The characters of Rebecca Wilkes, Linda Murdock and Conner Carter were created by the authors of this story.

Buck and JD were riding in the area surrounding Four Corners, a scheduled patrol. On their way back to town, they passed by Rebecca Connelly-Wilkes' house. Becky, (as most people called her), was Chris Larabee's sister-in-law who'd been living in Four Corners for the past four months.

Buck reined in his horse and stopped a short distance behind her place. The windows were open and distinctively female laughter could be heard.

Buck shook his head, "Sounds like they're having a good time." JD laughed, "There ain't no way you're getting into that shindig, Buck."

Buck looked at JD, "I know it. Just the thought of all those lovely ladies-"

JD said, "Well, the same ladies will all be at the wedding in a couple of days. You'll have to wait." JD looked at Becky's house. "Why do women have these sorts of parties?"

Buck grinned at his young friend, "Same reason men take the groom out and get him drunk before the wedding. A send off of sorts."

JD laughed again, "I don't think you're going to need to get Josiah drunk to get him to his wedding. He wanted to get married a few weeks ago. The only reason they held off is Becky wants a proper wedding in a church."

Buck nodded, "You got a point there. But that's Becky for you. Women hold more stock in that sort of thing than men do." Buck laughed, "Speaking of send offs, Becky's father, Hank, told me that the night before he got married, all his friends took him out, striped him from the waist down and painted him up with Mercurochrome."

JD made a face, "That's cruel."

Buck laughed, "It's funny as hell."

JD said, "The women folk in town have sure taken to Becky."

Buck said, "Well, I think that has to do with her helping Mary and the other ladies when that Jones character and his friends came to rob the bank. Becky went a long way toward winning them over. Nettie Wells has been especially taken with her."

JD grinned, "Mrs. Wells loves any woman who ain't afraid to take on a man."

Buck nodded, "Becky has never been afraid of any man, that's for sure. Let's get back to town. Chris ought to have Josiah over at the saloon by now. We can give him a good send off ourselves!" The two rode back toward town.

In Becky's house, some of her friends are gathered; Mary Travis, Casey and Nettie Wells, Gloria Potter, Inez Recillos and a new acquaintance, Linda Murdock. Linda had formerly been a bounty hunter but was now ready to put down stakes and start a horse ranch. The gals are sitting around Becky's kitchen table. Casey is just looking out the back window, peeking around the curtain and laughing.

"There go Buck and JD," Casey said. "Told you they'd be snooping around!"

Becky said, "And that surprises you? Typical of Buck -- in all the years I've known him, he could never stand not knowing what ladies are up to when no men folk are around."

Inez grinned, "I think that could be said of most men -- they're just not as obvious as Buck."

"Thank goodness," Mary said with a laugh.

Casey takes a seat at the table again

. "You'd think they'd have better things to do," Linda said.

Gloria said, "Some men do."

Nettie added, "Some men just don't know no better. Becky, you're lucky. Josiah's a good man."

Becky smiled, "Thanks, Nettie, he is. I'm feeling much more confident this time around."

Nettie looked at Becky, "First husband gave you trouble?"

Becky shook her head, "Plenty of it. He didn't want to quit chasing fillies after we got married."

"Bah -- bad news that," Nettie said. "You ever confront him on it?" Becky laughed, "Well, I did shoot him once."

Laughter around the table. Nettie nodded and said, "Good for you."

Linda asked, with a laugh, "Does Josiah know about that?"

"Yes -- I told him that story before we even started courting," Becky said. "My husband was home on furlough. I caught David with some girl and wanted to give him a scare. I didn't really mean to shoot him but I was upset, not paying attention to what I was doing and the gun misfired. Shot him in the thigh." The gals all laugh again.

Gloria asked, "Do you have any family coming for the wedding?"

Becky shook her head, "Don't really have any family left, Gloria. My mother died of typhoid just around the time the war ended. You know about Sarah, Adam and my father. Last one I had left was my grandmother. She died just before I moved here."

"Any family on your husband's side?" Nettie asked.

"My father-in-law may still be alive. He moved to South Carolina after the war but I haven't heard from him since Sarah died. I did write to him but haven't gotten an answer. David had an older brother, Samuel, who died at Gettysburg. About six months after David died, his mother passed away. I think she just gave up when she lost her two boys. I pretty much only have Chris. And I guess you could count Buck, too; he's been like family to me." Becky said.

Nettie nodded, "War was awful. Hurt a lot more than the people fightin' in it. Well, you got us, child."

Becky reached over and took Nettie's hand; gave it a squeeze, "I know that, Nettie, and thank you."

Mary shook her head, "Well, lets talk about a happier subject; we got a wedding coming up after all. You still have to show us your dress."

Over at the saloon, Josiah, Chris, Vin, Nathan and Ezra were sitting at a table, having some whiskey when Buck and JD walked in. Buck takes a seat at the table, "There is a whale of a hen party going on over at Becky's."

Chris looks up at Buck, "Don't tell me you went over there."

JD takes a seat and adds, "No, we were just passing by. Even Buck wouldn't dare those gals today."

"A wise decision, Mr. Dunne," Josiah said with a chuckle.

Buck adds, "Well, this isn't much of a send off for Josiah."

"They're not takin' me out to be shot by a firing squad, Buck," Josiah said.

"Still feels like a wake," Buck said.

Vin and Chris laugh. Chris shakes his head, "What do you want to do, Buck, take him to a whorehouse? I think you'd be likely to get Becky after your head."

"Aw, that wasn't what I meant at all. I wouldn't do that to Becky. What do you take me for?" Buck said.

Vin grinned, "You want us to answer that?"

"I think Mr. Wilmington just means that we are not very lively," Ezra said.

JD asked, "What's the point of this anyway?"

Josiah looked at JD and said, "Just an acknowledgement of life's changes, JD."

JD shook his head, "It's not like you're leaving."

"No, that's true" Josiah said. "But I'll be a married man. That does change things somewhat. Not that Rebecca's putting on any pressure to leave my peacekeeping duties -- it's quite the opposite. Still I have a responsibility to her now. That does change decisions I make from here on out."

"Isn't the man supposed to be the boss?" JD asked.

Chris laughed at that and shook his head, "You got a lot to learn, kid."

Josiah said, "Well, JD, I guess that depends on what type of a marriage a man wants. I don't have any desire to be Rebecca's boss."

Nathan added, "Can't see any man bossin' Becky around."

"Not if he wants to live to see another day," Chris said, "Sis, can be tough when she wants to. Don't think you'll have that trouble with her, `Siah."

Josiah grinned, "It hasn't happened yet. But I don't see Rebecca wantin' to be my boss any more than I want to be hers. We'll work things out together. I think that's the way it should be."

JD shook his head, "Wish I could say that about Casey. She always wants to be the boss."

The men all laugh.

Rebecca woke early. She sits in her kitchen having a cup of coffee. Dawn is just about to break. It is her wedding day today. While she is thrilled to be marrying Josiah, she can only think of her family and how none of them will be here to share this day with her. She had sent Josiah home the night before, just before midnight, being traditional and telling him it was bad luck for him to see her before the wedding. She has about six hours now, before Casey will be coming over, to start getting ready for the ceremony. She and Josiah had asked Casey and Nathan to stand up for them at the double-ring ceremony. Casey was so excited that Becky thought it seemed as if it was Casey's wedding day. That thought made her smile.

Judge Travis had arrived in town with his wife the day before. Becky and Josiah, along with Chris, Casey, Nettie, Nathan and Rain had had dinner together with the Travis' at the restaurant. Becky had decided, since this was her second wedding that she was going to wear a pale, pale off-white gown but satin, no lace. She was going to carry roses from her garden and when she returned later this morning, she'd be making up bouquets for herself and Casey.

Becky finishes the coffee and goes out the back door of her house, shutting and locking it behind her. In the small barn at the back of her property, she saddles her horse and rides off in the direction of Chris and Sarah's home. She feels she must visit the cemetery where Sarah, her father and her nephew are buried before she starts her new life.

During her ride she thinks about the trip she and Josiah made to Vista City so that Becky could meet Josiah's older sister, Hannah. When they arrived at the convent, a young Nun named Susan took them to see Hannah. She commented that Hannah was having a very good day and it was the perfect time to meet her. Josiah appeared relieved.

He'd seemed especially nervous to Becky on the train ride down to Vista. Evidently there had been visits when Hannah was having a particularly bad breakdown and those visits had been difficult for Josiah. Hannah was not what Becky expected. Hannah was very quiet, almost timid, but sweet. Becky remembered that Hannah had Josiah's eyes. After Becky's own experiences with her father's mental illness, she was relieved that Hannah was so calm. Hannah had a few moments where she'd appear to leave them and have conversations with persons who weren't in the room. Becky felt it was just best to let her ramble on until her mind returned to the present. Josiah appeared tense during the times that Hannah's mind wandered. They had spent a few hours with Hannah and came back to Four Corners the next day by train part of the way and then by stage coach on the final leg of the trip. Becky wished Hannah could be at the wedding but she just was not well enough for the trip as she was still experiencing too many breakdowns and there would be no one to accompany her in any circumstance. Becky promised Hannah that they would come and visit again soon.

What troubled Becky was the Mother Superior. Superior was a good word for her, Becky had thought. One of those holier than thou types that Becky has always despised. This woman had known that Josiah had once been a priest and had been defrocked. She so looked her nose down at them during their visit that Becky wanted to smack her. What an impression that would have made, Becky thought. Fortunately, they did not have to spend much time with her. Becky liked the other Nuns, the ones that had the direct responsibility of caring for Hannah. Becky had a moment for a private word with Sister Susan and Becky gave the Sister her address in Four Corners and made a point to tell her that if there was ever anything Hannah needed, for the Sister to feel free to contact her (Becky). Becky told the Sister she wanted to be sure that Hannah had the best care available and cost was not a consideration.

Her thoughts are interrupted as she tops a rise and runs into Ezra and Buck. They are on an early morning patrol and are arguing about something. Becky almost laughs -- it is always some debate with these two.

Ezra spots her first and tips his hat, "Good morning, Becky. Not running out on the groom, I hope? Leaving them at the altar is always in such bad taste," he teases.

Now she does laugh, "Good morning, Ezra -- Buck. No, I'm not going to leave Josiah waiting at the altar, I can assure you!"

"Morning, Becky," Buck said, "Let me guess -- wedding jitters?"

"No, wrong again," she said. "I'm heading over to Chris and Sarah's ranch. Just want to visit the cemetery, is all."

Ezra nods, "Well, we shouldn't let you go alone. What if Mr. Wilmington and I escort you there and back?"

"Thank you, gentlemen. I'd enjoy the company," Becky says.

= = = = = = =

Becky, Buck and Ezra had reached Chris' former ranch. Becky rode down the hill to the cemetery. Ezra and Buck held back a bit to give her some privacy.

Ezra said to Buck, "Why do you suppose she wanted to come here today? You'd think most gals would be home primping for their wedding."

Buck shrugged, "Well, Becky's not `most gals'. And she's got family buried here. Probably just getting sentimental since she's getting married." Buck looked down the hill to where Becky had hitched her horse on the fence that surrounded the cemetery. "She really misses Sarah. I remember the morning of the funeral; she was in pretty bad shape. Cried all day. She was trying hard to hold it in, for Chris' sake. She went through a lot of grief from her father for Chris and Sarah. Some things even Chris never knew about." Buck paused for a moment and then added, "I'm glad she's not going to be alone anymore."

= = = = = = =

Becky squatted down beside the graves; tears splashed down onto her cheeks. "Sarah, I wish you were here. I wish you could have known Josiah. He's everything I've always wanted. Just know that I'm happy," she whispered. She pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her face. She straightened up and looked up the hill. She could see Buck watching her and talking to Ezra. She stood quietly for a few moments. She took a deep breath and blew it out. She climbed on her horse and rode up the hill to meet them.

= = = = = = =

Chris rode into Four Corners early in the morning. He had a good suit that he'd left at the church. He'd dress there after getting a meal at the saloon -- maybe he'd bring along a bottle of whiskey in case Josiah needed a brace. And then he'd go get Becky and Casey before the ceremony. He grinned to himself thinking about his own wedding day and wondering how Josiah was holding up.

= = = = = = =

At the church, Josiah was sitting in his room, deep in thought. He had just come from the barbers and had a haircut and a shave. He was going to shave off his mustache for the ceremony but when he told Becky, she'd said no -- she liked the mustache and not to shave it off. He was surprised that he was not all that nervous about his wedding. He pulled out his pocket watch and looked at it. It was 11 am. The ceremony would start at 1 pm, so there was still some time. Becky had given him a new leather-bound Bible as a wedding present and he'd marked passages in it for Judge Travis to read during the ceremony. Josiah had planned on being in his good suit by noon with the doors to the church opened for guests to start arriving. Judge Travis and Nathan had both promised to be there by noon to help Josiah greet the guests as Chris would be heading over to Becky's house to bring her to the ceremony. He had a ring box with the wedding rings in the pocket of his vest. Had to remember to give them to Nathan when he arrived. He thought he'd have a quick bite to eat and then think about getting dressed.

= = = = = = =

At Becky's house, Casey had arrived with her Aunt Nettie. Nettie wanted to watch them get ready and since Becky's mother had died some years before, Becky was happy to have Nettie there. She needed help with the buttons on the back of her dress. She could manage most of them but some were just out of reach. Nettie was such a straightforward person that she kept Becky from feeling nervous. Casey was dressed in light blue and she looked pretty. Becky was going to help her with her make up. Both of them planned on wearing their hair up for the ceremony. Becky had picked roses earlier, white for her and pink for Casey. She had cut the stems and wrapped the stems in ribbon with a nice size bow on the front. Both bouquets were in Becky's kitchen, sitting in a shallow bowl of water to keep them fresh. Becky had tucked new lace handkerchiefs inside both bouquets in case she or Casey needed them during the ceremony -- a little trick she'd learned from a friend of hers. She had cut a few extra flowers for her and Casey to put in their hair.

Becky had bought two lace garters with blue ribbon running through them to wear that day. She had a new dress, petticoat, shoes and the pearl earrings Josiah had given her as a wedding present. Josiah told everyone that he was her "something old". She'd needed something borrowed and Mary had loaned her a pearl necklace that looked wonderful with the sweetheart neckline of her wedding dress. She really did have something old. She had her mother's wedding gown and she had taken a piece of lace from the dress and woven it into her bouquet. It sat just above the ribbon tying the bouquet together and looked very pretty. Becky had shown that to Nettie and Casey, when they'd asked and Becky noticed that Nettie got teary-eyed when Becky had explained where the lace was from.

Becky was admiring herself in the full length mirror in her front parlor when there was a knock at the door. It was Chris. When Becky opened the door, he just stood and looked at her. Then he smiled, "Becky, you're beautiful." He stepped in and gave her a hug, "You look just like a bride," he teased.

Becky said, "You look pretty good yourself. New suit?"

Chris grinned, "Yeah, I figured I better -- sort of a special occasion and all."

She smiled back at him and said with a laugh, "You're still the only man I know who wears a side arm to church!"

Nettie and Casey came out of the bedroom. "Hi Chris," Casey said.

 "Good morning, Chris," Nettie added.

"Good morning, Ladies," Chris said. "Don't you all look lovely today."

Nettie laughed, "You're just an old smoothie, Chris Larabee." Nettie walked over toward Becky, "I'm going to head over to the church now. I'll see you all later."

"Good-bye, Nettie and thank you," Becky said. They exchanged kisses on the cheek.

= = = = = = =

A short time later, Becky stood with Casey and Chris outside the church. The church doors were closed. Chris had brought them over in Becky's buggy and put it behind the Grain Exchange building.

Casey said to Becky, "Are you nervous?"

Becky smiled, "No -- are you?"

"Yes!" Casey laughed. Chris and Becky laughed with her.

One of the doors to the Church opened and JD peeked out. He grinned at them, "Are you ready?" he whispered.

Chris looked at Becky. She smiled and said, "Yup, all set."

Casey started up the stairs; Becky took Chris' arm and followed. JD opened the door on the right and it was Buck who opened the door on the left. Buck looked at Becky, nodding approvingly and smiled, "Good luck, Becky," he whispered. "Thanks, Buck," she whispered back to him.

It took Becky's eyes a moment to adjust from the bright light outside to the subdued lighting in the church. She blinked and caught sight of Judge Travis standing at the altar. He smiled and gave her a friendly nod. Chris paused for a moment while Casey walked down the aisle. Becky's knees suddenly felt weak and she gripped Chris' arm tighter. He glanced at her, "Are you okay, sis?"

"Yes," she whispered. She looked down the aisle and caught sight of Josiah smiling at her. She immediately felt relieved, all nervousness left her. She smiled back at him. She and Chris walked down the aisle so she could start her new life.

= = = = = = =

Josiah and Becky's wedding went off without a hitch. The only moment that gave Becky pause was when Judge Travis asked if there was `anyone who knew of any reason why these two should not be joined together, let him speak now or else, hereafter, hold his peace'.

She'd had a strange dream a few weeks earlier that her late husband, David, had walked into the ceremony. But nothing happened and no one said anything at that point in the ceremony.

They were declared man and wife and had their first kiss as a married couple.

In a bar in Purgatory, Guy Royal sat at a table, finishing off a whiskey. A tall, dark haired man walked up to him. The tall man said, "I hear you have a score to settle in Four Corners with a man named Larabee."

Royal looked up, "Yeah, so, what's it to you?"

The dark haired man, Conner Carter, said, "Larabee and a Bounty Hunter named Murdock caused some problems for me. Perhaps we can help each other out."

"Have a seat," Royal said.

The reception was in full swing. Josiah and Becky were making the rounds, talking to guests.

They were planning a trip to San Francisco, as Becky had never been there before but they weren't leaving until the next afternoon taking a stage coach to the train depot. Becky was just looking forward to having Josiah to herself for a few days.

Everyone had a good time. Dancing was probably the most popular item on the agenda.

Linda mainly divided her time between Vin and Ezra.

Rain had come in for the wedding and spent all her time with Nathan. JD couldn't quite get over Casey's appearance in a long fancy dress with her hair up. He refrained from making mention of it as he did not want to be punched in the stomach.

Chris divided his time between Mary and Billy Travis. Billy just wanted to talk about horses. Chris promised to take Billy out to his shack to go riding now that Billy was getting old enough to sit on his own horse.

Buck divided his time among all the single gals at the wedding. That was until Inez caught Becky's bouquet. Then he ducked out back of the Grain Exchange with JD to tie tin cans to the back of Becky's buggy.

= = = = = = =

The reception broke up just before dark fell in Four Corners. Josiah had wanted to leave, but Becky wanted to stay to almost the bitter end. She wanted to enjoy every bit of this day, she told Josiah. She must have danced with every man who came to the reception and she loved every minute of being one of the centers of attention.

At one point, Josiah had Becky alone in a corner of the room and was whispering that no one would even notice if they left; the guests were all having such a good time. She smiled at him and finally acquiesced.

They slipped out of the Grain Exchange and found their buggy behind the building. Josiah helped Becky into it and they made the short trip to their house. Becky laughed when she heard the tin cans that Buck and JD had tied to the back of the buggy. Josiah took the horses and buggy to the barn. Becky was about to go into the house, but Josiah told her to wait for him. When he was finished they headed up the steps to the little back porch that was off the kitchen. He unlocked the door and opened it. Then he swept her up into his arms to carry her across the threshold. She laughed; she had forgotten about this and thought that was probably why Josiah had asked her to wait for him.

As they walked through the quiet house to the bedroom, it finally hit her that she was now a wife. But this time with a husband she not only loved, but could trust. Maybe that was why she hadn't been so nervous this time around. Josiah did not give her any cause for worry. She promised herself she would be the best wife she could and make sure he never regretting marrying her.

In the bedroom, light streamed in through one of the windows. Becky went over to look past the curtain and saw that there was a full moon out. She was surprised she hadn't noticed it before. She turned back and saw Josiah was staring at her.

"What -- is something wrong?" she asked.

He smiled, "No. You just look so beautiful standing there in the moonlight."

She smiled and walked over to him. "Charmer," she said.

He pulled her against him and gave her a long kiss.

"Would you help me with these buttons?" Becky asked, turning slightly. Josiah undid the buttons that went down the back of her dress. Giving him a shy smile over her shoulder, she slipped the dress off and laid it across a chair. She moved over toward the dresser and began taking the pins out of her auburn hair, allowing it to fall down around her shoulders.

Josiah took the hint and began undressing himself. By the time he was finished, Becky was only clad in her chemise.

She turns away and drops the straps to the chemise. She slowly lets it fall to the floor. Josiah moves behind her. He touches her back where the scar is. She is trembling but not from cold. She feels his lips on her shoulder moving toward the nape of her neck and his mustache tickles. He gently turns her around and looks down at her. He puts his hand under her chin and raises her face to his. "You are so beautiful," he whispers. She swallows; there are tears in her eyes, "I love you so much," she whispers. She presses against him and he takes her into his arms and kisses her. Her arms wrap around his neck. He leans down, puts his arm under her knees and picks her up. He carries her over to the bed.

Placing her down gently in the center of the bed, he climbs in beside her. He pulls her into his arms and kisses her again. His lips travel down below her chin and down her throat. She leans her head back and sighs. He kisses his way down her chest toward her breast. Reaching her nipple, he teases it with this tongue before taking it into his mouth and sucking at it. She moans gently. He feels her hands running through his hair.

He fondles her other breast with his hand. Massaging it before working his fingers down to the other nipple. He takes the nipple between his thumb and forefinger and squeezes it. She squirms with pleasure. Removing his hand from her nipple, he slides his hand down over her abdomen. His fingertips touch her mound. She spreads her legs open for him. He begins to stroke her clitoris. Looking up at her, he sees Becky has her eyes closed. Her hips move slowly. Smiling, he moves down from her breast and begins to kiss the inside of her thigh.

His tongue moves to her clitoris. He slips his finger into her vagina, drawing it in and out, causing her to gasp. Becky grasps the bedding in her hands as her body shudders. "Oh, god, Josiah," she whispers. Josiah can feel the orgasm that takes her.

Josiah moves up beside her. Becky is smiling at him and trying to catch her breath. She gives him a push, indicating he should get on his back. He grins at her. She leans over him and gives him a long, open mouthed kiss. She can taste herself on his lips. She begins to kiss her way down his heavily muscled chest and continues down his abdomen. She reaches his cock and begins to kiss her way up the shaft. Reaching the tip, she takes it into her mouth, sucking on it while teasing the underside with her tongue. While keeping his member in her mouth, she begins to stroke the shaft. Josiah mutters a curse under his breath.

When he feels he's getting too close to orgasm, Josiah reaches down and grasps Becky under her arms. Pulling her up beside him, he presses her onto her back and whispers in her ear, "No. The first time, I need to be inside you."

She spreads her legs for him. He's kissing her while he pushes his hard cock into her warm, wet vagina. "You feel so good, honey," he said. He begins to thrust into her. She moves her hips with his, picking up his rhythm. He looks at her face, her breasts. He quickens and deepens his thrusts. With a murmur of "Oh, god," he comes and his body falls on top of her.

Becky begins to kiss Josiah; his cheek and his neck. She puts her arms around him and holds him, enjoying the feel of his weight on top of her. Looking at each other, they both smile. He runs his fingers through her hair.

"I love you so much," he said, kissing her gently.

"I love you, too," she whispers.

They had both been waiting for this for so long but it had been well worth the wait. They snuggle into each others arms and drift off to sleep.

= = = = = = =

The next morning, Josiah wakes to the scents of fresh coffee and bacon. Becky was already up and in the kitchen. He smiled to himself thinking, `She's going to spoil me'. She came back into the bedroom, in her wrapper, bringing him a cup of coffee. She set the coffee down on a side table and as soon as she put it down, Josiah grabbed her and pulled her onto the bed. She let out a laughing cry and hugged him as he began to kiss her. They made love again; neither one caring that breakfast would be cold.

Later that day, they were back at the church. Josiah had a few things to take care of at the church before they left. Judge Travis had offered to return and deliver the Sunday sermon while Josiah and Becky were in San Francisco and Josiah was putting the finishing touches on it. Becky wanted to get a few items from the general store before they left. She told Josiah she'd be back in half an hour and walked over toward the store. She had a blouse and skirt on for traveling and was wearing a bonnet.

On the way, she stopped in front of the saloon and spoke with Vin, Buck, Ezra and JD. They were all in a good mood. They teased her about still being in town -- "Where's the groom hiding? Hasn't the honeymoon started yet?" -- Those sorts of comments. Becky laughed with them for she really adored these fellows. She felt like she now had six brothers.

Across the street, at Digger Dan's saloon, Connor Carter suddenly sat up straight. He was looking out the window and said, "That's her -- Larabee's sister."

Guy Royal stood and walked to the window, "Let's see where she's going."

Becky said so long to the fellows, she was going to the general store. Buck said he had a few items to pick up, so he'd tag along. They started down the street towards the store. Buck jokingly had put his arm around Becky and gave her a hug as Ezra, Vin and JD chided him, laughing. Ezra called out, "Better make sure Josiah doesn't see you!"

Carter and Royal shared a glance. "Let's go," said Royal, as Becky and Buck disappeared into the store.

= = = = = = =

Becky was looking at some items and talking with Gloria. Buck was just wandering around the store. Becky walked down one of the aisles and as she turned, thought she saw a man pass by. She smiled, thinking it was probably Buck playing a trick on her. She started towards him when she was grabbed from behind. It wasn't Buck. "Don't move, my little rose," a familiar voice said. She felt the cold end of his knife at her throat. Carter pushed her out toward the middle of the store. Becky felt a chill course through her. She was half-scared and half-angry.

Becky let out a cry and Buck was suddenly there with his gun drawn. "Let her go," Buck said.

"I don't think so," Carter said.

"Buck, its Carter -- shoot him!" Becky said, urgently.

Across the room, Gloria stood frozen with her hand at her throat. "Oh no," she whispered.

"Buck -- shoot him!" Becky repeated.

Buck hesitated. The way Carter was standing, with Becky in front of him -- he could use her to block the bullet. Damn, Buck thought, gotta think of something. The moment's hesitation cost him. Royal suddenly appeared behind Buck and before Becky could cry out, Royal slammed Buck over the head with the butt of his gun. Buck went down.

Royal walked up to Gloria, smiling. He handed her a note. "See that Larabee gets that, if you please, Mrs. Potter." He turned back to Carter, "Let's take these two on their honeymoon." They both laughed. Royal threw Buck over his shoulder and Carter pushed Becky along, "If you scream, we'll kill him," Carter said.

Becky nodded and kept her mouth shut. She met Gloria's eyes on the way out. "Gloria, take the note out to Vin -- he'll reach Chris. Don't worry," Becky said, quietly. They disappeared out the back entrance.

Gloria's heart was racing. She clutched the note and ran out of the store, calling out for Vin.

= = = = = = =

Josiah was still writing in the church. Suddenly, JD ran in, out of breath, "Josiah, there's trouble. Becky's been kidnapped." Josiah took off after JD and ran back up the street to the crowd forming out in front of the saloon. Vin was talking to Nathan and Ezra.

Vin saw Josiah and handed him the note. As Josiah read it, Vin said, "Gloria said it was Conner Carter and Guy Royal. They grabbed Becky and apparently they knocked Buck out and took him, too. They left through the back entrance of the general store."

Josiah's mind was racing -- calm, be calm, he told himself. Josiah looked at the others, "Where's Chris?"

Vin said, "He must still be at his house. You four start after them. I'll get Chris and we'll catch up with you."

Buck woke up. He started. He was lying in the back of a moving wagon, his head in Becky's lap. Becky leaned close to him, whispered in his ear, "Buck, we're in trouble."

He looked around at the wagon (it was sealed; there was a back door with a small, barred window set into it), looked up at her, spoke in a whisper, "What happened? Where's Carter?"

"He's driving the wagon. There's some other man, I don't know him. He hit you over the head -- you've been out for a few hours." She looked concerned, "They seem to think you and I are married. Before they took us out of the store, they left a note with Gloria for Chris."

"They think we are what?!" Buck said.

"Shhh," Becky whispered.

There was talking on the front of the wagon; Buck cocked his head to the side and listened. He got a sour look on his face, "Damn," he whispered, "That's Royal."

"Who?" She looked confused.

"Guy Royal -- he's a big cattle baron. Tried to get the townsfolk out of Four Corners some time ago so he could use the land as a pass for moving his cattle." Buck sat up, moved close to her, "Let's just say he was not successful. He's got a score to settle with us. I'm sure he's plenty riled up at Chris."

Becky nodded, "And Carter has a score to settle with Linda -- they're going to use us for bait!" She looked toward the front of the wagon and said quietly, "Why didn't you shoot him?"

"Becky, you were between us -- I was afraid I would miss and shoot you."

She turned back and looked at him. Something in her expression softened.

"I have no doubt they're tracking us right now," Buck said. "That's what I was thinking too," she said. "I've been dropping little items of mine out of the back of the wagon." Buck noticed then that her hair was down.

"Your hair ribbon?"

"Yes -- I had a small piece of paper and a pencil in my purse. I wrote out a little note, slipped that out too."

"Good thinking," Buck said.

Josiah, Nathan, Ezra and JD were tracking the wagon away from town. Nathan cautioned that they should hold back a bit. The tracking was too easy and he was afraid they'd be seen. "It could be a trap to get all of us," Nathan said to Josiah.

Josiah nodded, "If it was Royal, that wouldn't surprise me." The others all nodded in agreement.

They moved forward. At one point, Ezra stopped and got off his horse. He bent down and picked something up off the ground. He smiled, "Josiah!"

Josiah stopped next to Ezra and dismounted. Ezra handed him the item he'd picked up. Josiah looked at it. It was the blue hair ribbon Becky had been wearing that morning. "That's our gal - She's alive," Ezra said. "She's letting us know she's alright. She's making sure we're on the right trail."

A short way further up the trail, JD spotted her note. It was short, the writing shaky, probably due to the wagon they were riding in. Josiah read it to the others. It said: "Josiah-its Carter w/some other man I don't know-Buck's unconscious-not sure how bad he's hurt- but we're alive-it's a trap-they want Chris & Linda-be careful-we're locked in a sealed wagon but we're okay for now-Love, Becky."

= = = = = = = =

The wagon stopped. Buck and Becky looked at each other. Becky looked at the door; she was pale and looked scared. Buck took her hand and held it. She squeezed his tight in return and did not let go.

There were footsteps outside. Buck felt his body tense up. His head ached but he ignored it. The door opened. Royal stood there, Carter just behind him.

"Come on out, folks," Royal said.

Buck got out of the wagon and turned around to help Becky down. As soon as they were out, she grabbed Buck's hand again and held on tight. They were in a small compound of some sort. A few adobe buildings scattered about and a high wall surrounded them.

Buck looked at Royal, "What do you want from us?"

Royal smiled, "Easy, friend, it ain't you or your little woman I want at all. If you behave yourselves, you'll be treated well and we'll let you go in a couple of days."

"Why should I believe you?" Buck asked.

"You're alive now, ain't you?" Royal replied, "It would have been easy enough to kill you before but I don't believe in killing when I don't have to." He turned and motioned to several men who stood watching, "Take `em down and lock `em up in the cellar."

Buck and Becky started to follow the men Royal had indicated. Carter started to reach for Becky as she passed and Royal smacked him, "No -- you ain't touching the woman. I'll have none of that while you're working for me, dammit." Becky heard that comment, swallowed and moved closer to Buck. Buck looked at Carter, his eyes narrowing as he put his arm around Becky protectively.

They were led to a door built into the ground, like a storm cellar. The door was set at an angle and had a barred window set into it.

The door opened and one of the men motioned for Buck and Becky to go down the stairs. He and two other men followed, with guns drawn.

The room below ground was well fortified with brick walls. There was a large jail cell built onto one side, a cot, a couple of chairs & a small table inside. The first man opened the cell door and motioned for them to get inside. They did. There was water, beef jerky and some fruit sitting on the small table and a lamp was lit on the table. The man shut and locked the cell door. He said, "Someone will bring you dinner later." He motioned to the other men and they all left. The door in the ceiling shut and they heard it locked. The room was plunged into darkness. The only light was coming from the small window and the oil lamp on the table. They looked at each other. Becky had tears in her eyes.

Buck said, "You're worried about the others."

She nodded, "You know they're tracking us." She looked up at the door, "I don't care about myself, Buck. I'm sorry you got dragged into this."

He looked down at her, "Becky, don't worry -- I'll figure some way to get us out of here."

She looked back up at him, "How's your head?"

"Hurts, but I'll be okay."

"Maybe you should stretch out, get some more rest."

"No, I'm too antsy." He started moving around the cell; checking on the door, testing the strength of the bars of the cell. Becky took a seat in one of the chairs.

Becky looked around the cell. There was something in the far corner she couldn't see to clearly. She looked closer and realized it was a chamber pot with a "Sears & Roebuck" catalog along side it. Well, she thought if we have to make use of that, at least we can turn off the lamp and have some privacy in the dark.

Becky leaned back in the chair and looked down at her wide gold wedding band. Then she looked up at the window. She was thinking about Josiah.

= = = = = = =

Vin reached Chris' house and found Chris sitting out front. Chris was angry when he heard Carter and Royal had taken Becky. He wasted no time getting his gear together and the two rode off to follow the wagon.

= = = = = = =

Linda had slept in late that morning. She had spent the night dancing at the reception with Vin and Ezra and she'd had a really good time. She woke late and stretched, enjoying a good long lie in bed that she did not get to do often. She got up and looked out the window at the main street. She noticed a group of people in front of the saloon and wondered what was going on. She thought she'd get washed, dressed and head down there for something to eat.

A short time later she arrived at the saloon. Inez called her over to the bar when Linda entered.

"Have your heard?" Inez asked.

"Heard what?" Linda asked.

"Oh, God -- sit down," Inez said. Linda sat and Inez leaned over the bar. "Becky and Buck have been kidnapped. By Conner Carter and Guy Royal."

"What? When?" Linda asked, suddenly concerned.

"A few hours ago. Becky was in the general store getting a few things for her trip. Buck was there and so was Gloria Potter.

Carter grabbed Becky and Gloria said Becky kept telling Buck to shoot Carter. Before Buck could do anything, Royal slammed Buck over the head and knocked him out. They left a note for Chris and took off with them. Gloria found Vin and gave him the note."

"Where are the rest of the men?" Linda asked.

"Josiah took Nathan, Ezra and JD and went out after Becky and Buck. Vin rode out to Chris' place to get him," Inez said.

"Are they coming back?" Linda asked.

"No, Vin said they were going to go straight out after Becky and Buck," Inez said. "It's been a few hours and we haven't heard anything. I'm getting worried."

"Do you know which way they went?" Linda asked.

"No idea, sorry," Inez said.

Linda stood up. "Where are you going?" Inez asked.

"To see Gloria Potter," Linda said, running out of the saloon.

= = = = = = =

Josiah and the others reached the compound. Nathan suggested they not go out in the open but move up into the hills and stay in the woods until it got dark. Then they could try to scout it out under the cover of darkness. Josiah agreed, reluctantly. He knew a full assault on the place could possibly be suicide, not knowing what was inside. He also knew that Chris and Vin would be on their way soon and more numbers would better their chances. However, he was worried about Rebecca being locked in there with Conner Carter nearby. Josiah was planning to rip that man to shreds when he got his hands on Carter. Josiah was determined that Carter would not walk away this time, no matter what happened.

Just as dark falls, Chris and Vin arrive. JD met them and brought them up into the hills where the others were.

"Anything?" Chris asks.

Josiah shakes his head, "It's been quiet. We were just going to start scouting out the compound now that it's dark."

Chris nods, "All right. Let's move out on foot but everyone be careful. We'll make a circle around the compound and then come back here and decide what we're going to do."

They move out and staying in the darkness, circle the compound. It is fairly straightforward -- only one main entrance but they can see men guarding it. Up on the walls, there are men walking on what must be a lookout platform, built around the compound structure, but there do not appear to be that many. Through the main entrance, they can see some adobe buildings.

When they returned to the hills, Vin had a plan. "Those adobe walls would be pretty easy to scale. What if Nathan and I climb up there and take out the guards on the wall under the cover of darkness?"

Chris nods, "Then just before dawn, the rest of us storm the place."

= = = = = = =

Linda spoke with Gloria in the general story and got the rest of the story. After she was finished, Gloria said, "Royal said to give the note to Chris but Vin took it with him. Royal would have a score to settle with the seven after they spoiled his plans. He wanted us out of town to use this as a pass for his cattle. He also tried to run out the homesteaders in the outlying areas so he could sell their land to the railroad. Both times the men foiled his plans. And that Conner Carter would not be happy over what you and the seven did to his gang."

Linda nodded, "I wonder if I should go after them?"

"I don't think you should. No offense, Linda, but the men will have enough to worry about. Be best to stay here and wait until they come back. It's gonna be dark soon. You'd have a hard time tracking them anyway," Gloria said.

"I don't like just sitting around waiting," Linda said.

"I understand that," Gloria said. "Look, I'm going to close up the store early. Let's head back over to the saloon. We'll stop and see Mary on the way. Perhaps someone has heard something."

= = = = = = =

It was dark out. Two of the men had brought dinner to Becky and Buck some time earlier and slipped it under the cell door. Becky felt exhausted, mostly from worry. She noticed Buck looked a bit unsteady on his feet. Becky got up and walked over to Buck. She took his arm and led him over to the cot.

"Buck, you've got to sleep," she said.

"No, you have the cot," he said. "I can sleep in a chair."

"No," Becky said, "I'm worried about that bump on your head. You could fall out of a chair and get hurt worse. You take the cot. I'll be fine." She smiled, "Besides, you'll need your strength. You know Chris, Josiah and the boys must be here by now. Something is bound to start happening soon."

Buck nodded, no longer resisting. "Okay, sis, if you say so." He lay down on the cot and fell asleep after just a few minutes.

Becky moved back to one of the chairs. She closed her eyes and tried to rest.

= = = = = = =

Becky surprised herself by dropping off to sleep. She slept for a few hours. It was just before dawn when she woke; Buck was shaking her shoulder.

"Becky -- Becky, wake up," Buck said.

Becky blinked, looked up at Buck, "What?" She said, sleepily.

"Something's happening topside," Buck said. They both listened.

= = = = = = =

Early in the morning, Linda was up sitting in front of the saloon. She only sat for a few minutes, then she got up and paced. No word had come from the men and they had still not returned. Linda had eaten breakfast early with Inez and Mary. The three of them talked about what should be done. Mary's father-in-law, Judge Travis had still been in town that morning. He cautioned them to wait for news. He and his wife had taken the morning stage out of town as the Judge had a trial to oversee. He told Mary to telegraph him when there was news. If need be, he'd postpone the trial and come back. He felt confident that Chris and the others could handle Guy Royal and Conner Carter. The Judge said he was planning to be back in town to give the Sunday Sermon for Josiah at any rate.

= = = = = = =

Becky was tense. She could hear the gunshots above them and hear men yelling. Buck seemed incredibly calm to her but she knew he'd rather be up topside in the thick of things. They stood beside each other by the cell door, not speaking but just listening to all the noise up above them.

Suddenly the cellar door opened, they both looked up toward it. It was Royal coming down the stairs. He did not look happy. He has a shotgun over his arm and his pistol was in his right hand. He ran down the stairs.

"That damn, Carter," he was muttering, "he should have told me that Bounty Hunter was a woman. I hope he chokes." He looked at Becky and Buck, continued to move close to the cell. "OK, ma'am, you're coming with me. I want to get out of this hellhole alive and I need a hostage." He looked at Buck, "Step back away from the cell door."

Buck moved back a few steps. He turned and looked at Becky.

An idea suddenly flew into Becky's head -- could it work? This was their only chance and she was going to take it. "Let me just get my bonnet," she said, wanting Royal distracted. She turned and headed back for the table, picked up her bonnet. She acted calm, as if she was getting ready for a pleasure trip.

"Got no time for that -- move!" Royal said.

Becky had the bonnet up in front of her face, as though she was adjusting something -- she met Buck's eyes, held them and winked at him. With the bonnet in front of her face, Royal could not see her. Buck braced himself, wondering what Becky was going to do. He was ready for anything now.

Royal had his pistol in his right hand and moved his rifle over to the crook of his right arm so he could unlock the cell with his left hand. He unlocked the cell and opened the door, but just a short way. Becky came through the doorway and pretended to stumble. She grabbed the cell door and pushed it open as though she was grabbing it for support. As she went down, Royal instinctively reached to help her and that was his mistake. Becky quickly sidestepped when she saw Buck start to make his move. Buck came barreling through the doorway and grabbed Royal, pushing him across the room and into the wall. Royal's handgun and rifle went flying. Becky straightened up and grabbed up both weapons. When Royal hit the wall, you could hear the gasp that escaped from his body.

Buck stepped back and caught the handgun that Becky tossed to him. Royal looked up at them, eyes hard and breathing heavy. "Damn you," Royal said, out of breath, glaring at Buck, "Its time to end this now." Suddenly, Royal pulled a large knife and ran at Buck. Buck dropped him with a single shot. Buck stood there and just stared down at Royal.

Becky ran over to Buck and hugged him, "You were wonderful, Buck," she cried.

Buck looked down at her, surprised, "Quick thinking on your part, sis. I don't think Royal wanted to be taken into custody."

Becky looked at Royal, "He'd probably hang now, and perhaps he couldn't face that."

They both looked up at the cellar door. Things had quieted some although there were still isolated gunshots. Buck took Becky's hand, "Come on; let's get out of this hole."

They went up the stairs, slowly. Buck said, "Stay close to me." Becky nodded. Buck carefully poked his head out of the doorway and took a quick look around. "It looks quiet," he whispered.

"Be careful," she cautioned.

Suddenly a voice called out, "Buck!"

Becky grinned and squeezed Buck's hand, "It's Chris!"

Buck called out, "Chris, is it safe?"

"Yeah! It's over!" Chris called back.

Buck came out, holding Becky's hand to help her up the stairs. They looked around. Royal's men were all over the ground, all dead.

Becky kept looking around. Then she saw them. The six of them, some on horseback, and some on foot were across the compound heading straight for her and Buck. Becky let out a cry, dropped the rifle she had held and ran toward them. Josiah reined in his horse and jumped off it. He and Becky ran toward each other and she threw herself into his arms.

= = = = = = =

A short time later, Becky was standing with Chris and Josiah, shaking her head. "No," she said, "I'm telling you he's not here. Could Carter have escaped again?" They had been looking at the dead men. Vin, Ezra, Buck, JD and Nathan came toward them from different areas of the compound. Nathan was shaking his head, "Chris," he said, "we've searched every building. There is no one else here."

Becky turned to Vin, "Linda didn't come with you?"

"No," Vin said slowly, "She's back in Four Corners."

Becky turned and looked at Buck.

"We've got to go back," she said.

"Grab a horse and let's move," Buck said. Both Becky and Buck took off running. The others followed.

Ezra caught up with Becky and said, "What did I miss?"

Becky said, "It's Carter -- he could be headed for Four Corners.

That's what this was all about. He wants to kill her. He's furious at her about what happened in Watsonville when the seven of you and the Kiowa wiped out his gang."

= = = = = = =

Conner Carter was on a ridge overlooking Four Corners. It was late in the afternoon when he reached town. He tied his horse up behind the general store and slipped down an alley way. He saw three children playing catch. The smallest boy was the closest to him. He smiled and thought that will get the Bounty Hunter's attention right quick. He kept his eye on the children. The two older ones, a boy and girl, left when they heard a woman call them, from the area of the general store. The smaller boy, Billy Travis, moved into the alleyway with his ball and tossed it against the wall, playing catch alone. He grabbed the boy, hand over the boy's mouth. Billy struggled but he was too small to do anything.

Nettie Wells has just come out of the general store and is moving her wagon. As she passes the alley way, she sees Billy struggling against Carter. She looks around the street but it's quiet. She isn't sure where Casey had gone. Nettie knows the seven are off looking for Becky and Buck. She can't wait for anyone to help her. Quietly she reaches into the back of her wagon and picks up her Spencer rifle.

Climbing down off the wagon, she heads for the alley. She raises her gun and aims at Carter. Nettie calls out, "Let that boy go!" Carter looks up at her -- then grins, "What are you gonna do, old woman? Shoot me?"

"I will if I have to. I've shot men before," Nettie replies. "Better be careful -- you wouldn't want to shoot the kid," Carter said.

Nettie hesitates, her attention drawn to Billy. Before she can react, Carter has pulled his sidearm and shot at Nettie -- he his holding Billy with his left hand. Nettie shoots back but she is hit and goes down.

Billy starts to scream, "You shot Mrs. Wells!"

Carter clamps his hand over Billy's mouth, "Shut up, kid."

Picking Billy up, Conner slipped back down the alley, ran behind the general store and slipped into the back entrance of the saloon. Hearing gunshots, Gloria Potter runs out of the general store. She sees Nettie's wagon sitting by the alleyway. Turning to her children, Gloria said, "Get back in the store and stay there!"

Hurrying past Nettie's wagon, Gloria sees Nettie lying in the alley. "Oh my god," Gloria cries, running over to Nettie's side.

= = = = = = = =

It was Casey, walking down the street in front of the hotel, who spotted them. Conner saw her and yelled, "You -- get the Bounty Hunter out here or I'll kill this boy!"

Casey gasped and ran for the saloon.

She burst in, "Linda," she called out of breath, "That man, Carter, he's up on the roof of the saloon. He's got Billy Travis."

Linda was sitting at a table talking with Inez. Her heart sank. Oh god, she thought, not another child. Damn that bastard, Conner. She thought frantically. Chris, Vin and the others weren't back yet.

Who could help her? Then she remembered Becky had told her the women in this town were pretty tough and had taken on outlaws before.

Linda looked at Inez, "Inez, do you have a gun?"

Inez nodded, "I have a rifle behind the bar. What do you need me to do?"

Linda said, "Get out back of the saloon and be sure Carter doesn't try to get out that way. If he does, don't hesitate to shoot him. Casey, stay in here out of sight. I'm going out front to talk to him." Linda said a quick prayer and walked out to the street.

= = = = = = = =

Linda saw that several townsfolk had gathered. Mary was standing with Tiny. Mary looked completely out of sorts. She was in tears, staring up at Billy with Conner on the roof of the saloon. Linda glanced at Tiny and said, "Tiny, get Mary off the street. It's not safe out here." Tiny nodded and pulled on Mary's arm, but Mary did not want to budge.

Linda stepped out into the middle of the street. "Conner!" She called, "You have to release that boy!"

Conner grinned, "You want him? You come up here and get him, Bounty Hunter!"

Linda nodded and went back inside the saloon. Inez, in the back, caught sight of Linda and ran back inside.

"What?" Inez asked.

"How many ways are there to get to the roof?" Linda asked.

"There are two. There's the stairs in the back -- they lead to a doorway that opens onto the roof. But, there is also a crawl space through a room on the top floor. The room is not used except for storage," Inez replied.

Linda nodded, "I have an idea."

= = = = = = =

Linda came out through the main door way, on the roof of the saloon. She did not have her rifle and her hand guns were in her holster. She held out her hands to Conner, "All right, Conner. Let the boy go. I'm here as you asked and haven't drawn a weapon."

Conner turned to her, looked at her closely, "Step away from the door and I'll let the boy go."

Linda took a few side steps away from the door. At that moment, horses could be heard riding into town. It was the seven and Becky returning. Conner gave a quick glance over his shoulder at them, his gun still pointed at Linda.

Becky noticed people in the alleyway and saw Gloria with Nettie. "Nathan!" Becky called, "we've got injured."

Becky and Nathan turned their horses and headed for the alley way. The rest of the men continued down the main street.

Back up on the roof, Carter turned back to Linda. Suddenly, another sound, closer this time as Inez threw open the door set in the roof from the crawl space and yelled, "HEY!"

Conner spun, released Billy and took a shot at Inez, who disappeared into the crawl space before Conner could get her. Across the street on the hotel room, Ezra and Josiah have appeared. They both move to the edge of the roof, trying to get a clear shot at Carter.

"Billy, drop!" Linda yelled. Billy threw himself down onto the roof. Chris and Vin come charging through the roof top doorway, starting to draw their guns.

Conner turned toward Linda and faster than blinking, Linda drew her gun and shot Conner -- right between the eyes. Conner stood there for a moment. Then fell.

Chris ran over to check on Conner -- who was dead. Billy got up and ran over to Linda, held onto her tight. Vin came over, put his hand on Billy's shoulder and gave Linda a kiss on the cheek.

Buck hit the roof with JD. They looked around and Buck said, "Damn, we're always missing the party."

= = = = = = =

They walked back downstairs and into the street. Tiny told Linda that Mary was in the Clarion office. Linda walks over with Billy and Inez.

JD has walked back down the stairs with Chris, Buck and Vin. Josiah and Ezra came out of the hotel and walked across the street to meet them.

Vin said, "Did you see Linda draw that gun?"

Ezra said, "She was FAST -- I can't believe that!"

Buck laughed, "Boys, you better be minding your manners or you'll be in trouble." They all laughed.

Tiny runs up to the men. "Nettie Wells has been shot. Nathan and Becky took her over to the clinic." Tiny looks at JD, "Casey's in the saloon -- I don't think she knows yet." JD runs into the saloon. Vin breaks from the group to run to the clinic, the others hard on his heels.

= = = = = = =

Linda, Billy and Inez walk into the Clarion office. Mary cries out and runs to Billy. Holding him with one arm, she throws the other arm around Linda's neck and squeezes her tightly. "Thank you!" Mary cries.

Tiny comes in at that moment. Tells them about Nettie. Linda runs toward Nathan's clinic.

= = = = = = =

Nathan and Becky were working frantically over Nettie in the clinic. Her breathing was shallow and she looked poorly; her color was bad. Nathan was getting ready to remove the bullet. It is a stomach wound and she has lost a lot of blood. He was getting his equipment together as quickly as he could.

Becky said, "Nettie, do you want a shot of whiskey before Nathan starts on the bullet?"

Nettie nodded, her voice a whisper, "Yes, dear -- I could stand that."

Becky helped Nettie sit up a bit and helped her down some whiskey. As Becky helps her lay back against the pillows, Nettie winces but doesn't say anything.

"I'm sorry, Nettie," Becky said.

"Not your fault, dear," Nettie replied, quietly. "What happened to Guy Royal?"

"He's dead. Buck shot him," Becky replied.

Netted nodded, "Good. Carter, too?"

"Yes," Becky said, "I just heard that Linda took care of him." Nettie suddenly reached out and took Becky's hand, squeezed it tight. "Becky -- Becky," she whispered, urgently. Becky leaned close to Nettie and squeezed her hand back, "I'm here, Nettie. What do you need?"

"Casey-" she began, "I can't leave Casey alone."

Becky and Nathan's eyes met over Nettie. Becky swallowed and said, "Nettie, don't you worry about Casey. She won't be alone. I'll always take care of her. I promise you."

Nathan removed the bullet and stitched up the wound while Becky assisted him. Nettie did not make a sound but lay back with her eyes closed. As Nathan was bandaging up the wound, he looked at Becky and shook his head.

"Should I get Casey?" Becky whispered.

Nathan nodded, "Yeah, you'd better. I don't think there's much time."

Becky went to the door; she looked back at Nettie for a second then opened the door and went out.

Casey was sitting right outside with Linda and the six other men. They all looked up at her. Becky went right to Casey and knelt in front of her.

"Casey, go on in and see Nettie," Becky said, quietly. Casey looked at Becky with tears in her eyes. Becky felt she knew. Casey hurried inside.

"Well?" Chris asked after Casey was gone.

Becky turned and looked at all of them. She shook her head. "She's not going to make it. I'm sorry. Nathan did his best. The wound was just -- it was bad. Nettie lost too much blood." Becky looked at Josiah. "Come downstairs with me for a minute, would you?"

Josiah got up and followed Becky down the stairs. Chris watched them go to the front of the livery and saw Becky speaking to Josiah; but he could not hear their conversation. Vin and JD looked particularly upset.

Chris moved off away from the others to the side of the porch overlooking the street. Buck moved beside him. Chris was looking down at Becky. Chris shook his head and said quietly to Buck, "Becky's going to be noble again and take in a stray, I bet."

Buck looked at Chris -- Buck was angry. Buck answered through clenched teeth, "Chris -- you don't know jack about Becky. She's got the biggest heart of any person I ever met. She's been to the devil and back for you and you don't even know it."

Chris looked at Buck, "What the hell are you talkin' about?"

"Do you remember the night Becky and Sarah moved into their grandmother's house? You and I went over there. You and Sarah took off. Did it ever occur to you to wonder where Becky was?" Buck asked.

"I thought she was sleeping," Chris said.

"That's what Grandma Connelly said. Becky was in the bedroom.

Doctor was there stitching her back up after her father beat her. She was protecting Sarah from him. The doctor had given Becky something so she'd sleep -- she didn't even know I was there. She was hurt bad, Chris. Grandma Connelly said Sarah didn't want you to know -- Sarah was afraid you'd shoot Hank over it," Buck said.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Chris asked, looking toward where Becky and Josiah were standing.

"I made a promise I wouldn't," Buck said. "I loved them, too, you know."

Linda moved over toward Buck and Chris. She said, quietly, "This isn't the time to be fighting. Save it for later." She moved over toward Vin and put her arms around him.

= = = = = = =

Becky held Josiah's hand, tightly. She was saying, "She's got no one, Josiah. We've got to take her in."

Josiah nodded, "Of course, that's not even an issue. We'll fix up the new room for her. The boys can help me move her things in right away."

"I guess it's a good thing you finished building that room before the wedding. We've got to help Casey through this -- funeral arrangements and all," Becky said.

"I can take care of any of that," he said.

Becky looked up at him with tears in her eyes, "I love you."

Nathan opened up the door. He motioned to Becky. She and Josiah hurried up the stairs.

Nathan said, "She wants to see Vin and Becky."

Becky and Vin went inside the clinic and Nathan shut the door.

Becky moved over toward where Casey sat, next to her aunt. Casey was crying, tears streaming down her face. Becky moved behind Casey and put her hands on Casey's shoulders. Vin went to the other side of the bed.

Nettie looked at Vin. "Vin," she said quietly. He leaned down toward her. He had tears in his eyes but tried to keep his voice under control.

"Yes, Nettie -- I'm right here," Vin said.

"I want you to have my stake. Take good care of the land and make it your home," Nettie whispered.

"Nettie, I can't take that," Vin said.

"You denying a dying woman her deathbed request? That's bad luck you know, son," Nettie said. But she smiled at him, "I love you like you were my own boy. Please do this for me."

Vin nodded, "I will."

Nettie turned to look at Casey, "I love you, child. Don't mourn too long or too deeply."

"I love you, too, Aunt Nettie," Casey replied through tears. "I'll be watching over you always. Be a good girl," Nettie whispered. She looked up at Becky.

Before Nettie could say anything, Becky said, "Don't worry, Nettie. Josiah and I will take good care of Casey. She'll always have a home with us."

Nettie nodded, "I know. Thank you, child." She closed her eyes, "Nathan, don't feel bad. You did all you could. It's just my time. I'm so tired." She took a deep breath and blew it out. Then she was gone.

Casey began to cry in earnest. Casey stood shakily and Becky wrapped her arms around Casey and held her while she cried. Becky whispered, "It will be all right, Casey. You'll come home with me."

Nathan came out of the clinic and quietly told the assemblage that Nettie was gone. Linda looks around at the boys and said, "If you need me, I'll be in the saloon. I have some things I need to figure out." She walks down the stairs from the clinic, her shoulders slumped and heads for the saloon. Ezra follows her.

Linda enters the saloon and takes a table in the farthest corner of the room. A thought keeps running through her mind -- `It's my fault -- someone always dies when I'm around'. Inez walks over.

"Can I get you something, Linda?" Inez asks.

"Yeah, bring me a bottle of whiskey," Linda said.

Ezra goes to the bar and talks quietly to Inez. Then he gets a beer, but he stays over at the bar. He has the feeling Linda wants to be left alone.

Inez brings Linda her whiskey. Linda quickly downs a shot.

About an hour later, Buck, JD and Nathan come in. The three of them have taken Nettie to the undertakers. Ezra walks over and takes a seat at the table with the three men. Inez quietly brings them beer and a milk for JD. Chris and Vin come in. Vin is visibly upset. Chris has an arm around Vin's shoulders and is talking to him quietly. He leads Vin to the table where the boys are sitting. Chris goes to the bar and gets a few more beers. Brings one over to Vin and takes a seat himself.

Josiah, Becky and Casey come in a short time later. JD gets up and moves toward Casey, asking her if she's all right. She nods, but it's clear she's been crying. Her eyes are red rimmed. JD leads her to a seat between him and Buck. Josiah takes a seat with the boys but Becky notices Linda sitting alone and goes over to Linda's table.

"What are you doing?" Becky asks.

"Getting drunk," Linda replies. "This is my fault."

"No, it wasn't your fault," Becky said, taking a seat.

"It was -- if it wasn't for me, Carter would never have come here," Linda said. "He hurt you and Buck; he killed Nettie -- it's my fault." Linda starts to stand but she is wobbly.

"Linda, what are you trying to do?" Becky stands as she's afraid Linda will fall.

"I'm going -- tell Vin I'm sorry and good bye for me," Linda said. Linda leaves the saloon. She seems steadier on her feet than she was before. Becky watches her leave and thinks about following Linda but knows she's must stay for Casey. She does walk out through the batwing doors to see where Linda is headed. Becky watches Linda go into the livery stable.

Linda said to Tiny, "I need my horse."

Tiny nods, "Yeah -- give me a moment, Ms. Murdock. I'll get Blue ready for ya right away."

When Linda rides out of the stable, she sees Becky standing in front of the saloon. Ezra has come out and is speaking with her. Linda tips her hat to them and rides off at a fast gallop.

Linda rides straight to her house in the hills that night without stopping. When she gets to her home, she takes the saddle and saddlebags off Blue and puts him in the corral. She walks into the house and pauses for a moment, thinking she hears horses but shrugs it off, thinking it is her imagination. `I need some food,' she thinks, heading for her kitchen. She makes a hot toddy, biscuits and a big pot of beans. She takes the food to the main sitting room and props her feet up, looking out the window at the corral. She notices Blue is bucking and running around. Just then she does see a lone rider on horseback coming toward her home. It is Vin.

Vin dismounts and ties Peso to the hitching post in front of Linda's house. He walks up to the front door and lets himself in. Linda looks up at him with tears in her eyes.

He walks over to where she sits and puts his arms around her. "It wasn't your fault," he said, quietly. He kisses her gently. Linda falls asleep crying on his shoulder.

After Vin left, the group ate a quiet dinner at the saloon. When they were finished, Becky leaned close to Casey and said, "You look tired. Want to head for home?"

Casey looked up at Becky and nodded. They stood as did JD and Josiah and the four of them left the saloon after saying goodnight to Chris, Buck, Nathan and Ezra.

Nathan watched them leave. Once they were out of hearing range he shook his head and smacked his hand on the table. "If only I'd gotten to her sooner before she lost so much blood -- damn," Nathan said.

Buck looked sympathetic, "Nathan, you did your best."

Chris stood and put a hand on Nathan's shoulder, "Nathan, sometimes its just out of our hands." Chris left the saloon. When he got outside, he hurried to catch up with Josiah, JD, Becky and Casey. He fell into step with them and quietly walked to Josiah and Becky's house. The men stayed out on the front porch. Casey said good night to them and JD said he'd come by to see Casey in the morning. Becky took Casey inside to the spare bedroom. She got Casey some clothing of her own to borrow; a nightgown, robe and a skirt and blouse for the next day. She told Casey they could go over to her house in the morning if she wanted and get a few things. Casey gave Becky a hug. "Thank you, Becky," Casey said, on the verge of tears again.

"Casey, I meant what I said before. Josiah and I want you to stay here with us. We'd like to be your family, if you'll have us," Becky said, quietly. She held Casey and stroked her hair.

Casey nodded, "Yes, I want to stay with you." She dissolved in tears. Becky just held her. Once Casey quieted down, she wiped her face and put on the nightgown. Becky said good night and Casey climbed into bed. She was so exhausted, she was practically asleep when Becky closed the bedroom door.

Becky headed back out to the front porch. JD was still there with Josiah and Chris. Becky sat in one of the rocking chairs. "I think she's asleep now," Becky said quietly. She looked at JD. "JD, if you don't mind my saying so, you look pretty tired yourself. Why don't you go home and get some sleep. Come back over in the morning and have breakfast with us."

JD nodded, "Yeah, I'll do that. Good night." JD took his leave.

Chris looked at Becky, "You don't think you're taking on too much, do you?"

Becky looked off at the night sky and said, "You mean Casey? No, of course not. She doesn't even turn 18 for a few months. She's too young to be on her own and she's my friend. Nettie was good to me -- I'm proud to be able to do this for her."

"Why didn't you ever tell me about the night you and Sarah moved out of Hank's?" Chris asked.

Becky stopped rocking and looked at him, "What are you talking about?" But by the look on Chris' face, Becky could tell he knew. "Who told you about that?" She glanced at Josiah, but he shook his head.

"Buck. Your grandmother told him. He was there when the doctor was stitching you up," Chris said.

Becky sighed, leaned back in the chair and started rocking again. "It doesn't matter, Chris. That's over. I did what I had to do. Let it go."

"Do you always do what you feel you have to do?" Chris asked.

"Yes. Some people are like that," she replied.

Later, after Chris left, Josiah and Becky lock up and head for their bedroom. Josiah gives Becky a kiss and helps her undress. The room is lit dimly from the full moon. He climbs into bed next to her after undressing and pulls her into his arms. Becky lays her head against his chest. She is feeling completely exhausted. They are quiet for a few moments.

"Are you all right?" Becky asked.

"Yeah. I was so worried about you. I feel terrible about Nettie. I'm glad Linda killed Carter." He shakes his head, "I won't be able to sleep for a while. Thinkin' just too much is all."

Becky smiles and hugs him. Then she said quietly, "Not the greatest start to our honeymoon, was it?"

"We're together and that's all that matters to me," he replied, kissing the top of her head.

"You are right about that," she smiles and snuggles against him. She closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep.

Josiah lays quietly for a long while and just holds Becky in his arms.

When Becky wakes up the next morning, it's early. In the first moments of wakefulness, she thinks something is wrong. Suddenly the memory of the previous two days comes flooding back to her and her first thought is of Casey. Josiah is still asleep. She gets up quietly and goes to the bedroom door. Casey's door is still shut and the house is silent. Becky goes back to the wash room off her bedroom. She takes care of her toiletry and puts on a long skirt and blouse. Shutting the bedroom door behind her, she makes her way to Casey's room and peeks in. Casey is still asleep so Becky shuts her door and lets her sleep on.

Becky goes to the kitchen. It is still just before dawn, so she lights a lantern. She lights the stove and puts on a pot of coffee. She gets breakfast started, remembering that JD is coming over. In the middle of getting the biscuits ready, there's a tapping at the back door. Looking up she sees Buck. Becky waves him in.

"Morning, Becky," he said.

"Morning, Buck. You're up early," she replies.

"Volunteered for rounds. I just didn't want to be sittin' around," he said.

"Well, come on in and shut the door. I'll have coffee ready in a few minutes. Want some breakfast?" she asks.

"Yeah, that'd be good." Buck takes a seat at the table. "Everyone still sleepin'?"

She nods, "Yes. I'm glad Casey is getting some rest." Becky pulls out a baking sheet and puts the biscuits on it; then puts it in the oven. She pours coffee for herself and Buck and sits down next to him at the table. "JD is coming over for breakfast."

Buck nods, "I figured he'd be keeping tabs on Casey." He looks over at Becky and asks, "What happened to Linda yesterday?"

Becky sighs, "She thinks all of this is her fault. That if she hadn't have come here, Carter never would have. She went up to her place in the mountains." She looks at Buck, "I think Vin followed her up there. Did Vin tell you Nettie left him her stake?"

"No -- he didn't say anything. She always was kind of sweet on him," Buck said, with a grin. "Nettie was a good sort. Reminded my of your grandmother."

Becky smiled, "Yeah -- they were definitely cut from the same piece of cloth."

"You gonna need any help today?" Buck asked.

"You mean with Casey?" Buck nodded and Becky said, "Well, I was planning to take her over to her house so she could start packing some things up -- you know, clothes and the like that she'd need right away. You want to come along? I think Casey would like to have the company."

"Yeah, I'll go. Keep JD out of trouble," Buck said. "What about the funeral?"

"Josiah said he'd take care of everything. We'll probably have to pick an outfit out for Nettie and see if there's anything special that Casey wants done," Becky said. She shakes her head, "It's gonna be a rough day, Buck." She pauses for a moment, looks at Buck and smiles, "I appreciate your being here, Buck. You've always come through for me."

Buck grins and chucks her under the chin. Then he said, "That's what family's for, sis."

That day there was a big front page story in the Clarion: "BOUNTY HUNTER SAVES BILLY TRAVIS FROM THE LAST MEMBER OF THE CARTER GANG"

In smaller type, was printed,. "Conner Carter shot dead. Beloved Local Resident, Nettie Wells, murdered by Carter while trying to save Billy Travis."

= = = = = = =

Two days later, the funeral for Nettie Wells was held. Everyone from town and the surrounding homesteaders came for the funeral. Vin and Linda have returned. Nettie had told Casey she wanted no church ceremony just the 23rd Psalm read over her grave and to let any of the neighbors speak if they wanted to. Josiah said a prayer, read the Psalm and then asked if anyone wanted to say a few words. Vin stepped forward, which surprised most of the assembly, as he was usually so quiet at large gatherings.

Vin held his hat in his hands and rotated the brim round and round -- probably from nervousness.

"I'm not much for speakin'," Vin begins. "I just wanted to say that in my own way, I loved Nettie Wells. She was like a second mother to me. She was tough when she had to be, kind just because she was, and good because God made her that way. We lost Nettie two days ago but her spirit will always be with us. I'm a better person for havin' known her."

JD and Becky stood on either side of Casey. Buck and Chris right behind them. Casey held Becky's hand throughout the service. Casey cried quietly and wiped tears away. She was very proud of Vin and thought how happy his words would have made Nettie.

Judge Travis gave Linda a medal for saving Billy and protecting the town on her own that day. He said the townsfolk are forever in her debt. There are new people coming to town almost every day from the East; settlers looking to move to a safe area. With all the new people in town, business is booming for Mary Travis at the Clarion. Gloria Potter is so busy at the general store, she's offered Casey a full-time job. Casey told Gloria she'd prefer to work only part-time hours for a while and work up to full-time. Casey is spending most of her time with Becky and JD. The day after the funeral, Josiah, Becky, JD and Buck took a wagon over to Nettie's house and helped Casey pack up her things and any of the furniture she wanted to take. Vin moved into Nettie's house. He thought he would be uncomfortable in the house but at times he feels her spirit is there, guiding him. It makes him feel good. He is trying to learn how to run the spread. Becky and Casey have offered to help him any farming he might choose to do. He's never done that before and said he'd like to learn more about the land and planting. For Casey, the memories of this spread are happy ones and she enjoys coming back to her aunt's house.
