his finger through Vin's hair. Just that simple act was making Chris's cock hard and he sighed. Chris stopped what he was doing and tried to think of other things. It had been frustrating when they learned that the combination of drugs caused Vin to not desire sex. Chris assured him their relationship was more than just the physical act. Chris sighed and tried to relax. Before he knew it he was asleep.

Chapter 2

Chris was up early the next morning packing what they needed. He decided they would take one packhorse with them to carry the tents and other equipment. He called Buck and told him to pick up some beef jerky and other food that would last the weekend, stuff that wouldn't need refrigeration. Chris went down to the barn to start getting the horses ready. As he walked inside six horses greeted him looking for food. The past few years the others started buying horses and leaving them at Chris's. The one that surprised him the most was when Ezra approached him about boarding a horse at the ranch. Chris wasn't about to say no when the others had horses at the ranch. JD was the only one that left his horse at Nettie's. He boarded Milagro over there so he could ride with Casey on the weekend. They would swing over with the trailer to pick him up and borrow a packhorse from Nettie. Chris was giving the horses grain when he heard someone enter the barn. He was surprised to see it was Buck.

"Where's your shadow?" Chris asked.

"You mean my short shadow?" Buck laughed holding his hand at chest level. "I left him over at Nettie's to get Milagro and the packhorse ready."

"I guess Casey's wants to come now."

"No she has a horse show this afternoon," Buck said. "She was disappointed. So where's Vin?"

"Still sleeping I guess."

"You're kidding," Buck said surprised.

"He still sleeps a lot."

"Think he's up to this trip?" Buck asked in concern.

"Yeah," Chris smiled. "We'll just keep and eye on him."

Buck helped Chris finish the horses then they hooked up the trailer to Chris's pick up. When they were done they went inside. They were sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee when Vin wandered in. He was dressed in faded jeans and a T-shirt. His hair was a shambles and he was bare foot. The bruise on his jaw from where Josiah punched him was a livid purple.

"Mornin'," Vin said around a yawn.

"Howdy sleepy head," Buck laughed. "How's your jaw?"

"Not bad considering," Vin answered.

"Considering what?" Buck asked.

"That he could have done a lot worse."

"True," Buck laughed.

"So, where is everybody?" Vin asked as he walked over to the fridge. He opened the door and just stared into it.

"Looking for something?" Chris asked. "Or were you trying to cool the house using the fridge?"

Vin pulled out the milk and closed the door giving Chris a dirty look. He put the milk on the counter and got a bowl out of the cabinet then went looking for cereal. Vin grabbed the box of Captain Crunch and poured some into the bowl and added milk. He was sitting at the table enjoying his breakfast when Nathan and Josiah showed up.

"How can you eat that for breakfast?" Nathan asked.

"I like um," Vin said as he spooned more into his mouth.

"Coffee," Chris offered.

They sat drinking their coffee when Ezra showed up.

"This is a deplorable time of the day," he commented.

"Coffee?" Josiah asked.

Ezra helped himself to a cup of coffee as Vin went to finish getting dressed. Vin came back a few minutes later with his hair brushed and his shirt tucked in but he was still bare foot.

"Um, Vin, did you forget something?" Buck asked pointing to his feet. Vin gave Buck a lopsided grin and disappeared.

"He's still a little fuzzy in the morning I see," Nathan said.

"A little," Chris said. "Dr. Allen said that would get better."

Vin came back carrying his boots and sat down to pull them on. He looked at Ezra and saw he was dressed in jeans and a polo shirt.

"Nice duds, Ez," Vin smiled as he pulled his pants legs over his boots.

"If Mother could see me now," Ezra commented rolling his eyes.

Finally everyone was ready and they went out to the barn. It was decided they would take Nathan's Jeep and put all the supplies and everything else inside. They loaded the horses and put the tack in the back of Chris's pick up. Chris went back in to lock up the house and they were all set. Chris pulled out of the driveway and headed for Nettie's. Nettie's ranch was twenty minutes away and the traffic was light early this morning. They pulled into her driveway and she came out to greet them.

"Mornin boys," she said as they climbed out of the trucks.

"Mornin', Nettie," Vin said.

"What happened to you?" She exclaimed when she saw the bruise on his jaw.

"Ran into something," Vin said.

"Can't leave you for a minute, why you're all skin and bones." She said taking his arm. "Come inside and have some of my biscuits."

Vin couldn't resist Nettie's biscuits and gladly followed her. JD came from around the house leading Milagro and Casey led the packhorse Pete. By the time they were loaded and JD got his saddle and the gear for the packhorse Vin came out of the house. Chris could see he was carrying a large plastic container that Nettie used to pack food. Vin kissed Nettie on the check and came over to the truck.

"What do ya got?" Buck asked.

"Lunch," Vin smiled.

They climbed in the trucks and Vin waved to Nettie as they pulled out. It was a two-hour ride to National Forest where they would leave the trailer and head for the high country. Chris had a permit to park the trailer and trucks at the forest. Vin was turned in his seat having an animated discussion with JD about a new saddle they had seen at the tack shop last week. JD asked where they were headed and Vin smiled.

"You're gonna love it!" he said excitedly. "It's got a stream and we can do some rock climbing and everything."

"I don't want you pushing yourself," Chris cautioned.

"Don't start Chris," Vin said angrily.

"Yeah, Chris, at least wait until we get going first," Buck teased to break the tension.

Chris just rolled his eyes and continued driving. The conversion had ended and Vin was sorry for his out burst. He glanced at Chris and caught his eye. Chris turned to him and could tell Vin was sorry even though he didn't say a word. Chris smiled and Vin knew he was forgiven.

"Quit that," Buck said cuffing Vin on the ear. "At least talk or something quit using those silent looks and reading each others minds."

"Your just jealous cause you and JD can't do it," Vin teased.

"I'm glad!" JD exclaimed. "Could you imagine being able to read Buck's mind? It would have an X rating."

Buck punched JD in the arm and they started to wrestle in the back seat. Chris scolded them and they stopped but not before JD got the last punch. The two hours flew by and Chris pulled into the dirt parking area reserved for horse trailers taking people into the backcountry. Vin jumped out of the truck and quickly began organizing the sacks that would be placed on the packhorse. JD gave him a hand while Chris and the others got the horses off the trailer. Vin made sure he distributed the items evenly in the sacks so the packsaddle wouldn't rub Pete. Vin gave Pete a good brushing then put the pad over his back then placed the pack frame over that. Vin tightened the girth then went to tack Peso. He gave the black gelding a treat from his pocket as he brushed him. When he was done he threw the saddle pad over his withers than threw on the saddle. Once the girth was tightened he left Peso and went back to Pete. Nettie's packhorse was notorious for holding his breath when you tightened his girth. Vin took Pete by surprise and was able to pull the girth up three more notches. Pete gave Vin a dirty look as he started placing the leather sacks on the frame. When Vin was done he gave Pete one of the treats then walked around to the rest of the horses giving them each one. Vin smiled at Ezra as he watched the fancy undercover agent with Hemp. When Ezra didn't think anyone was looking he would talk quietly with the chestnut. Ezra had come a long way since he first approached Chris about getting the quarter horses. Ezra admitted he didn't know much about horses. He knew how to ride because Maude said it was a gentlemanly sport. It took them about a half-hour to get the horses tacked. They each had a bedroll and blanket tied behind their saddle as well as saddlebags. It was almost noon when they were done and they decided to eat lunch before they started out. Vin brought out the plastic container Nettie gave him and opened the lid.

"I love these!" JD exclaimed.

Nettie had made meat pies that had a flaky crust and a rich meaty filling. She made enough for them to each have three. Vin decided to save one and put it in a plastic bag. Nettie also supplied oatmeal cookies. Nettie's weren't the hard ones from the store but were soft and chewy and loaded with raisins.

"Think Nettie would marry me if I asked," Buck said as he sunk his teeth into a cookie.

"Don't think so," Vin said seriously. "She's got better taste."

Buck hadn't expected that and choked on the cookie. Josiah hit him on the back while the others laughed. When they were finished with lunch they checked the horses one last time to make sure everything was set. Chris and Nathan locked up the vehicles. Nathan went over to Weasel and checked the first aid kit he placed in his saddlebag.

"Don't worry, Nathan, you won't need that," Vin said.

"Yeah, right," Nathan said not believing him.

"Suit yourself," Vin smiled. "I got better stuff in my bags."

JD was curious to see what Vin had and smiled when he looked in them. One of Vin's saddlebags was full of hostess cup cakes, Devil Dogs and other things him and JD considered the four essential food groups.

"Where did you get that?" Chris asked.

"Nettie," Vin smiled.

Chris just shook his head as he mounted. The others mounted their horses and Vin took the lead following a trail leading away from the parking area. It was a beautiful day with not a cloud in the sky. Vin turned in his saddle and looked at the others. Chris was dressed in his customary black but he'd added a flat brimmed black cowboy hat to finish off the look. JD was behind him and Vin smiled at his choice of hat. The kid had chosen a brown bowler hat that Buck thought was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever seen. Buck's hat was a battered gray hat with a wide brim. Josiah had a serape over his shirt with a large gray hat perched on his head. Josiah was leading Pete who followed sedately behind Quincy. Nathan's hat was also black but his had a round crown where Chris's was flat. Ezra had a small brimmed black hat that made him look like an old west riverboat gambler. Chris saw Vin looking back and smiled. Vin pulled down on his battered gray cavalry hat and turned back to the trail. Before leaving Vin had pulled on a fringed suede coat. Vin thought they looked like some group out of an old west dime store novel.

+ + + + + + +

Vin led them on a well-marked trail for about two hours when he turned off and headed deeper into the forest. Most people didn't know this trail existed but Vin had studied the maps provided by the forest service. They didn't like people to make their own trails and disturbing the native plants. Chris always had a hard time finding the trail so let Vin take the lead. Buck had camped with Chris a few times before Sarah and Adam were killed but never anything like this. They never went far from the house in case they had to get back quickly. JD asked how long they would be riding. Chris told them most of the day, which hadn't pleased Ezra. Vin laughed and assured him they would take a few breaks along the way. The first break came about an hour after they left the main trail. Vin pulled up Peso along a stream and let him drink. They had been walking through an area dominated by old growth pines. The forest floor was littered with pine needles that released their distinctive aroma as the horses crushed them beneath their feet. Since the trees were tall and spread far apart from each other they were all able to ride up to the stream to let the horses drink.

"This is our first stop, Ez," Vin announced. He pulled the meat pie out of his pocket and began to munch on it.

Ezra gratefully slid out of the saddle. When his feet hit the ground he almost collapsed. His legs weren't used to holding him. The others dismounted and waked around to work the stiffness out of their legs. Nathan noticed Vin get off Peso and rub his lower back. Vin bent at the waist with his head dangling down trying to stretch out his back.

"Back bothering you?" Nathan asked. They all knew Vin had a slight curve to his lower back that made Vin tend to lean.

"Some," Vin admitted standing back up. "Haven't been riding in almost two months."

Nathan laughed as Vin emphasized two months so Chris would hear him. Chris gave Vin the finger and the sharpshooter just smiled. Nathan had Vin sit on a log and hold up the back of his jacket while he tried to work out some of the stiffness. Vin did as Nathan said and sat eating the meat pie while Nathan messaged his back. JD wandered away to take pictures. The sun coming through the branches left interesting patterns on the forest floor. They stayed for twenty minutes then mounted up to continue on their way. The path continued along the stream for about a mile before it crossed to the other side. Pete gave Josiah a hard time about entering the water. With a little persuasion, and a treat from Vin, the packhorse followed. JD noticed as they continued to ride they were gradually heading up the mountain. The air was starting to get cold and JD pulled on the denim jacket he had tied to his saddle. The others did the same thing as they continued to ride. They left the pine forest forty-five minutes later to enter a high country meadow showing off it's last colors before the Autumn storms came. The path went around the field and JD marveled at the vivid reds, blues and yellows of the wild flowers. Ezra said it reminded him of paintings by Monet.

"Really," Vin said. "He painted wild flowers?"

"Monet loved the colors," Ezra said. "His inspiration came from fields in Europe but they didn't look much different from this."

"Would like to see some of them paintings," Vin said.

"An exhibit of his paintings are coming to the fines arts museum in two weeks," Ezra said. "I would be happy to accompany you."

"That would be great," Vin said and turned back to the trail.

Chris smiled knowing how pleased Ezra would be to show Vin the exhibit. Vin often went with Ezra to museums. The quiet sharpshooter liked to listen to Ezra explain about the different artists. The only exhibit Vin hadn't enjoyed was the modern art. Vin couldn't understand how a canvas painted completely red with nothing on it could be art. He said he could do that himself. So Ezra mostly took Vin to see the old masters like Rembrant, Michelangelo and others. As they continued up the mountain the air started to get thinner and they walked the horses so they wouldn't become winded.

"How much further?" JD asked when he noticed the sun starting to go down.

"Not far," Vin announced.

They started to come to a plateau and they were glad as the trail began to level out. Vin tuned right off the trail for about a mile then stopped.

"This is it," he announced.

"Wow," JD said.

"You said it, kid," Buck agreed.

Vin had led them to a small meadow with one side up against an outcropping from the mountain. Over this outcropping was a small waterfall that feed into a stream that meandered it's way down the mountain. Next to the waterfall were some pine trees and Vin led them towards the tress. Vin stopped the horses under the trees and dismounted. The others followed his example. Vin began to take off Peso's saddle and bridle. They had put the bridles on over the horse's halters. Vin clipped a line to his bridle and took him to the stream for a drink. When he was done he took the ropes off the top of the packs, on Pete, and strung them between the trees. He tied Peso's line to the rope and went to help get the packs off Pete. JD and Buck followed Vin's example then went to go find firewood. They decided to pitch camp under the trees but close to the horses so they could keep and eye on them. Nathan and Josiah started putting up one of the two tents. Vin grabbed the other one and Ezra helped. In no time the tents were up and Chris came over after securing all the horses. JD and Buck both came back with an armload of wood.

"Come on, JD, let's go over by the stream to get rocks for the fire ring," Vin said as he picked up one of the empty packs.

They came back a few minutes later with the bag full of large rocks. Josiah was getting the food out of the packs while Nathan set up the equipment to make dinner. Vin grabbed the shovel and began to dig a fire ring between the two tents. He cleared away the pine needles and began digging. After a few minutes Chris noticed Vin was becoming winded.

"Vin why don't I do that," Chris said as he walked over. "You and JD can fill the water jugs."

"Didn't realize how out of shape I was," Vin said as he handed the shovel to Chris.

"I'll give you boys a hand," Buck said as he grabbed one of the collapsible water jugs.

Chris finished with the hole then placed the rocks around the edge. When that was done he placed some kindling at the bottom and made a tipi over that with other sticks. He placed a fire starter brick in amongst the kindling they lit a match. The fire starter caught quickly and spread to the kindling. After only a few minutes Chris had a nice fire going. Buck, Vin and JD came back each carrying a jug. Chris noticed that Vin was carrying the smallest of the bunch. They placed one close to the fire in case it got out of hand. Ezra came out of the tents after spread out everyone's bedrolls.

"Gonna let the horses graze," Vin said.

"I'll help," JD said and followed Vin.

Chris watched as Vin untied the horses and led four of them out into the meadow. JD followed with the others. The horses eagerly began to eat. The horses didn't try to wander around since there was amble grass where Vin and JD led them.

"This was a great idea Chris," Nathan said. "Vin seems like his old self already."

"I know," Chris smiled. "I just hope he doesn't over do it."

"The only way you can insure that he doesn't is to hobble him," Ezra said.

"Like to see ya try," Buck laughed as he feed wood to the fire. "Don't worry nothings going to happen on this trip."

Chapter 3

The next morning Chris rolled out of his sleeping bag and groaned. He wasn't used to sleeping out in the open any more. Buck was stirring across the dead fire and Chris smiled as he heard Buck's bones crack.

"Aw hell," Buck said rubbing his shoulder. "I'm getting too old for this shit."

"Makes two of us," Chris said as he stood up and stretched his back.

"I see the two nature lovers are already up and gone," Buck commented when he saw Vin and JD’s empty sleeping bags.

"Guess so," Chris said as he stoked up the fire.

"It's about time y'all woke up," Vin called as he walked into the campsite.

"Yeah," JD said. "We've already caught breakfast."

"This is a vacation," Buck reminded them. "You know sleep in late and that kind of thing."

"Where's the fun in that?" Vin asked as he put the fish on skewers.

Buck grumbled as he rolled his sleeping bag. JD put some logs on the fire while Chris got the coffeepot ready. When the fire was blazing again Vin began to cook the fish. Chris put on the coffee and waited impatiently for it to finish. JD helped Vin and they discussed what they had planned for the day. The coffee was finally ready and Chris grabbed for the pot. He hastily pulled his fingers back from the hot metal.

"Here hold this," Vin said as he handed Chris one of the fish.

Vin grabbed a rag and took the pot of coffee off the fire. As he poured a cup for Chris Josiah stepped out of his tent. The older agent stretched and breathed in a ling full of air then let it out slowly.

"Nothing like waking to the smell of coffee in the woods," Josiah said as he joined the others.

"Here ya go, Josiah," JD said handing him a cup of coffee.

JD gave a cup to Buck as Vin handed one to Chris. When the fish were finished they each took one. Vin sat next to Chris eating the trout off the stick.

"This is awesome," JD said as he took a bite of his fish.

"Y'all be careful of the bones," Nathan ordered as he came out of the tent. "Don't want to rush any of ya's to the hospital if you swallow one."

"He takes the fun out of everything," Vin complained as he pulled a fish bone out of his mouth and threw it in the fire.

As they ate Ezra finally emerged from his tent. The undercover agent looked terrible. He stumbled over to the fire and sat down. Josiah handed him a cup of coffee and he took it gratefully.

"I don't know how any of you can sleep in the wilderness," Ezra said. "I was up all night listening to this poor animal moaning."

"Hell Ezra, that wasn't an animal," JD smiled. "That was Buck snoring."

They all laughed as Buck tried to grab JD but missed. Buck warned JD that paybacks were hell. JD commented that he was shaking in his boots then stuck his tongue out at Buck. Vin went to take care of the horses and JD gave him a hand. They took the horses down stream of their camp so they could drink. When the horses were done they led the horses out into the meadow and hobbled them so they could forage. After breakfast was finished Vin policed the camp for any food left over and took it into the woods to bury it. As he came back to the fire Nathan noticed he was breathing heavy.

"You all right, Vin?" he asked.

"Just a little winded," Vin admitted. "Ain't used to being up this high."

"You take it easy," Nathan warned.

"Yes dad," Vin said as he rolled his eyes.

"So what are we going to do first?" JD asked eagerly.

"Thought we might go for a hike," Vin said. "I know this trail that leads to another waterfall."

"Alright!" JD exclaimed.

"I think I'll pass," Ezra said. "I'll stay and watch the horses."

"You don't have to," Buck said. "They won't go far."

"I’d prefer to stay here and enjoy the solitude," Ezra said.

"Ezra is going to commune with nature?" Josiah asked shocked.

"After working with theses animals," Ezra said pointing to Buck and JD. "I need a break."

"Suit yourself, Fancy pants," Buck said. "I can't wait to see this waterfall."

"Think I'll stay behind also," Josiah said. "There is a beautiful spot down by the river for meditating."

"Okay," Vin said with a shrug. "We'll be gone a couple of hours so we should pack something to eat."

They each packed some trail mix and fruit into their daypacks. Vin told them also to pack a long sleeve shirt in case it got cold. Chris said he'd carry the water purifier and they were ready to head out. Vin led the way and the others followed. JD walked up front with Vin and Buck got a sense of deja vu. He shook himself knowing that what happened to them on their last camping trip wouldn't happen again. Vin quizzed JD about what he told him and the youngest eagerly pointed out the different trees to Vin. Buck got in on the game and tried to get JD confused. Vin finally told him to go away and Buck laughed. Buck, Chris and Nathan fell back as they strolled at a slower pace.

"Vin sure is in a better mood," Buck commented as they watched the two youngest disappear up ahead.

"This was just what he needed," Nathan agreed.

"Yeah being cooped up at the ranch for the past few weeks were getting to him," Chris said.

"You needed this also," Nathan said.

"Yeah I did," Chris smiled. "For awhile there I was ready to strangled Vin."

"I bet," Buck laughed. "That boy has quite a temper."

"Wasn't his fault," Chris defended Vin. "The medication was reeking havoc on his system."

"We know," Nathan said.

"That's why he ain't dead yet," Buck smiled.

Nathan and Chris laughed as they followed Buck.

JD was having a great time. He liked being in the woods with Vin. The sharpshooter knew a lot about the wilderness. JD asked him where he learned everything and Vin said mostly from books.

"You mean you got all this from books?" JD asked surprised.

"Mostly," Vin said. "And some from Nettie."

"Nettie?"

"Don't look so surprised," Vin laughed. "She knows a lot about all sorts of things."

"Yeah she does," JD agreed. "Come on I'll race you to that boulder."

JD took off running and Vin followed. Vin gave it his best shot but he knew he wouldn't be able to beat JD. For the past month he'd been taking it easy and was out of condition. As he neared the boulder he was having trouble catching his breath. JD made it to the boulder first and went to tease Vin about beating him when he saw Vin was in trouble.

"Are you okay?" JD asked anxiously as he helped Vin over to the rock so he could sit down.

"Damn thin airs making it tough to catch my breath," Vin said panting as he sat. "Feel dizzy."

"Damn," JD said as he looked around for the others.

He hadn't realized they were so far ahead. JD felt like an idiot challenging Vin to a race. JD remembered a little from the first responder courses they were required to take and made Vin put his head between his knees. JD chewed on his lower lip as he stood next to Vin and waited for the others. It felt like an eternity before he saw Buck come around the bend. JD waved and he heard Buck call back to Nathan. The three men ran the short distance to JD.

"What happened!" Chris demanded.

"We..." JD began.

"Walked too fast," Vin said cutting off JD as he sat up. "Got a little dizzy."

"How are ya feeling now?" Nathan asked as he took Vin's right wrist and checked his pulse.

"Still a little light headed," Vin admitted.

"Trouble breathing," Nate said not looking up from his watch.

"Some."

"Nate?" Chris asked.

"He's alright, Chris," Nathan smiled as he let go of Vin. "Airs thinner up here and he's just gonna have to go slower."

"Never bothered me before," Vin protested.

"Well you've been sick," Chris said reminding him.

"I know that!" Vin snapped.

Buck whistled while JD looked everywhere except at Chris. Nathan just shook his head as he stood up. Vin hunched his shoulders and hung his head looking down at the ground. Chris just sighed and looked at Buck.

"Come on JD why don't you show me everything Juniors been teaching you," Buck said.

"Sure, Buck, I can do that," JD readily agreed as he followed his roommate up the trail.

"Think I'll join you," Nathan said as he smiled at Chris.

Chris watched as the others disappeared up the trail. Vin was still staring at the ground as Chris sat next to him on the boulder. Chris didn't say anything as he watched Vin lean over and pick up a rock.

"I hate this!" Vin yelled as he hurled the rock against a tree.

"And you think I don't?" Chris laughed. "You've been a fucking pain in the ass, Tanner."

"You wish I've been fucking your ass you mean," Vin smiled mischievously.

"You’re right," Chris agreed as he put his arm around Vin's shoulder.

"I'm sorry, Chris."

"I know," Chris said as he grabbed Vin in a headlock. "Do it another time and we're gonna tangle."

"Can't promise nothing."

"I know," Chris said seriously as he released Vin. "But we'll work it out."

"Reckon we will," Vin smiled as he leaned over and kissed Chris.

Chris pulled Vin against him as he returned the kiss. He was surprised when Vin started pulling up his shirt. Chris hadn't felt Vin respond this way in awhile. Before it could go too far Chris released Vin and backed up.

"Whoa, partner, we've got people waiting for us."

"Let them wait," Vin said as he leaned towards Chris.

"We can't," Chris laughed.

"Why?" Vin asked leaning into him again.

"Damn it, Tanner!" Chris growled as he placed his hands against Vin's shoulders and pushed him away.

"All right," Vin said with a smile. "I'll take you later."

Chris just shook his head as he watched Vin walk up the path. This roller coaster of emotions from Vin was starting to get old. But this had felt different. Vin had responded with some of his old vigor not the tentative way he did while on the drugs. Chris just shook his head as he followed Vin.

Another hour saw them standing next to an incredible waterfall. This one was much bigger than the one by their camp. It thundered over the edge of the mountain sending spray in a thick cloud. The water droplets formed a rainbow that arched over the falls.

"It's beautiful!" JD exclaimed.

"Josiah's gonna be sorry he missed it," Nathan said.

"This one feeds into the smaller one by our camp," Vin said. "There's a small catch basin before the water flows into the falls further down. Come on I'll show you."

They followed Vin along the stream. As they walked the roar of the falls was quieted once they past a stand of birch. Once through the trees they found the catch basin.

"If you walk over to the edge you'll see the camp below," Vin said.

"Cool!" JD said as he headed for the rocks.

"I better go with him and make sure he doesn't fall," Buck said.

"Who's going to watch you?" Chris asked.

Buck just rolled his eyes and followed JD. Vin sat at the water's edge and pulled off his hiking boots. When his boots were off he took off his socks and put his feet in the water. Nathan thought that was a great idea and followed Vin's example.

"God, almighty, that's cold!" Nathan said snatching his feet back out.

Vin laughed as he lay back in the grass. "It's from the snowmelt further up the mountains."

"Don't know how you can stand it," Nathan said as he pulled his socks back on.

"I can't," Vin said as he pulled his feet out and shivered. "I just wanted to see what you would do."

Nathan grabbed the closest item at hand and threw it at Vin. The handful of pine needles landed right on Vin's face and he sneezed. Vin sat up brushing the fragrant needles out of his hair. He pulled on his socks and hiking boots then grabbed his backpack and pulled out something to eat. Chris joined them and pulled out what was in his backpack. Vin took an apple and lay back in the grass. JD came back over talking excitedly about the falls and how far away the camp looked. The noon sun was warm and they all enjoyed their time together.

"Guess we should be heading back," JD said. "I want to get some fishing in before dark."

"Sounds good JD," Buck agreed as he began putting the empty food wrappers back in his pack.

"The three of you go on ahead," Chris said.

"Why?" JD asked as he zippered his pack.

"Vin's sleeping," Nathan said pointing to Vin who was sprawled on his back out cold.

"Well, pard, looks like you're going to have an exciting afternoon," Buck teased.

"See you back at camp," JD said as he started down the path.

"Have fun," Nathan said.

"Believe me I will," Chris said.

Chris watched as the others disappeared through the trees. He decided Vin had a good idea and stretched out beside him. The warm sun and the sounds of the falls soon had Chris snoring next to Vin.

Chris woke with a start when he felt something brushes his lips. He heard a chuckle to his right and turned his head.

"’Bout time you woke up," Vin said smiling.

"Look who’s talking," Chris said as he propped his head on his hand.

"I’m awake now."

Vin leaned over and pulled Chris into a kiss. Chris rolled over Vin and returned the kiss. Vin’s hands started to roam and began to un-button Chris’s shirt. Chris responded in kind and ran his finger through Vin’s hair. Vin began to became forceful as he quickly moved from Chris’s shirt to the button on Chris’s jeans. Chris realized where this was going and tried to pull away from Vin.

"Hold on Vin," Chris said pushing him back.

"Don’t talk, cowboy," Vin said trying to pull Chris back into the kiss.

"Just a minute," Chris said struggling. "Are you sure."

"God damn it, Chris, does this answer your question?"

Vin grabbed Chris’s hand and placed it on his cock. Chris just smiled when he realized Vin had started before him and was now as hard as a rock. Chris grabbed Vin’s shirt and pulled it over his head then tossed it to the side. Vin wiggled out of his jeans and boxers and let them sag around his knees. Chris finished un-buttoning his shirt and tossed it with Vin’s. Vin tugged at Chris’s jeans and became frustrated with the button since Chris’s cock had responded to Vin’s lust and was making the jeans tight. Chris knocked his hands away and struggled with the tight button and zipper. Sighing in relief Chris pushed his jeans down then stretched out on top of Vin. Vin moaned as Chris’s cock rubbed against his.

"Afraid this is gonna be fast and furious," Vin gasped. "I can’t wait."

Vin grabbed Chris’s head and pulled him down in a crushing kiss. Chris was surprised at Vin’s behavior but all thoughts were pushed aside as Vin grabbed his cock. Chris jumped then moaned as Vin began to stroke it.

"Chris I need ya inside me."

"Don’t want to rush this," Chris gasped. "It’s been awhile.

"Hell, Cowboy, ain’t like we don’t know what to do," Vin chuckled. "It’s just been awhile and I really want ya to fuck me."

Vin grabbed Chris and rolled over so that he was on top. Once he was on top he took Chris’s right nipple between his teeth and bit down. Chris yelped as Vin’s teeth pinched the sensitive tip. Vin quickly moved away as he trailed kisses down Chris’s stomach. Chris lay back and clutched the grass as Vin took his swollen cock into his mouth and began to suck on it. Chris groaned as he bucked his hips to drive his dick deeper into Vin’s mouth. Vin obliged him and deep throated Chris’s cock.

"Shit!" Chris cursed as he fought to keep himself from pushing further.

Suddenly Vin’s warm mouth was gone and Chris looked up in surprise. Vin was on all fours with his ass towards Chris.

"Show me what you got, Stud," Vin teased.

Chris smacked Vin on the ass for the smart remark as he knelt behind Vin. Pre-cum was already leaking from Chris’s cock and he spread it over the swollen member. Chris put the head of his cock against Vin’s hole and pushed. Vin gasped at the pain and Chris held himself steady as Vin adjusted.

"Enjoyin’ the view or do ya plan to do something?" Vin asked as he pushed back.

"I could just shoot you and put you out of your misery."

Chris slowly pushed his cock into Vin and gasped at the feel. It felt like forever since he gave Vin a good fuck and he wasn’t sure if he could hold out much longer. Obviously Vin felt the same way as he pushed hard against Chris. Chris grunted as his cock was buried to the hilt.

"Damn it, Chris! Move!"

Chris didn’t need any more coaxing as he slowly pulled out of Vin then pushed back in. It wasn’t long before they were bucking hard against each other. Vin’s breath was coming in ragged gasps as he was finally brought to climax spewing his cum over the grass. When the orgasm hit he felt a sharp pain in his right chest and gasped. He didn’t think anything of it figured he pulled a muscle. Chris came shortly after he did and he could feel his release. Chris pulled him up for a kiss when he noticed how hard Vin was breathing.

"Damn it, Vin," Chris said pulling out of him and making Vin lie down. "You okay?"

"Always…said you…took my…breath away," Vin gasped.

"You’re full of shit," Chris said smacking his hip. "Are you okay, really?"

"Yeah," Vin wheezed. "Damned thin air up here."

"Yeah," Chris smiled when he saw Vin wasn’t breathing as hard. "We better get cleaned up and head back."

Vin nodded and they both moved over to the lake.

+ + + + + + +

"There they are!" JD yelled pointing.

Nathan had started to get worried when it started to get late and Chris and Vin weren’t back yet. He looked up when JD called and he could see the two men walking towards them. Ezra smiled as he waited by the fire stirring what was in the pot for dinner.

"So what kept ya?" JD asked.

"Just enjoying the solitude," Vin said.

"And other things," Chris added smiling which caused Vin to look away quickly.

"Aw hell!" Buck cursed and fished in his pocket. He pulled out a twenty and handed it to Ezra.

Vin looked on in shock. "You know!"

"Yeah Vin we do," Josiah said throwing his arm over the younger mans shoulder.

"How long?" Vin asked suspiciously.

"Long enough," Nathan added.

"And you’re okay with it? All of you?"

"Yes, Mr. Tanner, we are."

"Good," Vin said. "Didn’t want to have to pussy foot around you guys. Always having to lie and such."

"Well now that you know we know can we eat?" JD asked.

They all laughed and took seats around the fire. JD and Buck started bickering over which fish was theirs as Ezra reached over and took the largest one. Buck then started in on Ezra who promptly said ‘you snooze you lose’. JD burst out laughing as he took one of the fish and leaned back on the log. Buck grumbled and took his dinner over to where Josiah was sitting. Vin dished up a plate for Chris then one for himself. He took it over to where Chris was sitting and sat on the ground by Chris’s feet. Vin smiled when he felt Chris gave his neck a squeeze before he started on his own dinner. He was good knowing they guys wouldn’t treat them any different than before. Vin began to eat thinking this was going to be the best trip ever.
