We both lie silently still in the dead of the night Although we both lie close together We feel miles apart inside Was it somethin' I said or somethin' I did Did my words not come out right Tho' I tried not to hurt you Tho' I tried But I guess that's why they say
Every rose has its thorn
I know I could have saved our love that night
From "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" |
The room is silent as the two men lay side by side but, emotionally the distance is much greater. Vin Tanner is laying with his eyes shut praying for a solution but, there's not one to be found. "Chris, this just ain't workin'." I wish I didn't sound so damn pitiful."What's not working, Vin?" Please, don't let him say us. That we're not working.
Vin shaking his head. God, this hurts. Why do I gotta love him so damn much! "Ya know I love ya, Chris. But, sometimes love just ain't enough."
"What are you sayin'?" It was just an argument. He can't be serious! What can I say to make this right, again?
Vin stood up and retrieved his clothes. "I need time to think. If a case comes up, call me. If not, I'll see you Monday morning at work." Tell me to stay, Chris. Please, just tell me to stay.
Vin, why do I feel that if you walk out that door, you'll never walk back through it. Don't go. What can I say? Don't go.
Vin walked out of the bedroom, to the front door. Chris, tell me to stay.
"Vin" Chris called. Too late the door was already shut. He sat in the bed that suddenly seemed extremely cold. Maybe he just needs to calm down, get some fresh air. He'll come right back in. He's not serious. He's going to open the door and come right back in. He's not leavin'. That was his jeep starting. Oh god, he's really leaving. Chris threw the covers off and grabbed his clothes. "No, I'm not letting him run away from me."
Under normal circumstances Vin would never have gotten into a vehicle without putting on his seat belt. After his argument with Chris, he just wasn't thinking. He was driving too fast down the winding road that led to Chris' ranch. When he saw the deer that darted into his path his first reaction was to swerve. Wrong reaction, he knew it as soon as he had done it. He had been going too fast, the jeep wasn't going to stay on the road. Oh, Chris I'm sorry. His last thought was of Chris, as the jeep hit a pot-hole and flipped.
Chris had run out the door with his keys to go after Vin when he saw the jeep swerve off the road and start flipping. The jeep had turned over 3 times and then burst into flames. "NOOO" Chris screamed. He couldn't lose Vin like this. He ran to the vehicle determined to get Vin out. Vin, please don't do this. You can't leave me. I need you.
As he got closer to the vehicle he knew he was too late. He fell to his knees, with his hands over his face. A slight noise got his attention. Was that a moan? Could Vin, have gotten out of the jeep? Please, please Vin.
Vin was laying on the ground approximately 30 feet from the wreckage of his jeep. "Vin, I'm here. I'm gonna take care of ya." Chris was shaking as he was checking his best-friend for injuries. "Vin, I gotta go get the Ram. I'm gonna leave you here but, I'll be right back. I hate to leave him like this but, I have to get him to the hospital.
Chris ran back to the house for his truck and came back for Vin. When did he make me start caring, again? "Alright Vin, I'm going to get you to the hospital. Stay with me." Chris lifted him as gently as he could and placed him into the passenger seat of the Ram.
The drive to the hospital seemed to take forever. Vin still hadn't regained consciousness. Chris parked in front of the emergency entrance and ran into the building holding Vin.
"Mr. Larabee, which one?" the nurse asked. The hospital was very familiar with the seven ATF agents.
"Vin, he was in a car wreck. He hasn't woke up."
Two orderlies took Vin from Chris' arms and placed him onto a bed.
"Mr. Larabee, you need to wait out here. They'll take good care of him." The nurse named Tracy spoke to Chris.
"No, I'm going with him." Chris growled.
"Mr. Larabee. The doctor needs to concentrate on Mr. Tanner right now, not worry about you being in the wrong place." Tracy knew how these men were when one of them was hurt.
"Alright, I'll wait here. But, I want to know what's going on." Chris went to move his truck then took a seat in the waiting area. He had thought about calling the others but, didn't feel up to handling all the questions.
Vin, you can't leave me. Sarah and Adam left. I never thought I'd care about anything or anybody, again. But, dammit. You made me care. Hell, you're my best friend, my lover, my heart, my soul. Everything. You are everything to me. I don't even know what the damn argument was about anyway. Vin, I love you. What can I do to make things right?
Chris was interrupted from his pondering as he heard Vin's voice yelling. Chris went through the door leading him to Vin's voice. "Vin, what in the hell are you doing?"
"Leaving"
"Doctor, is that a wise idea?" Chris asked concerned. An hour ago Vin had been unconscious and now he was arguing with his doctor.
"Mr. Tanner has a concussion, a broken arm, some cuts and bruises. He can be released as soon as we set his arm and put a cast on it. However, he shouldn't be alone."
"He'll be with me, he won't be alone." Chris answered the doctor. He ain't never gonna be alone again.
+ + + + + + +
Chris and Vin were sitting in Chris' Ram. "You can take me to my place." Vin stated.
"Doc, says you don't need to be alone." I love you Vin, I want to be with you. I need to know you're okay. That we're okay.
" I can have one of the people in my building check on me." Chris, tell me you love me. That you want to be with me.
"You're staying with me, and that's it." Chris hated to respond to Vin with anger but, he didn't know what else to do. I'm going to get you home and then never let you go. Even if I have to tie you down, you aren't going to walk away.
The drive back to Chris' was done in silence until they came across the wreck. Chris shuddered when he saw the blackened remains of Vin's jeep. "I thought you were still.." Chris couldn't continue.
"I'm sorry Chris. It must have been hard for you after what happened with Sarah and Adam." Vin responded. I just wish you could love me like you loved her.
They had reached the ranch and Chris helped Vin out of the truck. "Vin, we need to talk."
"We've never been good with that." Vin answered.
"Well, we need to rectify that. When I saw you walk out that door." Chris swallowed. "You took my heart with you."
"Chris?" Oh god, is he saying what I think he is?
Chris reached out and touched Vin's cheek. "You are my best friend, my lover, my heart, my soul. You're the reason I wake up every morning. I love you Vin Tanner!" There I said it.
"Chris, I don't know what to say." Vin was in shock. Chris had finally said the words he longed for. 'I love you Vin Tanner'.
"Tell me that it's not too late. That you still love me. That you'll never leave."
"Chris, I love you and I'll never leave." Vin laughed, letting out all the fear and uncertainty he had been feeling.
Chris smiled and pulled Vin into his arms. "Just wait till you get this cast off, and I'll show you how much I love you."
THE END
