The wind was blowing through the town of Four Corners. The breeze
was just right. The sun was bright and giving off hot desert rays. The
people in Four Corners were sweating and doing their daily routines. Seven
men sat out side of the saloon drinking beer and talking about the fight
that took place in town last night. The men were well aware that the stage
was coming that afternoon and that it would be late as usual.
Chris Larabee was talking to Vin Tanner. "Vin
did you say that the stage was coming today?" Chris asked Vin.
"Yes, why?" Vin replied.
"It never comes later then one, and it's well
two. I want you and Ezra to ride out and see what's holding it up." Vin
and Ezra stood and walked to their horses.
Ezra Standish turned to Vin. "I see that Mr.
Larabee trusts you." Vin looked at Ezra as he got on his horse.
"Ezra what the hell do you mean by that?"
Ezra smiled.
"Last week you missed the stage and it took
a different track. I don't see why Mr. Larabee is trusting you once again."
Ezra said as he got on his horse.
Vin shook his head. "That wasn't my fault".
Ezra smiled. They headed out of town.
The stage coach was resting and the passengers just got off. Two men were
sitting by a tree and talking about the hold up. The men wiped their faces
and pulled out their flasks. One of the men was young and was wearing black.
He was well dressed and was caring a gun. His blue eyes shimmered when
he talked of gold and his clothes talked for him. He was rich and his father
who was with him talked of nothing but money. The older man sitting underneath
the tree was dressed in black and his brown eyes said gold. That is all
he wanted. He was a rich and stuck up man who had no use for his 18 year
old daughter. She sat next to the river and was listen to their conversation.
She was dressed in white velvet. Her blue eyes sparkled as she smiled.
Her hair was light brown and she had it up in a bun. Curls fell as the
wind lightly brushed her hair. Her dress was long but revealed more then
she was used to. Her chest was exposed and her shoulders were revealed
as well. She had tan skin and an angel face. She was rich also but meant
nothing to her brother or her father. She sat next to them dreaming of
a knight and shinning armor to take her away from her miserable life with
her family. They heard horses coming in the distances. They stood and watched
as the driver met them.
Vin and Ezra got off their horses and saw
Mac, the driver and they talked with him. "I'm glad to see you Mr. Tanner.
These horses need rest and well as you see the stage is full. Those three
by the tree are riding and those four are riding." He pointed to the river.
The two men and the girl walked up to Ezra, Vin, and Mac. The girl remanded
hidden behind her brother.
"Mr. Charleston I see you are ready to leave?"
Mac asked the older man.
"Yes I am. When will we be leaving?" He asked.
"Shortly," Mac said. The two men climbed into
the stage and Rachael was reviled. Vin and Ezra looked at her. Ezra couldn't
believe his eyes. He was drawn to her beauty and she had taken his breath
away. Rachael looked up at Ezra and smiled. Then she smiled at Vin. She
started to climb when Mac helped her in. "Miss Charleston, would you care
to ride in the front?" he asked as she was stepping up.
"Sir, could I?" she asked.
Mac smiled. "Of course." He helped her back
down but when she backed down and extra hand was on her back helping her
down. She didn't even see who it was she walked up to the front. Then she
passed out. Mac caught her. Vin and Ezra ran to her. Mac laid her on the
ground. She laid on the ground and Mac looked at Ezra. "She must be exhausted
from the heat," he said. Mr. Charleston looked through the window.
"Just leave her. She'll catch up." The three
men were shocked. Ezra was mad. He picked her up and looked at Vin. "She'll
journey back with me, Mr. Tanner. You sojourn with the stage," he said.
Then he put her on his horse and got on himself. Vin got on his horse and
the stage was ready to roll. Ezra rode away back to town.
As Ezra rode he held on to Rachael with one
hand he had it tightly around her waist and had one hand on the reins.
He felt the soft white velvet in his hand and her breathing heavily. He
could smell her perfume and it lingered on forever. He liked the way she
felt against his body and the way her body laid across his lap. He was
liking this girl more and more by the minute. He knew he wanted to spend
at least one night with her and he was thinking of how to talk her father
out of his money. He knew he had money because of the way he dressed and
the way he carried him self. He knew that her family was a gold mine. He
needed that money more then anything and poker was just the game to play.
He rode slowly and was trying to wake her
up. He tapped her lightly on the face, then he saw her eyes open. She woke
and she saw a red arm around her waist she jumped and Ezra smiled. "I see
you are attentive," he said in his southern drawl. She looked into his
green eyes and was mesmerized.
She smiled and asked, "Excuse me Mr.... but
what happened?" Her voice, which was soft, caught him off guard.
"You collapsed and I am taking you to a physician.
The stage is following us." Rachael didn't move and she nearly slipped
through Ezra's hands. He picked her up and put her back in his arms. He
laughed a little and she did to. She held on to his arm until they reached
town. She leaned up against him and could feel his heart beat faster as
she did. She could feel how hot he was and it didn't bother her. She was
tired and she just wanted to sleep. Ezra could feel her lean into him and
he smiled as she did. He held her tight and couldn't believe how is luck
was turning out. Just last night he won $200 and this girl fell into his
arms.
They hit Four Corners around three o'clock
and were greeted by the rest of the men who were waiting for their arrival.
Ezra stopped by the clinic and Nathan greeted him. Ezra got off his horse,
Ace, and he helped Rachael down. She stood but not for long. Her feet gave
way and Ezra picked her up. He carried her into the clinic and laid her
on the table.
Nathan walked in behind him. "What happened?"
Nathan asked.
"She fainted from heat exhaustion." Ezra walked
out the door. Nathan looked over Rachael. Ezra walked back to the stage
where other five men waited.
Ezra walked up to Chris and Chris asked "What
happened to the girl?"
Ezra looked at him. "She fainted in this god
awful weather," he said. Chris nodded. Vin and Mac unloaded the passengers
and the two men dressed in black got off last.
"You should of left her. Driver, these men
don't need to be wasting their time on nothing," he said.
Vin stepped up. "Mister, I don't know what
your problem is but you don't treat no lady like that. If I ever catch
you, do or say anything bad about her I'll make sure that you walk out
of here with one man short." Vin walked away.
The man in black turned to the men. "I am
telling you don't waist your time on her. She's nothing. She doesn't
know how to accommodate. She's a bad habit. The day she came into this
world was the day I was cursed." The two men walked away. The five men
couldn't believe what the man had said. Ezra was getting madder each second.
He heard and saw the way she talked which was fine to him. He walked over
to the saloon. The rest of the men followed.
Nathan gave Rachael water and sat on her
bed. He smiled and spoke to her. "I see Ezra brought you in, That's not
like him".
Rachael looked up from drinking her water.
"Ezra? Is that the gentlemen with the red coat?" she asked.
Nathan laughed. "Miss I think the heat got
to you. Ezra's no gentlemen. Ezra's a con and a gambler - he helps no one
but himself. And when he does help some one it's usually for money
or gold," he laughed as he stood. "Come on. Let's get you out walking
and get some fresh air." He helped her up and walked her out the door.
"What is you name, Mister?" she asked.
"My name is Nathan Jackson and yours?" he
asked.
She smiled. "Rachael Charleston," she said.
Nathan smiled. "That's a pretty name".
"Thank you".
Nathan walked her to the saloon. "The hotel
is that way and be sure to drink lots of water and get lots of rest," he
said. She smiled. Nathan joined his friends outside of the saloon. They
watched her walk away.
Nathan turned to Ezra. "Ezra what's up your
sleeve for that helpless girl?" They all turned to Ezra.
"Nothing I was merely acting as a good Samaritan".
They all looked at him. They all wondered was Ezra doing it for money or
was there something else that had is attention, What is it? The men sat
back and talked about the stage and other things.
Later that day Rachael walked from the hotel
to the church. She walked inside the church and looked around. She couldn't
believe how the church looked. She walked around and walked to the window.
She was amazed as how the church was still standing. She smiled as she
sat on the bench and looked at the ceiling. She was startled to see a man
watching her. He walked out and greeted the young woman. "Can I help you?"
Josiah asked. She looked at him. He was old and was tall. He was dirty
and was quite aware that she was startled. He had a white beard and mustache
but it was very short. The beard didn't go along his face like normal ones.
It stopped a little after his mouth. He asked her again. "Can I help you
Miss?"
She smiled. "Sir, do you know where I can
find the preacher?" she asked.
"Miss I'm the preacher, sorta of ex preacher
and I run this church. My name is Josiah Sanchez. Is there something you
need?" He asked.
"Sir. I didn't mean to barge in. I do not
need anything I just wanted to see this church. It has been awhile since
I've seen one." She stood slowly and walked to the front of the church
where Josiah was standing. She walked up to the podium. "It's been to long".
She sighed. Josiah moved closer to her.
"You know you can pray still. God has a way
of words and I don't think he'll mind if you still do." Josiah walked up
next to her.
She smiled. "I know but the last time I prayed
was 3 years ago when Mother died. I have been away from the church because
I was forced to by my father. I guess I have sinned but It's not my fault".
She said as she wiped a tear from her eye. She didn't want this man to
see her weak side. She remained strong as Josiah walked to her.
"God is not mad at you or holding anything
against you. It is just that time has to take it's course. If I may ask.
How did your Mother die?"
She looked up. "Mother died when she had scarlet
fever. She was laying in bed as she called me to her side. She smiled and
took me in her arms and whispered. "My beautiful daughter, I love you and
I want you to know Life is what you live, Love is what you have, Kindness
lives inside you and I live on in your heart." She died while I was in
her arms. Father always blamed me for being a girl. I was always crying
and was always soft on the inside. He still lives day by day with regret
of her dying and takes it out on me and Jason. I guess he's having a hard
time. Sir, I must be going. Thank you." Before Josiah could say a word
she left. He was amazed by how she was strong but yet weak. He smiled as
she ran out. Josiah finished working on the Church.
Rachael walked around town and didn't know
anyone. She was scared and was watching every move she made. She walked
into the telegraph office and ran into a young man. He was wearing a bowl
shaped hat and it was brown. He had started to grow a beard. He turned
into her and she was forced back. She was startled but not as much as he
was. "Hey, I'm sorry Miss. I don't normally run into people. Aren't you
that girl that Ezra brought in?" He asked.
"Ezra?" She had to think. "Yes that was me.
Excuse me".
"My name is JD Dunne? What's yours?" He asked
smiling.
"My name is Rachael Charleston. Sir, please
excuse me." she walked past JD and before he could say, anything she was
inside. He smiled as he walked back to the saloon.
She walked inside the telegraph office and
asked the young man inside if a letter had come. He got it for her and
she walked outside and read it. She sat down on the bench and began to
read fast.
Dear Rachael,
I will not becoming to see you. We are through. I have found your best
friend Elizabeth and we are getting married soon. I love her more then
you and she loves me. I hate to break up with you, but it will never work.
Good Bye, My love.
Lt. Kyle Miles
|
Rachael folded up the letter and started to
cry. Her heart was broken and her life was getting worse she didn't want
this. She wanted Kyle and to have a normal life. Everything was going down.
She wanted to die. She stood and wiped the tears from her eyes and walked
back to the hotel. She walked with her head hung down and thought about
what to do next. Her mined was blank as she ran into Ezra. She saw the
red coat and he turned. He was looking at her as she looked up. She met
with his eyes and looked away for a moment to collect her self then she
looked back at Ezra. "I'm sorry sir. I'm so sorry," she said.
Ezra smiled. "It's all right." She began to
walk again. Ezra noticed she had been crying and he ran in front of her.
"My dear, is there something that is troubling you?" He asked in his southern
drawl. She smiled and looked into his green eyes which sparkled when he
spoke.
"No sir. I'm sorry." She turned and walked
away. Ezra watched her walk into the hotel then he went his own way.
Rachael walked into her room and started
to cry. She went threw her trunk and then she took out her pictures and
letters from Kyle and her best friend and tore them up. They were no good
to her now. Only if she stayed with him. She thought of her mother and
Kyle and she couldn't control her rage and she began to beat her pillow.
It was the only way she knew how to deal with her anger. A knock came from
the door and she was immediately forced to quite crying and she answered
it.
Her father came in. "I'm leaving you here".
He said. "I have no use for you and you don't deserve to come with us".
She stood and began to beg. "Please let me
go with you. Don't leave me here." Her father hit her across the face and
that forced her to fall to the ground. She got up and started to walk out.
Her father threw her against the wall and she was starting to panic. She
had no way to protect her self now. Her father kept hitting her and as
they both yelled, Jason walked into the room. He started to see his father's
true side. Not able to do anything, Jason saw his father pick Rachael up
and throw her across the room. Rachael knew there was no help now. Or so
she thought.
Ezra, Vin and Buck went running into the hotel.
The town was crowded around the hotel. The three ran up the stairs and
ran into Rachael's room. They saw Rachael being thrown and the men stopped
him from doing any other harm to the girl. Rachael was out and her body
laid lifeless on the floor. Vin took Mr. Charleston out. Ezra and Buck
went to Rachael's side. Ezra looked at Buck and said. "Good lord,
look at this girl. Her whole body reveals excruciating pain," Buck nodded.
Her face was bruised and her arms were bleeding. Her neck was black and
blue. Her legs revealed old bruises and old scars.
Ezra bent down and picked her up. Buck and
Ezra walked out of the room and walked down stairs. They got out into the
street and were greeted by the town and the five other men. No one could
believe that the girl was still alive. Ezra walked over to the clinic and
everyone followed.
Ezra walked in to the clinic and laid her
down on the table. Nathan checked her over. Ezra waited outside and didn't
leave until Nathan came back out. Buck stayed with Ezra. Buck spoke to
Ezra and was worried that she was beaten up badly. "Ezra, you think she's
fine?" Ezra looked up at him. "I do not wish her harm but it may be for
her own good." Buck looked at Ezra.
"What?" he asked shocked.
"We don't know her side, we know her father's".
Buck scratched his head. "Ever since you let that Chinese girl go every
girl you see you treat badly".
Ezra shot up. "I certainly do not. I do not
want you implicate me of such comportment." He shot back. This time Buck
didn't understand what Ezra said.
Buck thought to himself. "Why is Ezra here
with this girl? All he wants has to be her money. He loves that Chinese
girl, He can't love this girl. So what's he planing to do?" Buck thought
of what Ezra might do and didn't want to have Ezra near her but he didn't
know what to do. He sat there and waited for Nathan as did Ezra.
A few hours went by and Ezra and Buck had
fallen asleep. Nathan walked out side and saw the two men. He knew he had
to wake them and so he did. He shook both of them and they woke and stood.
Buck spoke first. "How is she?" He asked. "Better. She's sleeping and I
need someone to stay with her".
"I'll do it," Buck said. Ezra looked at Buck.
"I'll do it," Ezra shot back. Nathan saw
Ezra's facial expressions.
"Buck, you go first. Ezra, you fill in for
Buck." Nathan walked away. Buck went through the door and shut it on Ezra.
Ezra opened it and sat down inside. He fell back asleep.
Buck walked into her room. He went to her
side and pulled up a chair. He saw how peaceful she looked and he had laugh.
"So this is what Ezra's after." Buck didn't really see her and when he
did he was completely taken away. This girl was an angel. She was beautiful
and besides her bruises, her beauty showed through. Buck sat back and watched
her in till he feel asleep. Rachael lie there sleeping.
It was 7:00 when Ezra woke up. He walked in
on Buck and relived him. Buck went out and slept one the table. Ezra was
wide awake and went to her side. He opened the curtain and the window and
he took off his jacket. He was still wearing his clothes from yesterday.
He sat beside her in the chair and looked around. He looked at her and
he had wipe the hair that was in her face. He brushed it away and she moved.
She smiled and reached her hand up to her face. She realized that there
was a hand that grabbed hers. She opened her eyes and looked into green
eyes that were looking into hers. She jumped and she could see that Ezra
was just as startled as she was. Ezra moved his hand back and sat on her
bed.
He asked. "My dear are you thirsty?" She nodded.
Ezra gave her a glass and she sat up. She looked at Ezra as she drank and
then gave the glass back to him. He sat it down on the table and turned
back to her. "I see you have rouse to this marvelous dawning." He watched
as she turned to the window. She didn't speak. Ezra cocked his head to
the right and thought of something to say. Rachael looked at him and smiled.
Ezra smiled back. "That's some improvement," she told her. She felt some
what better but she was ashamed. She didn't want this man her looking at
her face that she knew was bruised and her body ached. She held her head
as she felt dizzy and she sat back and looked up.
Ezra began to speak to her. "My dear you can
tell me what is the matter. I will not tell anyone, But I am troubled that
you are sorrowful." She looked at him and she was dying to kiss him. She
wanted to die that he was so perfect.
She began to speak to him. "Mister, I am sad
because of my appearance. I have never shown my scars or bruises to anyone.
I feel ashamed that you have to look at me like this." She looked down.
He raised her chin with his right hand. "My
dear you do not have to hide anything from me, To me you are the perfect
image of a woman," Rachael smiled. She wanted to laugh but new she shouldn't.
She sat back and looked up.
"Sir, is it possible to walk around?"
Ezra looked at her. "I guess but you are Nathan's
patient and I have no say".
Rachael sighed. "Oh." She looked at the door.
"If that is what you want, then I see no harm
in helping you out." Ezra stood and pulled Rachael out of bed. Rachael
put her arm over Ezra's back and he held her. She couldn't believe the
pain she was going through. She wanted to lay down. Ezra saw her facial
expressions and stopped.
"My dear, are you all right".
"I'm fine. I have to get outside." Ezra walked
with her again but slower. They got to the end of the hall way when they
met Buck. Buck was shocked.
"Ezra where are you taking her?" He asked.
"To get some fresh air." He smiled, revealing
his gold tooth. Buck stayed near them and helped Rachael as well. Ezra
didn't approve of it and he knew Buck knew. They got outside and she sat
down. She took a deep breath then held her stomach. She could feel every
bone in her body ache. She wanted to feel well. She watched the town people
run around to the stores and run errands like they always did. She smiled
and Buck sat by her.
"Hey you look better then yesterday," he said.
Rachael wiped her hair from her face.
"I don't feel it," she replied.
Buck laughed. "You have seen better days I
hope?" Rachael nodded yes.
Nathan, Vin, and Chris walked across the
street. Nathan saw Rachael and ran over to her. "You're supposed to be
in bed resting. Ezra, Buck, I told you to watch her." The two men looked
at him then one another.
"She said she wanted to greet the dawning
and I can't merely turn her down. She has interrogate for this small supplication
and I gave it to her," Ezra said. Rachael smiled as he stuck up for her.
"Thank you Ezra," she said. She was sitting
next to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Buck grew jealous and was trying to get one.
"I stayed with you all night," he said as he smiled and pointed to his
cheek. She gave him a kiss and he stuck out his tongue to Ezra. She laughed.
The guys laughed.
"Miss Charleston, you better get back inside".
Nathan said.
"All right," she said and she walked back
in. Ezra helped her up the stairs and into her room and he left.
He walked back down smiling and he greeted
his fellow friends. They were talking about what had happened yesterday
and that Judge Travis was on his way. Ezra walked in on the conversation.
"Gentlemen, are we going to trail him or not?" the guys looked at him.
"Yes, Ezra, we are," Vin informed him.
"I see, and when will this affliction take
place?" Ezra asked the men.
"Tomorrow. Rachael needs to be ready," Chris
said and they all looked at Ezra. Ezra was looking at them.
"Yes," he asked.
"We thought may be you could tell her, since
you know her," Buck said.
Ezra looked at Buck. "I don't know her. I
just discern that she needs a gentlemen to sojourn with her."
Buck smiled. "That's why you're the man for
the job." Buck patted him on the back and left for the saloon.
Chris walked up to Ezra and told him, "Go
tell her now so she's ready tomorrow." Then the men left. Ezra was waiting
and then he went inside. He walked up the stairs and ran into Nathan coming
out.
"Mr. Jackson, I have been inquired to verbalize
with her. May I." He pointed to the door. Nathan nodded. He walked in and
took off his hat and coat. He placed the hat on the back of the chair with
his coat and sat next to her. "My dear, I have been inquired to converse
with you about your father." Rachael sat up in her bed and looked at Ezra
uneasy. Ezra moved closer to her. "Now, now don't be afraid." He sat on
her bed and took her hands in his. He patted them. "Your father is going
to have a criterion tomorrow and I have been asked to discuss to you that
Mr. Travis, our Judge, is going to be here tomorrow. I am asking
you if you want me to be your advocate?" Rachael looked at him and her
eyes got big.
"How much?" She began to think of Nathan and
what he said. Ezra was impressed she caught on.
"Just a diminutive manifestation."
"Mr. Standish,
how much?" Ezra wanted her every penny he wanted her badly. He was thinking
of what to do. He wanted her and yet he wanted her money. He forced himself
to settle less then he wanted. "$50".
She smiled. "If you win, I'll give you $100".
He smiled and shook her hand. "Deal," he said she laughed. He laughed at
her and was taking away once again by her beauty. She was finally hooked
on him. Ezra and she talked about her past and Ezra knew he could win easily.
Night fell and Ezra went home. Rachael stayed
up and thought of what tomorrow would bring for her. Was it worth the risk?
She played it over and over. She didn't know how to deal with anything,
but Ezra made her feel much better. Rachael laid back and fell asleep.
Ezra walked into his room and laid on his
bed. He smiled at the way he was handling himself. Rachael was on his mind.
He had nothing else, except the Chinese girl. She was going to return some
time but he didn't know when. He know knew how it felt to be caught up
between two women. He was thinking that Rachael was right for him. He knew
that he liked her more because he forgot the Chinese girl's name and he
felt bad. He tossed and turned all night.
The next day was beginning. Rachael sent Nathan
to bring her black and blue dress back and her bag. She was getting ready
when Ezra walked in. Rachael hid behind the curtain but she was too late.
He saw her. She hurried to dress and she walked back out. Her face was
red and she was embarrassed. She sat on the bed and waited for Ezra to
get out the papers which he had carried in. He had a black coat on and
a gold vest. His tie was black and his eyes shined. He couldn't stop staring
at Rachael. He did blush himself when he saw her in the buff. They
were two responsible adults and it was an accident. But the thought went
through his head. He pushed it out and focused on the trail. Rachael was
sweating and her body began to shake.
Ezra sensed that she was scared and relieved
her. "My dear, you have evidence and if you are frightened you shouldn't
be. You are on a triumphant side."
"Mr. Standish..."
Ezra cut her off. "My dear call me Ezra".
He smiled she smiled back.
"All right ... Ezra. Have you talked to Jason?"
Ezra looked up.
"No, but my assurance is Mr. Tanner and Mr.
Larabee have," Rachael smiled.
"Thank god." Ezra smiled and he held out his
arm. "Shall we?" Rachael stood up and took his arm and he walked her to
the saloon.
They met Chris, Vin, Mary and Judge Travis.
Rachael turned to Ezra. "Ezra, I have to thank you, but to tell you the
truth, I need someone I can rely on. Ezra, I'm scared." Ezra took her in
his arms and held her. She cried and Mary walked up to her. Rachael was
on the verge of break down. Ezra held her tight and helped her take away
her tears. "Come on, my dear. You have to do what is suitable. I'll conduct
you every procedure of the way. I won't abandon you until you require me
to." The four people couldn't believe what Ezra had said. They now knew
he was in love.
Mary walked over to her. "Rachael, you'll
be fine. We're on your side".
Judge Travis stepped in. "Miss Charleston,
Ezra is the one I asked to take your case. He is the best. He will help
you".
Rachael dried her tears. "I'm terrified".
She said. Chris walked to her.
"Miss Charleston, don't be. We're here if
anything goes wrong." Chris said.
She nodded. "Let's get this manifestation
accomplished," Ezra smiled. "Come." They walked to the court room.
JD, Nathan, Josiah, and Buck greeted her.
She smiled. Ezra didn't let go of her. He kept his arm at her waist and
guided her to the table. Judge Travis walked to the front. The jury consisted
of Buck, JD, Nathan. Josiah and 8 other men. Rachael didn't know the eight
other men. Rachael kept a hold of Ezra. The only time she didn't was when
Ezra had to get out and walk around the room. The trail took 4 hours. Breaks
were often. Rachael was tired and didn't know what to do. After the trial,
she walked over to Buck and JD. They had asked her to walk over to them.
They stood by her side. Ezra had to talk to Mr. Charleston and his attorney.
Rachael stayed with them. She talk with them and watched everyone clear
out.
Rachael was starting to get dizzy. She was
talking with Buck when Ezra walked over to her. He placed his hand on her
right side. She knew it was him by the way he was gentle putting his arm
there. She turned and saw him smiling. "I have been enlightened, he will
have one year in jail and he has agreed to pay you $50,000." His eyes lit
up as he said the word. She grabbed her neck as if she was gasping for
air. She took a deep breath and then the seven men stood around her and
smiled. She finally talked to them. "Oh my god. I didn't know he had that
much?"
Chris told her. "You've won. Congratulations.".
She shook his hand and turned to Ezra and through her arms around him and
hugged him.
"EZRA!! You did it." She practically jumped
into his arms. He was holding his hat and her. He wrapped his arms around
her waist and brought her in. He smiled. The seven laughed.
"My dear, we did it." He drew back from her.
She smiled.
"Of course we did it. But I couldn't have
done it with out you. Thank you Ezra".
He smiled. "Your welcome, my dear." She was
dizzy again and then she felt sick. Then she grabbed Ezra and passed out.
Ezra grabbed her. The seven began to clear out the remaining crowd. Ezra
picked her up and Nathan lead the way back to the clinic. They took her
to the end of town and Ezra put her right back up in her room. Nathan checked
her and Ezra was forced to leave. As Nathan checked her, she threw up and
started having dry heaves. She began to pass out again but Nathan gave
her a drink of tea. She hated it, but she could lay down and that's what
she wanted. She fell asleep and Nathan left. Nathan walked down to the
waiting/operating room. Ezra stood.
"Ezra, she's resting, she still has heat exhaustion
and needs rest. Go home".
Ezra smiled. "Can I see her?" He asked.
"Not now. Let her rest." Ezra nodded and walked
out. He went to his room and took off his coat. He placed his hat at the
end of his bed and sat on the bed. He ran his fingers threw his hair and
rested his arms on his knees. He knew he couldn't sleep knowing Rachael
was sick. He felt bad and didn't know what to do. He removed his flask
from his coat and took two big swigs before he placed it back in his coat.
He laid down and started to remember how life
was when he was young. He laughed and smiled. He had a good childhood,
but as he got older things went worse. He had it all. Maude had provide
him with all he needed, but when he got older Maude made him learn how
to stay alive, well in her eyes. He always stole, cheated, and gambled.
It was what he loved doing. Nothing would make him happier then to do it.
Maude loved him and he knew it. He loved Maude, at times Maude would be
disappointed when Ezra wouldn't do what she asked. He wanted to do what
was right at times, but that made him confused. He loved doing things right
and that was why he joined the Magnificent Seven. That's what they were
called around there. He loved to help people. But he knew Gambling was
his trait and he would never give it up. He enjoyed the pleasure of cheating
and winning money, he was never ashamed in doing that. He had a gift and
it was god you gave it to him. He wasn't going to put it to waste. He finally
fell asleep and slipped off into sweet dreams.
The next morning Ezra woke up and crawled
out of bed. He grabbed his newly clean clothes from his dresser and closet
and headed down to the bathes in his worn clothes he slept in. He carried
his new clothes and walked into the bath house. Buck was taking a bath
and saw Ezra. "Ezra I see your showing," Ezra smiled.
"Of course, Mr. Wilmington, I like to stay
legible." Ezra took off his clothes and got into a hot bath tub. Ezra smiled
as he hit the hot water. He felt so dirty and unclean, it made him sick.
He grabbed the soap and washed. Buck got out and put on his clothes then
left. Ezra was all alone. Ezra drew the curtain so no one knew he was in
there. Ezra bathed for an hour before he got out.
Rachael woke up and felt better. She was going
through her bag and looking at all her stuff. She with drew her brush and
combed her hair. She knew she would soon have to take a bath. She wanted
to wait until someone came so she could have Mary take her. She laid back
in her bed and smiled. She was getting a fortune and she wanted it all.
Her father was a wealthy man but he was wealthier then she thought. She
waited until Nathan came up. Which wasn't long. Nathan knocked on her door
then entered. "I see you are awake. How are you feeling?" He asked.
"Very good, do you know if Mary is in?" She
asked.
"She won't be back until tomorrow is there
something I can do?"
Rachael blushed. "I'll wait until tomorrow.
Nathan, do you think I can go outside and to the church?" She asked. Nathan
looked at her.
"I would wait until two more days you should
be better. Don't push it to far or you might be in bed longer then you
thought," Rachael nodded.
"OK." She laid back down and looked out the
window. The sky was blue and the sun was bright. Clouds rolled by and the
wind blew in her room. She felt so good, better then she ever felt. She
wanted this day to stay this way forever. She pulled out her music from
her bag and began to read it.
Ezra was on his way to check on Rachael.
He was wearing a green coat and a black vest. His hat was in his hands
as he strolled up to the clinic. He greeted Nathan as he came out. Nathan
smiled and stopped him. "Ezra, she can see you now. She's awake and feeling
much better then she felt yesterday".
Ezra nodded and smiled. "That's momentous
to hear Mr. Jackson." Ezra walked into the clinic. He walked up the stairs
and knocked on the door.
Rachael hid her music and threw he bag down
and looked at the door. "Come in," she said. The door opened and Ezra walked
in.
"My dear you look incomparable." He smiled
and was happy to see she was smiling. Rachael moved over so Ezra could
sit down with her on the bed.
"Here," she said as he sat down. "So Mr. Standish,
what is it that you have come to tell me about today?" She asked happily.
"My dear, I have come to see how you are,
I was concerned when you fell yesterday and I am very delighted to see
you feeling rather well." His smile made her melt.
She smiled and replied. "I'm am very happy
to see you today, how's the town?" Ezra carefully watched her as she talked
with him, he knew right away that she liked him.
He looked into her eyes and said "Will you
go with me on a picnic this Saturday?" He asked.
Rachael smiled. "I would be delighted," she
told him. Ezra took her hand and kissed. "I will be back tomorrow to see
you, Mr. Larabee wants me to depart and check on manifestations in the
next town, I should be back tomorrow night or the proximate day, Until
then." He walked out and left Rachael happy.
Two days went by and it was Friday. Rachael
was worried but yet not because she was with Vin and Buck most of the day.
Mary and her went to the bath house that morning and went to her hotel
room and got her changed into her dress and she curled her hair and put
on make up. She had on a necklace that her mother had given her and she
was sitting with the six men and Mary outside of the saloon. "Rachael,
I must say you look beautiful in this light," Buck smiled.
Rachael laughed. "Thank you Mr. Wilmington".
She replied.
"Call me Buck," he said. "All right, Buck,
thank you." Everyone laughed. Chris stood when he saw Ezra ride in. Rachael
didn't see and she was talking with JD when Ezra walked up to her.
Ezra stood behind her and waited for her to
stand. JD told her "Rachael, would you stand please." Rachael looked at
him and was confused. She did what he asked and she turned around and Ezra
stood right there. Rachael was happy. She threw her arms around him and
hugged him. He hugged her back. Everyone knew Ezra and Rachael had a thing
for each other right then and there.
"Ezra I've missed you, god I've missed you".
Ezra held her tight.
"My dear, I have missed you as well. The nights
were hell for me." Rachael withdrew and smiled.
"Ezra, these gentlemen have made my stay here
enjoyable and well, I have given them something and I have something for
you." Rachael reached down in her garter and took out an envelope. She
gave it to Ezra and he opened it. He took out a letter and opened that.
There was $500 for him. Ezra's poker face couldn't hide the surprise he
showed.
He smiled and said. "Thank you but you didn't
have to. I mean I really could use it".
Rachael laughed. "Ezra, I know you wanted
it, I'm not ashamed to give it away. You guys have made me very happy and
that's something I never had. I had it when I was younger but not since
I lived with my father and brother." Everyone looked at her. "I just wanted
to thank you." Rachael sat up against the rail and looked back at the street.
Everyone began to talk about a dance coming up. Ezra couldn't say anything
and that surprised him. He looked at Rachael and his breath was taken away.
Here she was the one he cared for more then anything looking at the street
and looking beautiful. He loved the way her hair was falling around her
neck and the way her red velvet dress revealed the colors upon her face.
Her body was slender and she was what he always dreamed of. He walked to
her and put her arm around her waist.
She looked at him. She smiled. "Ezra this
is perfect I want to live here forever".
Ezra smiled. "I want you to".
Rachael turned to him. "You... you want me
to?" She wasn't sure why she doubt him. She wanted to know why he wanted
her to. "Why Ezra?" Ezra looked down and then back up.
"Because I think you would be great here.
You are what the town needs".
Mary walked up. "Ezra's right. You're what
the town needs."
Rachael laughed. "I can't do anything".
Mary looked at her. "We know you sing." Rachael's
mouth dropped.
"What?"
Ezra held her tighter. "I heard you my dear".
Ezra said.
"When?" She asked.
"Rachael, are you afraid to sing?" Mary asked.
"No, but it's something I'm not proud of".
Ezra cocked his head to the side. "Why?"
"Because Ezra." Mary and Ezra knew she didn't
want to talk and they didn't push her. Mary looked at Ezra.
"Are you going to the Sweethearts dance
Ezra?" Mary asked.
Ezra smiled. "I don't know just yet".
Rachael told her. "I will be".
Ezra turned to her. "Then I will go," he said.
Mary smiled. "Great."
Rachael walked away and headed for the church.
She walked in and sat down in front of the church. She smiled and then
prayed. Ezra walked in and stayed his distance until she was done. She
smiled and stood up and started to talk. "Momma, I know you can here me.
I still miss you. Mamma, Dad's in jail. I know you don't want him to be,
Oh mamma what can I do? I had to, I know you're disappointed but the way
he treated you I couldn't bear it. I have some good news, momma, I found
a gentlemen. He's kind and he's good to me. Unlike Kyle. I know you wanted
me to marry him but mamma, I couldn't. He's marrying Elizabeth. Mamma,
he's marrying my best friend. I can't bear it I just can't." she paused
as tears began to pour she held her face and then looked back up. "Mamma
I love you and I love Father but I have to tell you. I think I love Ezra.
Mamma, Ezra's the one who put father in jail and well, he's helped me deal
with my pain and well, he makes me happy. That's what I want to be happy.
You all ways said happiness finds a cure and well, it has. Mamma, I don't
know when I'll talk with you again but for now I love you." Rachael wiped
her tears and stood for a moment.
She smiled and walked over to the window she
saw her reflection and she wiped the tears away again and she kept smiling.
Ezra dropped his hat and knew she knew some one was there. She turned and
looked at him. "Ezra what are you doing here?" She asked.
Ezra had to tell her. "My dear I heard your
conversation and I didn't mean to. I wish to talk to you," Rachael nodded.
"But first." He walked towards her.
"What?" She asked.
"But first are you all right?" Rachael smiled.
"Yes Ezra I am." Ezra put down his coat and
walked up to her and put his arms around her waist. She looked into his
eyes and then away. Ezra took his right hand and brought her face back
into meet his.
"My dear, I know." Rachael couldn't bear it.
She laid her head into his chest and began to cry.
"Ezra I miss her. I miss her so much it hurts".
Ezra was glad she was opening up to him. He pulled back and brought her
face to meet his again.
"My dear I wish I could make you feel preferred,
but the truth is I don't know how. I'm so mournful".
She smiled. "Ezra, you are the first person
to know. Plus you make me feel better." She pulled away and went to the
window and wiped her face. She smiled and turned back. "So what do I wear
to this dance?" She asked.
Ezra smiled. "What you're wearing now".
Rachael nodded. "That's good to here." Ezra
brought her in close to him once again. He wanted to kiss her. If he didn't
he would die of anxiousness. He brought her face to meet his again and
kissed her hard on the mouth. She was startled and she was in shock. He
wrapped his right arm around her waist and his left behind her head. She
wrapped her arms around his neck. This felt so right to Ezra. He wanted
this day to last forever but he knew it wouldn't. Rachael felt so alive
and she knew her self that this was right. Ezra pulled away and he was
breathing hard as was Rachael. Ezra smiled.
"I think we should sit," Rachael smiled. "Good
idea," she said. Rachael and Ezra sat down and talked about the dance that
was tomorrow.
Josiah and JD walked into the church and
saw Rachael and Ezra talking. Josiah cleared his throat and walked up to
them. "There you two are?" He said.
Ezra and Rachael stood. "Yes," Ezra said.
"We have to go to Mark's. He wants us to watch
over his land tonight. Mary's going so if Rachael wants, she is glad to
come. Mrs. Peters would be delighted to have company." Ezra and Josiah
looked at Rachael.
"Sure," she said excitedly.
The nine met out front of the saloon and
then headed towards town. Rachael rode beside Ezra all the way there. As
they got to the Peters, they noticed that the horses were gone. Chris knew
something was wrong. They rode up and they were greeted by the Peters.
Mark walked up to Chris. "Glad your here," he said.
"What happened?" Chris asked.
"They took the horses and the two milking
cows".
Chris nodded. "Well look out. Mary, Rachael
you stay here. the rest lets split up and surround this place." They nodded
and headed off to the woods that surround the place.
Rachael and Mary got off their horses and
tied them up and walked inside. "Mary, it so good to see you," Kate said.
Mary smiled. "Kate, this is Rachael Charleston".
Rachael smiled. "Hi." Kate hugged her.
"Welcome, Rachael. Call me Kate." Rachael
observed her. She was as old as Mary if not younger. Rachael saw two boys
standing at the door way of the living room. Kate introduced Rachael. "Boys,
this is Rachael Charleston." They walked up to her. They were tall and
built. Rachael knew the one was older then her the other one was younger
but not by much. "Rachael, this is Matthew and Charlie".
The two boys smiled and shook her hand. "Hi".
She said.
"Hi," the two boys said. She was shocked they
had deep voices.
"Sit, you two, sit." Kate pulled out two chairs
at the dinner table and they sat.
Rachael looked at Mary. "She's nice," Rachael
said.
"I know," Mary said. The two boys sat next
to Rachael. She started thinking "god I want Ezra." She started to feel
scared and then she finally over came it. Two hours went by and no word
form any of the men. Rachael and Mary started to worry. Night was starting
to fall and it drove Rachael crazy.
She paced back and forth and Mr. Peters laughed.
"Girl you going to put a whole in the floor you keep doing that." They
all laughed.
"I'm sorry." Rachael sat down.
"Don't worry I'm picking with ya," Rachael
smiled. "Where you from?" He asked. "I'm from Alabama," she said.
"I see. How's the blacks?" Rachael looked
up.
"We're from Pennsylvania".
Rachael about died.
"I was in the war and it was hell".
Rachael became scared. "Sir, I wish not to
discuss the war with you. I was not born then and I do not want to discuss
it period." He smiled.
"I like you. Quiet but yet stern. Matt, you
break up with that girl?" Rachael eyes grew big as well as Mary's.
"Yes Pa".
Mary stepped in. "Rachael is seeing someone
right now".
"Oh who?" Rachael looked at Mary.
She mouthed the words. "Ezra and I aren't".
Mary picked it up.
"One of the seven." Rachael looked back at
Mark.
"Which one?" He asked rudely.
"The one in the green coat," she said.
"That fancy talkin' fella?" He asked.
"That one," Mary said.
Rachael was thinking. "Oh my god I'm so dead.
If Ezra finds out he'll hate me." Rachael knew that she had to get out
now. Shots rang out and Mary and Rachael hit the floor. Bullets pierced
the windows and the walls.
Mary and Rachael huddled by the door. The three men got their shot guns
and started shooting back. Rachael and Mary went to get two guns. They
found them and joined the three men. They shot back and saw 20 men ride
in. Rachael saw seven guns fire from two directions and knew it was the
seven. She saw the 20 men fall to 10 and kept dropping. Soon there was
none. Rachael and Mary walked out with two guns in each hand. The Peters
walked out. The seven men rode down and they looked all around. One was
still alive he raised his gun and aimed for Mary. Rachael shot and the
man dropped. She threw the gun down and Mary walked over to her. "Thanks".
She said.
"You're welcome." Ezra walked over to Rachael
and hugged her. She hugged him back.
"You all right?" He asked.
"I'm fine," she replied back.
"Let's go home," Chris said.
Mark shook Chris's hand and thanked him. Then
Mark turned to Ezra and Rachael. "Hey, Mister. You got a fine girl".
Rachael smiled. Ezra looked at him. "I know".
He said and they rode away.
TWO
They rode into town and headed for their rooms.
Chris walked Mary to her home and Mary gave Chris a quick kiss. Vin, Buck,
and JD headed for the saloon. Nathan and Josiah headed to their rooms.
Ezra walked Rachael to her hotel room. Ezra was talking with her. "I see
my dear you know how to manage a gun?" He said.
Rachael smiled. "I have been taught by my
brother when I was young. I do remorse it, because I don't like to familiarize
my self with them", she told him.
Ezra nodded. "I manipulate them for justification
as you already know. You could say that I am gratified to acquire them".
He turned to Rachael. "My dear. What is it that you do besides sing?"
Rachael stopped. "Ezra, I don't sing. I have
been a cook and a house maid".
Ezra's mouth wanted to drop. "You mean your
father had you captive?" He asked.
Rachael turned. "That's why I lived. Ezra".
Ezra couldn't find anything to say. He had no idea she was a slave.
"You have never vocalized before?", he asked.
Rachael smiled. "I have never," she laughed.
"Ezra it's something I just do for fun." She began to walk and he followed.
"Would you mined vocalizing now?" Rachael
stopped.
"When we get inside my room I will just for
you." She smiled. They walked into the hotel and walked up the stairs.
They went to her room. They walked in and Ezra shut the door behind her.
She smiled and sat down. She lit up the candles that were around her room
and sat on the bed. She pulled out one particular piece of music and put
the rest away. Ezra took off his green jacket and placed his jacket and
hat on the chair that was next to the bed. Then he sat down next to her
and she laughed. "I have never sang in front of anyone before".
Ezra smiled. "I would have thought you had".
Ezra smiled and tried to easy her fears. She looked down at her music.
"This one is 'White Winter'. It's one of my
favorites since I was 12, I guess. Here it goes. White river covered
in white snow, White Mountain that never shows how the snow falls upon
it's top. White snow, white river, oh it is a white winter. The trees are
bear and they are covered from head to toe in the white snow. White flakes
falling from the sky, that twinkles in your eye. White snow, White snow
it won't stop snowing from my head to my toes. White snow, White snow.
I love to see it fall, but the best part of the white winter is I'm in
your arms. White snow, White river, oh it's a white winter.
That's most of it. I don't remember the rest."
Ezra lifted her head and she saw him smiling.
"You're beautiful." He bent down and kissed her. She kissed him back. That
night Ezra stayed with her. That was the first night he stayed with a girl.
The next morning Nathan, Josiah, Buck, Vin,
Chris, JD, and Mary met at the church and began to decorate. It was noon
and the town was busy. Chris and Vin were putting up signs. Mary and JD
were putting up lights. Josiah, Buck and Nathan were painting the ceilings
white. Everyone was doing something. Chris walked over to Mary. "Where's
Rachael?", he asked.
"I don't know. I guess still sleeping.
She never sleeps this long. I'll go find her." Chris headed for the hotel.
Buck walked over to Mary. "Where's he going?"
He pointed to Chris.
"To find Rachael," Mary told him.
Buck laughed. " I bet you she's not alone".
Buck said.
Mary laughed. "Buck I doubt that," she said.
They went back to work.
Chris walked up the stairs and knocked on
her door. "No answer." Then Chris kicked the door. Only to his surprise,
he saw Ezra and her in bed. Ezra had his gun pulled. Chris tipped his hat
and left. He shut the door and went back down stairs and headed for the
church. Ezra got out of bed and dressed. Rachael hurried and Ezra and her
ran down the hall way and the stairs. Dressed and all.
Chris walked into the church and picked up
a paint brush and helped Josiah. Mary and Buck walked over to him. "Something
wrong Chris?" Buck asked.
Chris turned. "No".
Mary asked. "You find her?"
Chris answered. "Yes".
Buck tipped his hat back and slid back on.
"Chris, did you see something more than just her?" Buck asked. Chris didn't
reply. "Chris, is she all right?" Chris nodded.
Buck and Mary were getting mad. Chris wouldn't
tell them. Ezra and Rachael ran threw the door. "Ask them," Chris said.
They all looked at the two. Ezra and Rachael stood hand in hand and saw
Chris.
Ezra and Rachael ran over to him. "What were
you thinking? Mr. Larabee?" Ezra asked. Chris looked at Ezra.
"How was I to know you two were sleeping together.
When I knocked there was no answer and I kicked the door," Chris said.
"Mr. Larabee, I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone
would come looking for me," Rachael apologized.
"Rachael, I'm sorry I busted in on you like
that," Chris said. Ezra was mad. Ezra walked off and Rachael followed him.
Buck walked up to Chris. "So you saw more
then you ever seen before, From her," Buck smiled.
Chris laughed. "I feel like an ass", he said.
Buck smiled. "So?" Buck eyes were starving
for something. "Do tell," Buck said. Chris laughed and told Buck.
Ezra stopped at the saloon and Rachael caught
up with him. "Ezra what is the matter?" She asked.
He turned. "I do not appreciate Mr. Larabee
charging in on us like that. It is not any of his interest what we do in
our additional duration".
Rachael laughed. "Ezra he didn't mean it,
and besides I think what he saw he will never do it again."
Ezra laughed. "I concede with you." He kissed
her.
"I must get back I have to help them," she
said.
"All right", he said and he went into the
saloon and she went back to the church.
She walked in and they looked at her. "Can
I help?" She asked.
Mary walked up to her. "We're painting now.
Here." She tossed her a paint brush and she started to paint.
Ezra went into the saloon and sat down. He
was greeted by four men who wanted to play poker. They all seated and Ezra
shuffled the cards and passed them around. The four men waited for him.
Ezra passed the cards out and played the first game. The pot was worth
$100. Ezra couldn't believe it. "Call," Ezra said. The men did. "Well,
looks like I win", Ezra said.
"I see," one of the men said. They played
again. Ezra won again. One of the men started getting mad. Ezra could see
that this man was getting fed up. After the third hand was dealt the man
with drew his gun. He was too slow, Ezra had his derringer already out.
The rest of the men jumped back form the table and with drew. Ezra had
two bullets and the men 24 bullets. Ezra was nervous but he didn't show
it. The six men were right there with Ezra.
"I think we have more bullets then you", JD
said. The four men walked out of the saloon. Ezra put his derringer back
in his sleeve and raked in his money. He straightened it out and Stacked
it. The he put it inside his boot. he turned to the men. "I have to say
gentlemen that your timing was impeccable," Ezra smiled.
The men smiled. "Ezra, you need to be careful,
we can't always be there to back you up," Vin told him.
Ezra nodded. "I cognize".
JD looked at Buck. "It means I know," Buck
told JD. The seven men sat down with Ezra and ordered a beer.
Mary and Rachael were cleaning up the mess
in the church. Mary asked Rachael. "Do you love Ezra?"
Rachael turned to her. "Why?", she asked.
"Oh I just wondered. You two make a great
couple".
Rachael smiled. "We do?"
"Yeah. I've seen Ezra as happy as I ever seen
him in a long time. Well, actually never." Rachael turned to her.
"Why is he happy now? I mean, why wasn't he
before?" she asked.
Mary walked over to her. "I don't know. He
has always been real closed. He never tells us anything what wrong or what's
on his mind." Rachael looked at her and looked away. Mary smiled. "Hey,
let's get this cleaned up and we'll go over to your room. Ezra told me
you don't know what to wear," Mary smiled.
Rachael laughed. "Would you?"
Mary grabbed her hand. "Let's go now."
"OK." They went running out of the church
and went to the hotel.
They got to her room and they went to the
closet. "Here's everything," Rachael told her.
"Wow, you have a lot," Mary said. "I know".
Rachael said. Mary saw one that caught her eye. She pulled it out. It was
blue. She pulled it out and looked at Rachael. "What about this one?" Mary
asked.
Rachael nodded no. "Mary if you want you can
wear it tonight".
Mary smiled. "Thank you." Mary looked again
and found a peach dress. She pulled it out. Rachael smiled. "I like that
one," Mary smiled.
"It's so you", Rachael laughed. "There's a
story with that one. Sit here and I'll tell you." Mary sat down next to
Rachael. "My Aunt gave me that to wear to a dance. I was 16 and it was
so funny. I walked in and the boys danced with me and I wouldn't dance
with them because I didn't know them." Mary laughed. "My Aunt said, 'You
need to dance. That's what this is.' I said no. Well she found this one
guy. Kyle. He was so nice and he danced with me. Well, Jason, my brother,
hated him. Couldn't stand him. So Jason hit him. It was a mess. Everyone
was fighting. After the dance Jason took me home and it was so funny to
him that he had to pull over the carriage and stop laughing. I asked him
what was so funny. He said. "My sister can attract a crowd and I can't
attract a girl," he laughed. Jason and I after that grew apart," Mary laughed.
"It's a story but a weird one to me," Rachael
added.
Mary looked at her. "What do you mean?" Rachael
looked at Mary.
"It's just well if you knew all my life you
would see. I don't have time to tell you".
Mary nodded. "Wear this one", she said.
Rachael nodded,"All right." They walked back
to the church and finished cleaning.
Two hours went by and the seven man and the
two woman were putting up two tables and chairs. They put the chairs around
the church and then they went home to change. It was about time. Only an
hour was still left to get dress and get back down their. Josiah, Nathan,
Chris, and Mary were going to start while the rest came later, They were
going to stay after and help clean up.
Rachael was up in her room and she was finishing
putting her hair up. She pulled out a box and saw a ring and placed it
on her right middle finger. It was gold and a green emerald was in the
middle. Around it had diamonds and she smiled as she admired it. She put
the box back in the drawer and looked at her dress. It laid on the bed
and she sat next to it. She looked at it. It was so long since she actually
looked at her stuff. The ring, the dress and everything she owned. She
stared at the dress. The top was velvet it was long sleeved and it went
up along her neck and drooped down the front. It revealed her chest. The
body part was beaded in line. Little beads were in columns. the bottom
was fleece and it had a cut that went to her thigh. She stepped in to it
and sipped the back. She turned to the mirror and saw her self. She laughed.
"I have grown. But it still fits as tight as it always did." She turned
and it fanned out. her arms were opened and she laughed. "I feel like a
little kid." She stopped and sat down. She remembered her mother.
"Momma please let me go. I have to, momma,
my friends are going."
"No Rachael Marie, I cant' let you your
father would kill me".
"Momma please".
She looked at her daughter. Tears filled
her eyes. "I can't let you, I want to let you, Rachael I want to let you
go to that dance, But your father wants us to stay here while he goes out
of town".
Tears began to pour. "Momma what's wrong,
Where's Father?" Rachael walked away.
She knew where her father was. She was
only 6 and she knew her father was with Marie, his new girlfriend. Rachael
curled up in her room and started crying. Her dog Milly sat with her. She
knew she wanted to go to that dance.
Her mother walked over to her. "Rachael
I have some sad news to tell you".
"Yes Momma?" The little girl asked.
"Rachael, I'm not going to be around much
longer".
"Why? Momma" The girl began to cry.
"Rachael, I'm dying and I want you to help
Jason and your Father out. Rachael, you're my pride and joy."
Knock, Knock, Rachael looked up and the door. "Just a minute." Rachael
looked at her self in the mirror and wiped a tear that had formed in her
eye. She smiled and ran to the door.
She opened it. It was Ezra. "Ezra I'm so glad
to see you".
Ezra smiled,"We saw each other just an hour
ago. But it pains me to be away from you just a second. You look sumptuous
my dear".
Rachael blushed. "You look dignified Ezra.
I like your red jacket".
Ezra smiled. "Shall we, my dear?" he asked
her.
"We shall," she said and they laughed. They
walked down the hotel stairs and out the door to the church.
Mary and Chris were already dancing as every
one came in. Josiah and Nathan were collecting money. Vin and a girl were
dancing away as Buck and Molly came up to them. Vin stopped and asked Vin
if they would switch, they did. JD was dancing with Casey. "Casey, you
look great", he told her.
She smiled. "JD you look great your self".
She smiled and they laughed.
"Casey, would you like to go out side and
talk?"
"Sure JD." They walked out side.
Chris and Mary were over by the drinks. "Great
music," Mary said.
"Yeah, who are these guys?" He asked her.
"There from Red River, a town 5 miles from
here." They went back dancing.
The church was full and everyone was having
a good time. The song was fast and everyone was on the dance floor. No
one was sitting. Rachael and Ezra walked up to the church steps and Ezra
turned to Rachael. "I almost forgot," he said. He pulled out a bag from
his coat pocket. Rachael watched him reveal a necklace that was in a ball.
Ezra picked one end and pulled it out off his left hand.
"Ezra it's beautiful." Ezra placed it on her
neck. It was a diamond on a gold chain. It was a circle. Rachael kissed
him on the check. "Thank you Ezra," she said excitedly.
JD and Casey walked up to them. "Hey Ezra,
hey Rachael".
"Hi JD," Rachael said.
"Hi Rachael you look great," Casey said.
"Thank you Casey".
"Ezra we'll se you inside," JD said and they
walked in.
Ezra and Rachael met Josiah and Nathan. "Hey
Ezra, late as usual," Nathan said.
"Funny Mr. Jackson".
"Have fun you two," Josiah said and the walked
in. It was full. They looked around. Ezra saw Buck and Chris and he escorted
Rachael over to them.
"Ezra I see you made it," Buck said. He looked
at Rachael and walked over to her. "Rachael you will save me a dance won't
you. And might I add you look splendid this evening," Buck smiled.
"I can't promise you anything, You might have
to ask Ezra," Ezra smiled.
Buck laughed. "Well Ez. What ya say one dance?"
Buck asked.
"Well I don't know Mr. Wilmington you might
swindle her away." He smiled.
Buck's hands were held together. "Please".
Buck begged.
"All right, one," Ezra told him.
"Yes," Buck said. Vin and Chris smiled.
Vin walked up to her. "Miss Charleston, you
look mighty pretty this evening".
"Thank you Mr. Tanner. You look great".
"Shoot. Call me Vin".
"All right Vin," Vin smiled.
Mary walked up to Rachael. "See I told you
would look great." Mary smiled.
"Thank you Mary," Rachael said.
A slow song started and Ezra looked at Rachael.
"My dear, Buck, may dance with you? I have some business I must attend
to and I will be back." He kissed her hand and turned to Buck. "She's all
yours," he said as Buck lead her away he kept an eye on them. Ezra walked
over to Josiah and Nathan and began to talk to them.
Buck held Rachael close and Rachael became
scared. She tried to stay her distances but couldn't. The song was slow
and to her it felt like her life was getting longer. Buck started to talk
to her. "Ezra really likes you," Buck said.
"I really like Ezra, Buck," Rachael told him.
"Rachael what made you like him?" Buck was
dying to know.
"Well I don't know. It just happened. I guess
it was love at first sight," Rachael told him.
"That can happen. I fall for a lot of girls,
love at first sight." Buck laughed.
"Buck you fall for anyone who says Hi," Rachael
laughed.
"Ha Ha Ha. Funny," Buck said. The song finally
ended. Rachael sat down and Mary sat with her. Rachael looked for Ezra.
"Where is he?" Rachael asked Mary.
"He's talking with Josiah," Mary told her.
The music stopped and every one's attention was at Josiah.
"Ladies and Gentlemen I have been asked to
call upon Rachael Charleston to come up here and sing." Rachael's eyes
grew big and she started to get sick.
"Oh god," she said. Mary and Vin took her
up to the stage and she faced the crowd and turned around and took a deep
breath.
"You fellas know 'Stars Fell Upon the Cowboy's
Sweetheart'?" The band members nodded and the ballad began. Rachael was
singing and she saw Ezra in the back with Vin and Chris. He was watching
her. She smiled and started to relax. She ended and was asked to sing another.
She did.
Songs went by and she finally got off the
stage and ran to Ezra. "They liked me Ezra." She wrapped her arms around
him.
He smiled. "My Dear I knew they would." He
kissed her. She was so happy. Things were going her way after all. A fast
song took place and everyone danced fast. Ezra, Rachael, Mary and Chris
were all out there as well. They were having fun. They song ended and a
slow song took place. Rachael didn't see Ezra. She looked around and he
walked up to her. "I had to put my hat down." He smiled. He held her in
his arms and he felt alive. She felt so happy. Ezra smiled and looked down
at her. "My dear, this is a beautiful song, do you know what it is?"
Rachael smiled. "My mom use to sing this,
'The Cowboy's Eyes and the Girl's Heart'. It's a weird title but it was
my mom's favorite song".
Ezra smiled and looked into her eyes. "Your
Mother was extraordinary, wasn't she, my dear?" Ezra asked.
"Yes Ezra, she was." Rachael looked back into
Ezra's eyes. Ezra bent down and kissed her. Rachael responded back. Ezra
looked at her.
"Rachael do you want to bequeath this entertainment?"
He asked.
Rachael looked around. "Why?" She asked him.
"Because my dear I have something else for us ." His emerald eyes sparkled
with plans. Rachael smiled and leaned back in his arms, just enough to
look directly in his eyes.
"I see Mr. Standish and what might that be?"
Her eyes sparkled with questions.
"You'll have to trust me".
"I see. If we must," she said. Ezra took her
hand and headed for the door. Chris and Mary stopped them.
"Where you going Ezra?" Chris asked.
"Mr. Larabee we have other plans tonight and
they can be no longer desired".
Mary smiled. "Chris let them go," Chris smiled.
"Only if I can dance with her?" Ezra smiled
and looked at Rachael. Rachael looked at Ezra.
"It's up to her?" Ezra said.
"All right. Mr. Larabee." Rachael took him
out to the dance floor. They danced and Mary and Ezra talked.
"She really likes you Ezra," Mary said.
"I indeed have affection for her as well".
Mary and Ezra smiled.
"Any plans in the future for you two?" Mary
asked.
"We have not discussed that matter yet but
I wish to tonight." Ezra looked at his watch.
"Ezra what's planned?" Mary asked. Ezra turned.
"You will find out tomorrow, We must be leaving."
Ezra got up and got Rachael and they walked out.
They got to the street and Ezra put his arm
around her waist. He held her tight and they walked slowly to the hotel.
The town was quite and the moon and stars were shinning bright. Rachael
took a deep breath and smiled. "Ezra this is great, I have never had this
much fun since I was younger," Ezra smiled.
"I'm gratified to see you are fortunate as
well as am I." He smiled.
"So Ezra what do you have planned?" Ezra laughed.
"My dear, you'll soon observe, I know you'll
like it".
Ezra and Rachael walked up the stairs and
into her room. It was black and she couldn't see anything. Ezra turned
the light on and Rachael smiled and started to cry. Set in front of her
was a candle light dinner. It was set for two. A bottle of wine was in
a bucket and the food was steak. Rachael laughed as she saw little letter
for her and read "My dear." She tried to wipe the tears of joy away. She
turned to Ezra and hugged him. "Ezra, thank you".
Ezra sat her down and kissed her forehead.
"It's all I can do for a exquisite woman like you." Ezra placed his hat
on the bed and he took off his coat and put it on the back of his chair
and sat down. They ate and then they sat on the bed and talked for hours.
Rachael and Ezra were expressing their feelings and there past. Rachael
and Ezra were made for each other. Ezra stayed the night again.
10:00 rolled around and Ezra awoke. He looked
at Rachael who was laying across his chest and she was out. Ezra smiled
and ran his fingers threw her hair. She stirred and woke up. her blue eyes
looked into his green ones. Ezra smiled. "Morning my dear".
"Morning Ezra." Rachael sat up and looked
at him. Ezra sat up too.
"Ezra, what time is it?" She asked.
"It's 10:00, my dear. why?"
"Oh no I told Mary I would help her today.
I gotta get going." Rachael got out of bed and went to her closet she grabbed
a purple dress and changed. She curled her hair and put it up. She picked
her dress from last night of the floor and threw it in her closet and went
over to Ezra. She kissed him and started to run. Ezra caught her arm and
that caused her to fall on the bed. Ezra took her in one arm and brought
her to his lap. Her bent her to his left side and kissed her.
"My dear, Mary knows. I asked her assistance
me in planning this".
Rachael smiled and she blushed. "I'm sorry
Ezra".
Ezra laughed. "Come let's meet the new day.
But first where's my shirt?" Rachael looked over by the dresser and gave
it to him and waited for him outside her room. They walked down stairs
and headed for the saloon.
Vin, Buck, JD, Chris, Mary, Nathan, and Josiah
were sitting around the table laughing and talking about what to do that
day.
"So Chris, do you want Vin and me to ride
out to greet the stage?" JD asked.
"You might as well," Chris said. Ezra and
Rachael came in as JD asked the question.
"Can I go?" Rachael asked. Everyone was surprised
that she walked in.
"It's no job for a lady," JD said. Ezra laughed.
"Mr. Dunne. She's no lady I can assure you".
Everyone laughed.
"What are you saying Ezra"? Rachael asked.
Ezra smiled. "Nothing", he said.
"Mr. Tanner, Mr. Dunne, we will be glad to
greet the stage," Ezra said.
Vin and JD nodded. "O.K.," Vin said and they
sat back down. Rachael and Ezra headed for the livery.
Rachael pulled her horse out and waited for
Ezra. Ezra walked out with his and turned to Rachael. "Are you sure you
want to do this?" He asked.
"Of course Ezra. I need to get out. Explore
have fun," she laughed. Ezra smiled and put his arm around her waist and
brought her close to him. He smiled and then he bent down to kiss her.
He covered her mouth with his and forced hers opened. This was the first
time he caught her off guard. She kissed him back and then went to her
horse. Ezra thought that there was something wrong. He got on his and they
rode out of town side by side. Buck and JD got on their horses and decided
to go with Rachael and Ezra. They met up with them at the end of town.
Ezra and Rachael greeted them and they headed out.
They met the stage and it was stopped by
a lake. It was starting to be a habit and it was dangerous. The four got
off and walked over to Mac. Mac sat down exhausted. He looked up and Ezra.
"Mr. Standish, these days are getting hotter and I'm getting older. We
had to stop." Ezra patted the man on the shoulder.
"There, There I understand greatly, but we
are hired to make sure you make into town with safe passengers." Ezra said.
"My baby boy," a woman called out. Ezra turned.
"Mother," he said and walked over to her.
Maude kissed him.
"My sweet baby boy." She smiled.
"Mother, what brings you here?" Ezra asked.
"Well I received a letter that you had a surprise
to show me and I couldn't resist," Ezra smiled.
He turned and grabbed Rachael and walked her
over to Maude. "Mother, this is Rachael Charleston." Maude's eyes grew
big. The thought going threw her mind was. "God he's found a girl".
Maude smiled and spoke. "My dear it's a pleasure
to meet my son's mistress," Ezra laughed.
"Mother, she's a friend." That was it. Rachael
had it. Rachael bust through Ezra's grip around her waist and got on her
horse. Ezra stopped her horse.
"Ezra, get the hell away from me," she said.
"Rachael, what's wrong"?, he said strongly.
"You only want me for my money Ezra. You sleep
with me, not out of love. You don't love me and I'm not going to take it
from you to call me "Your Friend"." She rode out and left Ezra standing
there confused.
Buck looked at JD. "I'm going to get her".
Buck left JD and Ezra there and headed after Rachael.
Ezra walked back to JD and his mother. "I
don't know what has gotten into her," Ezra said. JD laughed. Ezra walked
up to JD and JD stopped laughing. JD knew Ezra was mad and that he would
kill JD if he wanted to. Ezra walked over to Mac. "Let's get going." Mac
got on the stage and called all the passengers and they began to move.
Ezra and JD mounted their horses and headed off to Four Corners.
Rachael was running her horse with all she
had. Tears streamed down her face. Buck was losing distance between her
and him. He started catching up when Rachael stopped at a tree and sat
down. She put her head on her knees and cried. Buck rode up and got off.
"Rachael what's wrong?" Rachael looked up.
"You wouldn't understand Buck," she said.
Buck sat with her.
"Try me," Rachael laughed, then she smiled.
Buck laughed. "I know a girl telling me what's
wrong seems weird to you don't it?" Rachael nodded.
"Let me guess. Ezra to you feels like he's
using you," Buck said. Rachael nodded.
"Buck it's just that it seems Ezra wants me,
because he just uses me. To call me his friend is something different.
He doesn't just sleep with his friend. And look he's not coming after me.
I feel bad."
Buck put his hand on her back. "Rachael, he
loves you very much and well, I think at times his conning gets in the
way and he doesn't know what he's doing wrong and besides look." He pointed
to the hill. Ezra was coming down. Buck got on his horse when Rachael asked
him to leave. Buck meet Ezra half way.
"Ezra, I'm warning you. You come back to town
without her, I'll kill you." Buck headed on. Ezra rode up to Rachael
and got off. Rachael looked away.
"My dear what did I do immoral?" Rachael cried.
"Do you sleep with all your friends," she
said. Ezra ran his hand through his hair.
"My dear, I didn't mean to call you my friend.
My dear I'm sorry." She stood and walked a little ways away. He followed
her.
"Ezra, it hurts. God it hurts, can't you say
I'm your girlfriend or something better then friend? Ezra, I love you".
She turned.
"My dear I don't know what to do. I have slept
with one other voluptuary in my life and I have didn't mean to trouble
you. I'm sorry." Rachael started to walk away. Ezra grabbed her tight and
brought her close to him. She couldn't breath nor get out of his arms.
"I love you," he whispered.
She looked into his eyes. "I love you," she
whispered back. He kissed her and she kissed him back. He let her go. She
hugged him and kissed his check. "Ezra I'm sorry." He smiled.
"It's all right. I'm sorry, lets go
back home", he said.
She smiled. "I'd like that." They got on their
horses and rode off into the sunset.
The End
