JD was bored. Ever since Buck left for that conference on Starbase 14, JD had been wandering the ship looking for something to do. Usually he would spend his off-hours with either Buck or Casey. Unfortunately Casey was working on a special project and had to work over time. So JD was wandering the ship bored. If Josiah knew he would be afraid, very afraid, since a bored JD could get into a lot of trouble. The only thing worse than a bored JD was a bored Vin. JD had gone to the 10-forward "saloon" for a little while but nothing was happening there. He finally decided to go use the holodeck.
He walked towards holodeck and saw it was in use. He asked the computer who was using it and what program was running. The mechanical female voice informed him that Lieutenant Tanner was using the hot pools of Bellara program. JD tried to enter and found that access was denied. Obviously Vin didn't want anyone to enter while he was using the program. This got JD curious since the pools were only used to soak in. He opened the panel next to the door and rewired the controls to let himself in. As the doors opened he could feel the heat form the tropical rainforest waft out into the corridor. The delicate sound of a waterfall could be heard further inside. JD stepped in and locked the door behind him. He'd used this program a time or two and decided to sneak up on Vin. He figured the Vulcan was over by the waterfall. The ensign silently made his way towards the waterfall. When he was close enough he hid under a large fern and parted the leaves to see if he could spot Vin. He wasn't quiet prepared for what he saw.
Vin was sitting on the side of the pool naked. It seemed Vin was missing the captain more than JD missed Buck. JD watched in a mixture of horror and fascination as he saw Vin please himself. Josiah couldn't figure out what was wrong. For the past twenty-four hours he'd watched Vin and JD avoid each other like the plague. He knew something must have happened between the two youngest when Vin begged to be put on third watch on the bridge. Josiah couldn't refuse the Vulcan and he'd switched schedules. Now he was sitting on the bridge with JD sitting at navigation. Every once in awhile he'd glance towards ops and sigh. Josiah turned to Ezra and was rewarded with a shake of the security chief's head. Ezra had tried to get Vin to talk to him but the Vulcan had refused. Even Nathan noticed that Vin was more withdrawn when he was with other people. Josiah was just glad Buck and Chris were due back in a few hours. He knew they'd be able to get to the bottom of things.
Captain Chris Larabee of the USS Maverick was not amused. The conference was a total waste of his time and Chris hated that. The conference had ended up being a meeting where the upper brass congratulated themselves on jobs well done, taking all the credit for what others had accomplished. Buck knew Chris was pissed and wisely kept his mouth shut on the ride back to their ship. Buck was looking forward to spending time with JD. He'd missed the kid while he was gone. JD could always make him laugh. Buck was never so happy to see the Maverick when the came out form behind one of the planets in the Four Corners quadrant. Buck called for landing clearance and when he received it he headed for shuttle bay two. Buck expertly landed the shuttle and secured all hatches. When the bay was pressurized he opened the doors to the shuttle and climbed out. Chris sat alone for a few minutes and tried to calm down. There was no reason to take his bad mood out on the others. He was actually looking forward to seeing Vin. He smiled as he imagined what the Vulcan had planned for this homecoming. He stepped out of the shuttle and saw Josiah, Nathan and Ezra waiting for him.
"What's wrong?" Chris said instinctively.
"We're not sure," Josiah admitted. "Something happened between JD and Vin."
"They get into a fight?" Buck asked.
"Apparently," Ezra said. "They have been avoiding each other and Vin has been avoiding everyone else. Right now he's hiding."
"Do you know where?" Chris asked in concern.
"Yes," Ezra answered. "He's in the old stellar cartography dome."
"Only Vin would like it up there," Buck said.
Chris wasn't surprised either. The dome was the tip of the port nacelle. Most people couldn't be bothered going all the way out there and that's how stellar cartography ended up with a new dome that was easier to get to. Vin loved the old dome because he could get away from everyone out there. Chris didn't relish the idea of going all the way out there and decided to start with JD.
"Where's JD?" Chris asked.
"He's on duty," Josiah said.
"Good, we'll start there," Chris said.
"You better let me handle JD," Buck said. "Look, Chris, JD idolizes you. If he thought you were mad at him for what happened he'd be really upset. So let me find out what's bothering the kid and I'll get back to ya."
"Well, make it quick," Chris said. "I don't feel like walking all the way out to the old dome."
"You won't have to Captain," Ezra said. "Vin is on duty in a few hours and he'll be back."
"But that's the grave yard shift," Chris said confused.
"He begged me to assign him to it Chris," Josiah said. "I couldn't refuse him."
"It's that bad that he didn't want to be on the bridge with JD?" Chris asked.
"Apparently," Ezra said.
"Damn!" Buck cursed. "I better go talk to the kid."
They all made their way to the bridge. When they waked off the turbolift JD was so glad to see them.
"Captain I have to talk to you," JD blurted.
"All right," Chris said raising his eyebrows at Buck.
"Mind if I come too, kid?" Buck asked.
"Yeah, sure Buck," JD said in relief.
Chris led them to his office and closed the door. He took a seat behind his desk and waited for JD to tell them what had happened. Buck took a seat and they watched him pace for a few minutes. He stopped and looked at them and the dam burst. JD just started talking, telling them everything. When he was done he looked ashamed and truly sorry.
"There's nothing to be sorry about JD," Chris assured him.
"Vin hates me now!" JD cried.
"I don't think so," Buck said. "He's just confused."
"And if I know Vin he's blaming himself for the whole thing. He's always so afraid of his strength and what he might do."
"Well he did scare me when he wouldn't let go," JD admitted. "I never realized how strong he was."
"Poor kid's so confused about what he is," Buck began. "When he thinks he's got it figured out, something like this happens."
"I'm sorry Chris," JD said hanging his head.
"Not your fault Kid," Chris said. "Vin's experiencing new things right now and I think he was just curious."
"And you know what he's like when he gets curious," Buck said.
"Yeah," JD said with a smile. "He has a one track mind."
"Yup and his mind was on you," Buck teased and JD blushed.
"I've tried to talk to him, Chris, he just won't let me," JD said. "I just wanted to tell him it was a misunderstanding, That we're still friends."
"Alright this is what we'll do..." Chris said.+ + + + + + +
Vin was lying on his back looking up at the stars when he received the orders to come to Chris's cabin. He was thinking of disobeying but he just couldn't. So he made the long walk back down the port nacelle and over to Chris cabin. Chris told him to enter when he hit the call button. He was surprised to walk in and find JD and Buck also in the cabin. Suddenly he realized what was going on and backed towards the door.
"Going somewhere?" Chris asked with a smile.
"I'm sorry, Chris, I didn't mean for it to happen," Vin blurted. "If you want to transfer me I understand."
"No one's getting transferred," Chris said. "JD just wants to talk to you."
"I'm sorry," JD said. "It was a misunderstanding."
"But I thought you liked it?" Vin asked confused.
"Well....I.....um....I did," JD said blushing. "But I realized it wasn't for me. That I really like Casey."
"So since you like Casey you can't have sex with me?" Vin asked innocently. JD just starred at Vin in shock.
"You see Vin it's like this," Buck said coming to JD's rescue. "There's a special someone for everyone. For you it's Chris and for JD it seems to be Casey. Now when you find that special someone you always know it's right when you have sex."
"So that means all the women on the ship are your special someone?" Vin asked and Chris burst out laughing.
"Yeah, Pard, that about covers it," Buck said with a smile.
"So does this mean we can still be friends?" Vin asked JD.
"Sure Vin," JD said. "I like you Vin."
"I like you too," Vin said with a big smile. "Ya wanna go get a hot fudge sundae?"
"Yeah sure!" JD said eagerly.
Chris and Buck watched as they both left talking up a storm. Buck turned to Chris and smiled.
"What's the matter, Chris, you mad Vin didn't give you a hello kiss?" Buck asked and Chris gave him a deadly look. "Don't worry I'm sure he'll make it up to you later."
Chris shook his head as he followed Buck down the corridor.
