"…If they ask you how I’m holding up, Say I’m holding out for the words"
- Sarah Harmer

Vin’s stomach churned as he waited for Ezra to show up at the saloon. Ezra and the man he was bringing with him. Dammit he told himself. Knew I should have moved faster. Said somethin’. Hell, I was movin’ so slow I was practically goin’ backwards. All these weeks takin my time, letting him know I want more than a quick roll in the hay. Then this old friend shows up and it’s ‘Don’t be ridiculous, you can stay at my apartment Dale.’ And ‘It will be so good to see you again Dale.’ Shove it up yer ass and blow it Dale. The worst part of it was, he’d seen Ezra’s disappointed face after he’d stormed out. Just made him madder at the bastard who’d stolen his chance.

The can he had in his hand made a distressed noise and he eased off his iron grip. A wave of defeat swept over him. Ain’t like he’s made any real promise to me. Nothin’ more than the rose. And of course the kiss. The only two hints he had that Ezra felt more than friendship.

He ran his tongue over his lips remembering that kiss.

They’d stood there in the doorway of Vin’s apartment, fingers entwined about the rose Ezra had just given him. They’d leaned forward and lips had pressed together briefly. It had been a chaste kiss, at least at first. When Ezra had drawn back, perhaps a little disappointed, Vin had stopped him and their lips met again.

Vin had started at the left-hand corner of Ezra’s mouth, licking gently upwards until the lips and teeth behind them gently parted. He continued upwards to the bow of the mouth before accepting the invitation and darting his tongue in to gently lick the back of Ezra’s front teeth. Sliding back be took the upper lip with him a brief way, smiling at the feel of it as it pulled out of his mouth.

They’d been interrupted then, by the cab they’d ordered, but the glow from the moment had lasted the entire evening. For Vin anyways. Maybe Ezra had felt differently. Maybe the time Vin had given him had only served to convince him that Vin wasn’t what he wanted. After all, even though he’d made an effort to meet Ezra on his terms, no one knew better than him that he didn’t fit in.

Every time he dressed up he felt ridiculous, like a mannequin dressed up for display. He always wondered what other people were saying behind their backs. Lord knows he didn’t care what other people thought, but Ezra was a different story. Ezra… Ezra was here, and so was the other guy.

He was shorter than Ezra by an inch or so, and ugly. Buckteeth, ragged greasy blond hair… Aw fuck. Who was he trying to kid? He wasn’t ugly, he was pretty good looking, almost as handsome as Ez.

Come to think of it, he did look a lot like Ezra. Same colour hair, same vibrant green eyes… Aw shit.

The embarrassment he felt only increased as Ezra introduced to everyone him as his cousin.

Ezra fretted at his concern, the first serious one since starting this relationship with Vin. Before, it had felt so right, the two of them, spending time together, but what if his haste in choosing this had led him to make a mistake? Not that the relationship itself was moving too fast, god knows if it was moving any slower it’d be going backwards.

He’d had jealous lovers before, and it had been a miserable experience. He couldn’t handle the questions, the second guessing… Of course, Vin’s jealousy meant that he was interested, but there was no way he was going to be someone’s possession. Not again.

But he equally didn’t want to overreact and lose something infinitely precious. He suddenly realised JD was talking to him

"…Anyway I’m sorry but that just happens to be how I feel about it. What do you think? " Ezra stared at him blankly. He needed to think.

"I’m sorry gentlemen, but I must excuse myself. I have recollected an alternate locale that requires my presence." Surprised by this, the other men around the table said goodnight, except for Vin who quickly followed.

Buck and Dale

After Ezra’s abrupt departure Dale had challenged Buck to a game of pool and they’d moved off, the gregarious ladies man trying to get to know the newcomer who’d been relatively quiet all evening. After a few rounds Buck started to notice the games were going back and forth a little too evenly. Dale didn’t even seem to be focusing on the game, not that game anyway. Buck got a little shiver down his spine.

Buck knew a thing or two about seduction, and it was hardly the first time he’d been on the receiving end of a male one.

First time he’d actually been tempted though.

"Are you thinking about it?" Buck was momentarily thrown by the question. "Ezra and Vin. What they’re doing right now." Buck’s eyes widened as he had a momentary mental flash of Ezra. Naked on his hands and knees, head thrown back as Vin intently rode him from behind. Suddenly his pants were too small.

"Shit."

"Well, if you weren’t before, you are now." With a grin Dale slowly stretched out onto the pool table, ass towards Buck as he made his shot. Suddenly he straightened up, and it was like a switch had been thrown, the lust he’d been projecting turned to ‘off’. "Sorry, shouldn’t have said that. Lord knows my relationships have enough people involved without adding in more." He gestured for Buck to shoot even though it was his turn, a mute apology.

Buck shook his head with a smile. Geez this guy was a handful. He had a sudden urge to find out just how much of a handful he could be.

Ezra and Vin

"Ezra! Hey Ez wait up." Ezra scanned the streets desperately for a taxi but none appeared. Oh well, it wasn’t like he could avoid Vin forever, he’d just hoped to have a little time to think things through first.

Vin caught up.

"Ez I’m sorry. I swear to god I never would have done anythin’ to your friend." Ezra spun around to face him, drawing a breath to tell him exactly what he thought of that last statement. He abruptly reconsidered.

"This is hardly the best place for such a conversation Vin."

"Yeah. Hey, where’s your Jag?"

"I was.. planning to leave with you tonight."

"You still could." Ezra gave him a cautious look. "Just t’ talk. I know better than t’ let things like this lie. ‘Sides, if you’re at my place you can take off if ya feel the need." Ezra’s face softened. Vin was the first person who’d ever given him that consideration - a way out if things got difficult. He nodded and smiled. He’d hate to have to explain to Dale again why he still wasn’t ‘Nailing that cute guy to the mattress.’

Buck and Dale

"It was in 3rd grade. I tried to kiss Becky-Lou Anston, and she ran away and said I was gross. I swore off women forever."

"Really?"

"No." Buck laughed and took another drink of his beer. He wasn’t drunk, only pleasantly buzzed. And considering the company he didn’t mind at all.

"Gotta admit I’m curious. I mean, I know the theory but…"

"Nothing beats practical experience? I could.. ‘ahem’ give you a hand with that."

Buck flushed. It wasn’t often someone could get him going like this. Dale gave him a feral grin from across the table. Buck recognized it as the one he occasionally gave a suitably daring woman and licked suddenly dry lips, recognizing the silent challenge. Well, we’ll just see about that.

Ezra and Vin

Ezra watched as Vin closed the door behind him but didn’t lock it.

"Afraid I’ll run out of here screaming?"

"Didn’t figure on it. So you want to go first or should I?" Ezra carefully paced his jacket over the back of a chair. He wanted to talk. He wanted to tell Vin all the thoughts that had run through his head that night but he just couldn’t. He couldn’t broach that mass of words. he opened his mouth, fully intending to come up with an excuse, or tell Vin to talk when he heard himself say

"I can’t do that again." Well, that was easier than he’d thought. "I won’t do that again, won’t have somebody treating me like some sort of…wayward pet. Checking my mail, reading my messages, my bills, attacking anyone who comes too close and never leaving me alone." Both men were surprised by the note of desperation that crept into his voice. He regained control. "My apologies Vin. It appears I still have some issues from earlier relationships." Vin moved over to Ezra and, after silently asking permission, wrapped his arm around him. "One little hiccup and I go all to pieces."

"No Ez. Jeezus, I’d never do that - try to own you like that. Try to change you. Can’t say how sorry I am fer how I acted. Swear I’d never have hurt the guy."

"I don’t give a fuck about that. Lord knows Dale is perfectly capable of beating Josiah to a pulp if he feels like it. What worries me is that you thought so little of me as to believe I would betray you and then flaunt it in your face." Vin took a deep breath. He was obviously considering his words carefully.

"You never promised me anything Ez. Not with words and not with actions. Figured you never thought there was anything to betray. Figured…maybe you got a better offer." Ezra turned to look in the eyes of the man he hoped would become his lover.

"Vin, I care for you deeply. I can’t say the words ‘I love you’ yet, but I know I will soon. You mean more to me now than any lover ever has. There is no ‘better offer’. Do you understand? There Is No Better Offer!" Vin drew him into an embrace and blinked away tears.

"I love you Ezra Standish."

"I know." Their lips met and the vow was sealed with a kiss.

Buck and Dale

The door to Ezra’s condo flew open as two fumbling men fell through, trying to walk and strip each other at the same time.

"Ya sure Ez won’t mind?" Dale snorted.

"If he wanted to christen this place himself he should have been faster about it. Besides, he told me to make myself at home." Dale drove his cloth covered hip into Buck’s groin, drawing out a groan and his last concern at the same time. Buck dove forward and caught the other man in a deep, breath stealing kiss before spinning him around and reaching into the front of his pants. Dale leaned his head back against Buck’s shoulder with a moan of pleasure as the larger man undid the front of his jeans and started to stroke his erection, the other wrapping around his stomach.

Buck ground his hips against the denim covered ass in front of him. In this position it was almost like he was touching himself, and yet so very different. His left hand kneaded the hard, flexing stomach, luxuriating in the feel of it almost as much as the sounds the man in front of him was making. Who would have ever thought Buck Wilmington could want another man? If someone had told him he would be here, and so damn turned on by it all he would have laughed at them. That or socked them one. The feel of it though, fierce and strong instead of gentle and tender just felt so right.

He squeezed ever so gently, and with a buck and a cry Dale came all over his hands. And the carpet. Damn, but Ez’ll be pissed about that. Then his new lover pounced on him and he stopped thinking for a while.

Ezra and Vin

The gentle kiss had given way to a heavy petting session on the couch. When Ezra rose up and offered Vin a hand he was only too happy to follow the man he loved into the bedroom. Vin had a muted moment of thanks for the fact that he’d cleaned the place up before going out. As his soon-to-be lover stripped off the last of his clothes, Vin copied him and got out the supplies.

Finally lying together, skin to skin was better even than he’d dreamed. With slow touches and caresses he mapped the skin beside him with a kiss here, a gentle stroke there. When it was time he put a condom on Ezra and handed him the lube, kissing away the surprise on his face.

He arched in pleasure as the first finger penetrated him, cool and slender. When the second one joined in and touched his gland he came with a cry, holding his lover tightly in his arms. When Ezra started to withdraw he reached behind himself and held the hand in place, shuddering a little with the sensation of the intimate touch.

"No! Please Ez, I like…I like bein’ joined like this after. Keep goin’?"

"For you Vin, anything." The throaty sound of his lover’s voice and small twitch of the fingers had him growing again as a third was added. Gently Ezra rolled him over, and wrapping his arms around him gently breached him for the first time. Vin moaned, feeling the fire and deep intimate touch he’d been craving. He was hard as a rock again and shaking from want.

In a broken voice he pleaded for Ezra to move, which his beloved did after a few seconds. Then, thrust after thrust, so slow and steady he thought he would lose his mind. Not so steady was Ezra’s voice as he muttered in a foreign language. Vin thought it sounded French, though he wasn’t exactly focusing on it. The measured strokes grew irregular and Ezra reached around for his erection stroking Vin to completion, coming soon after. Vin could feel his whole body shaking with aftershocks. God, how’d he hold on so long? Wish I could really feel him inside. That’ll come later anyway. He smiled as Ezra snuggled into his back, still inside. Perfect.

Of course, there were parts of their relationship that were far from perfect, like the time he discovered why Ezra preferred to have sex from the back. Vin could tell that keeping eye contact during climax was one of the hardest things Ezra had ever had to do, but it was worth it. Finally knowing that Vin meant what he had said was all Ezra needed to make his own declaration of love, adding a whole new dimension to their feelings.

There it was, shown for all to see, the sweet release of no longer having to hold out.

The End, for now
