"See my new little baby girl. Isn't she beautiful."
"Uh... yeah, Ez. She's ah... something special."
"Gentlemen, I will return momentarily," Ezra said before stepping over to the corner of the room to sign some paperwork.
"Anyone remember that show 'V'?"
"Yeah?"
"I was just thinkin'," Vin widened his eyes dramatically, "how cute those alien babies was compared to this one."
"Shhh. Don't let Ezra hear you say that."
"It's not Ez's fault that his baby looks like a lizard."
"But not a cute lizard like those ones on the Bud Light commercials."
"No. A really ugly lizard, like a Komodo dragon."
"A Komodo dragon isn't a lizard. It's a dragon."
"Is too a lizard. Komodo dragon is just its name. Ain't no real dragons."
"I beg to differ, brother Vin. I've seen a dragon."
"Yeah, LSD can do that to you."
"Shh! Shh! He's coming back."
"So, gentelmen, what do you think of my darlin' little baby girl."
"Uh... she's... uh... "
Buck elbowed JD in the ribs. "What the kid's trying to say is, she's um... " He swallowed hard. "Nathan?"
Nathan tried to shake the horrified look off his face. "Oh. Ezra, she's a... a gift from God."
The men sighed with relief.
Josiah patted the Southerner on the back. "That she is, brother Ezra. That she is."
"Thank you, gentlemen." Ezra wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. "She'll have to stay with her mother for a while of course, but then- Oh, I think I hear my name being called again. Excuse me."
"A gift from God?" JD squeaked.
"I didn't say which god." Nathan grinned.
"Isn't there a lizard god?" Josiah inquired.
Vin smirked happily. "Like the thing in 'Clash of the Titans'?"
"Exactly!" Josiah's face lit up.
The men grew quiet as they studied the small body wrapped in a plaid blanket.
"I thought these things were supposed to be," JD waved his hand in front of him, "cute, or something."
"They, are." Buck shrugged. "Usually."
Vin shook his head. "What in God's name was Ez thinking?"
"The Lord only knows," Nathan sighed.
They all looked at Josiah.
"Don't look at me," Josiah laughed. "I'm still trying to figure Him out."
"Well, as long as Ezra's happy, we should be happy too."
"Yeah, at least he has an 'heir' now."
The men grinned at each other and then, as one, all stared down at the little newborn Pug puppy.
